It never fails to surprise me how angry some commenters get with gay content on alt-paper blogs. What the hell do you expect? Why aren't you on RedState or Fark or something? It's not going to be all local gossip, bar discussion and music entries, so get over yourself.
Jesus Christ, Dan, that's not gay. Look at the thighs on her -- phoo-wer, I mean really. What's the world coming to when the world's leading gay can't even tell what's gay or not?
I think your count is off. I see 13 out 38, as long as you're talking about LGBT, not just boys with boys. If readership is only 25% gay, maybe it's time for some affirmative action to increase the diversity of your workforce.
Speaking as a straight person, I really couldn't give a fuck what the ratio of gay:straight posts are. Post as many as you like/want/need to Dan, no rain off this duck's back.
But then, I'm in the theatre, which means I'm used to a high gay:straight ratio already, so what do I know?
I take issue with your methodology, Dan. I think you need three categories: gay, straight, and neutral. Posts like "When Is a Taco Truck Not a Taco Truck?" are neither gay nor straight and counting them as "not gay" rather than neutral skews your results.
It's your blog and I think you should do what you want with it, but let's at least be accurate with the numbers.

Obviously banning links in unregistered comments isn't having the hoped for effect so why don't we reverse that. All it does it reduce the diversity of opinions posted.
It never fails to surprise me how angry some gay commenters get with hetero content in American laws. What the hell do you expect? Why aren't you in Denmark or Canada or somewhere? It's not going to be about buttfucking and gay marriage, so get over yourself.
I don't have any problem with the amount of LGBT content on Slog. It's largely why I visit the site so frequently and would not change a thing.
My only problem is that you consistently assume an all-male audience in how you label things (something involving hot guys is gay and something involving hot girls is straight.)
The posts about gay issues are not "for" or "about" gays only -- they are for/about all of us.
Human dignity pursuit of happyness equality privacy to marry and create the family you want
job fairness opportunity and equal chance to serve is not a "gay" thing but is for everyone.
Ditto with how politicians should keep promises, e.g. to Armenian Americans, and gays, and people told oh no, don't push for single payer we can negotiate with the ins. cos. (ha ha !!) we ALL should have promises kept -- that's not a gay thing.
Why do whites suppoert civil rights "for" blacks? Why do men support gender equality ? Why do straights support gay rights?
It's because (a) one does not see them as other, one sees them as "us" and "we" (b) we support rights and equality for ALL; (b) we are moral and just and believe in America's promise (warning: non snarky statement was just made); and (c) fuck man, no man is island, duh, we have friends lovers wives siblings parents kids families guitar teachers and many we love or admire or affinate with who are black, gay, women, etc. and we don't fucking like it when fucking assholes oppress them or fucking stab them in the back with vile and disgusting DOMA briefs, etc.
So Dan is 100% wrong -- there are no "gay" articles and "nongay" articles.
You also need to not count anything of Paul's reading or theatre or poetry writings, as they are just "content fill", and rarely are desired by the masses here. Also you need to remove Mudede's rants, musings and hallucinations. Once you've done Emily's suggestion and mine, you really begin to see there isn't much else day in and day out.
You've taken one special interest cause here and elevated it to a higher level above all the others. Consider that it isn't a question of total gay percentage content, but rather one of total breadth of variety that is at issue here...
Obama's like that guy you dated. When you met, he was great, but after you slept with him, he stopped calling. Then he starts hitting on your friend. You thought he might be "The One", but he just wanted a piece of your ass like all the others. So what do you do?
a) Keep calling him. Maybe he didn't get all 16 of your messages.
b) Go out, get drunk and sleep with someone else. Hope that this time, maybe, he'll be the one.
c) Tell him that you want your Anchorman cd and your panties back tuh-day or else you'll key his stupid little car.
And no, slog is not too gay. How crazy is that question? It's your blog--write what you want. And along with the lighter stuff--which I have no problem with whatsoever (go, goatherd!)--you post about civil rights issues that should concern all of us, whether gay or straight. Keep at it!!
BUT there is a movement about LGBT civil rights fueled, funded and managed by LGBT people. Thanks GOD. Minorities always need to take leadership of their own movement.
Remember, at one time, the NAACP kicked all the white people out of leadership as they has assumed a too large role in forming that effort.
Smart move.
And, hate to tell you. Lots of gay people have very little comfort around straight people for long. Possible exception, a few very close friends. We all form circles of safety and comfort so it is about the same dynamic as other folks.
I live, work and recreate in a 99 per cent gay envirron. - and - just love it.
I don't get why people are complaining about content anyway. It's a blog and it's free. Skip over posts you don't like, and go read another blog if you start skipping all the posts. It's not as if Slog is the only blog in Seattle. It's especially puzzling that people would complain when Slog covers news as important to so many people as gay rights and near-naked Broadway performers.
Geez. That's sad. You can't insulate yourself forever. Straight people are over 90% of the general population so we're kinda hard to avoid. We're not all that bad. And while we might not be marginalized for our sexuality, we're often marginalized in other areas of our lives for any number of reasons - ethnicity, class, religious/political beliefs -- heck even personality type. We often know what it feels like to be treated as an outsider or even a "freak".
Thankfully I don't limit the people in my life to just those who are exactly like me. Because of it I think my life is a lot richer.
So one more time representing being GAY turns out to be something campy. There are many gay girls and guys out there that just don't relate to this version of being gay that always gets used.
@38: Get used to it. Most of our lives, gay or straight, are so fucking boring that no one wants to watch us on TV, the internets, or marching in a parade.
On the other hand, maybe there should be a another stereotype-busting parade (August? September?) where everyone shows there most boring and conventional side. Parents, doctors, people in their 50's, lawyers, software testers, log cabin Republicans, lesbian softball players without lipstick, gay men's chorus, Jamie Peterson, etc.
But then, I'm in the theatre, which means I'm used to a high gay:straight ratio already, so what do I know?

