@101 - If that was truly your intent - to comment on our society's failure to provide adequate education or services around family planning or adoption - I wish you'd taken a deep breath and made a thoughtful, helpful statement to that point. Instead, you perpetuated an old trope about women and abortion and then, in a seeming nonsequitor (since, as you state here, you're not even sure the woman in your story was seeking a late-term abortion, and given the circumstances, she likely wasn't), threw in a casual insult to the many people who had shared their stories of late-term abortion on Andrew Sullivan's site. Not helpful.

@101 -- of course abortion is birth control. What else would it be. You're preventing a birth.

Now that that's out of the way, again... how is 1 abortion acceptable but 6 is not? Is a fetus 1/6th of a human life? I don't understand. It's not like our murder laws allow someone to kill and devour 5 people without consequence but then once you're killed and devoured a sixth person you've gone too far!!!!

Look, it's either murder or it isn't. And if you feel that it's murder, that's fine, but you need to own it and stop with this half-assed "look at my sparkling morals" hand-wringing.If it's murder it should be illegal. Full stop, no exceptions. This means you want mandatory jail time for women who get abortions: If I contract out someone to kill my husband, I go to jail as well as the killer. None of this "we'll pray for the silly woman who got suckered into murdering her child" nonsense. One in four American women will be serving a life in prison term or face state execution if Abortion Really Is Murder. And if you are fine with that then by all means picket and protest and wave bloody fetus signs. But if you aren't fine with that then get the hell off your high horse and accept that this is a matter of personal privacy. A woman's "number" (whether it be weight, sex partners, or # of abortions) is her own business and none of yours.

Guess what kids? It's my uterus. I'll scrape the fucker clean as many times as I want to. Know why?

BECAUSE IT'S MY FUCKING BODY! I'M STUCK IN IT!

Futhermore, a propensity to terminate growths in my uterus which I do not want to become children has nothing to do with my ability to be a good mother, should I some day elect to bear a child to term. In fact, my repeated efforts to *not* become a mother on the occaisions that birth control has failed me, or I've recognized my own bad judgment, etc. might speak to my practical level-headedness, not the other way around.

Abortion is by no means the "worst" choice. In fact, it is often the wisest.