Doesn't she know she can't afford to give the DNC anymore money?
There were like 8 hot bisexual women (goats?) there. That's gay enough for me.
Plus, historically and contextually any song from the Sound of Music is pretty gay.
P.S. time to ban "Zalupenko". That's a spambot. And annoying.

So Slog is basically a GLBT blog now.
This is a golden opportunity for someone to start up a blog that the rest of us can use.
"Captain, SLOG's dilithium warp drive can't handle that much gay for long!"
My only problem is that you consistently assume an all-male audience in how you label things (something involving hot guys is gay and something involving hot girls is straight.)
@4- Kim, I'm totally with you. Yummy!

Three cheers for The Hill in Seattle.
Also, that video was fantastic. Quite gay enough for this lady.
"Oh man check out this headline. Looks like something really crazy/bad/huge deal happened today- oh nevermind its just another Dan Savage post.

From a straight girl in Oregon.
Kinda homophobic - " my life is richer" - a 100 per cent gay environ. would be plenty rich, if that was possible.
Shit man, I did not say I do not have a rich life, nor that I insulate myself in the least.
I have some token straight relatives, co workers and when I shop, I go to places straight people go.
Geez, so gay men like gay men a lot ... so don' be all offended.
The shepherd himself is certainly a beefcake, though.
What "many gay girls and guys out there that just don't relate to this version of being gay" are like is inherently B-O-R-I-N-G.
Please check out the SLOG thread on Gay Pride as to why plain old gay guys and gals ought to just lump it when the campy ones do their stuff.....
no who are you really?
And here's a video to gay up SLOG just a little more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRv6_MkTM…
One damn fine goat though, and flex-i-ble.........
This rendition of the lonely goatherd, however, is definitely some high quality shit. Bonus pionts for surrounding super gay guy with girl hotties.
