as always, CD News is all over it: http://www.centraldistrictnews.com/2009/…

Undoubtedly someone had a 2nd Amendment-approved Uzi/30-30/Derringer/Winchester/Gatling/Thompson/Remington/Daisy air rifle; and just had to prove that might makes right and bullets make mortal holes.

Better phraseology: "The police surrounded the house to which the suspect fled." The suspect presumably did not flee to a house already surrounded by police. And as is said in so many similar social situations: "A good time was had by all." Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition....

ZOMG WAT RACE IS HE??!?!?!?!!?!?!?!? MENTION THE RACE!!!!!!!!!!11one

The negotiator guy on the megaphone is speaking up ever minute or two, telling the guy inside that the cops aren't going anywhere, and that the guy's mom is worried about him.

Today's lesson: don't live south of Yesler

I was just coming out of Harborview after visiting a friend. There must have been over 30 kids trying to get in. You have to go through a metal detector before going in at night. These kids were freaked out and from what I've heard a very big lesson on how short life can be and in a minute , lives change forever. Guns in the hands of Punks, looking to look cool have devastated a boys family and most likely this kid didn't have a clue and never planned on killing. But he did and prison will change him and his family as well.
7
@2 This is so much deeper then guns. Deeper then you will ever understand....

Taking away guns woulnd't have prevented this killing tonight but there is a hell of alot of other things that could have.
8
I think it was Utah Phillips (maybe quoting someone else) that said something along the lines of "make guns illegal and only the criminals will have guns"
9
@7
That ak47 sure made it a hell of a lot easier though.

There is no reason in hell why anyone should be allowed to own an assault rifle in this country. They are made for one reason only - to kill someone. NRA scores another kill so they can add a another notch in that big fat red neck belt.

Before the inevitable comments (a la #5) --

This neighborhood is actually a pretty well-off one. Not rich like a few blocks to the east, but this isn't the CD. Moreover, it isn't the kind of neighborhood where, if you stay out of the vice life, it's worth worrying (beyond common sense) about being shot. Neither is the CD. We don't really have those in Seattle, and we don't remember that nearly enough.
11
@10: Thank you.

This is a terrible series of events. But every time something bad happens in or near the CD or Rainier Valley, the assholes want to convince us this has been happening every day there for the past twenty years.

This could have happened in Redmond.
13
As someone who lives on North Beacon, and works everyday on the streets of Seattle between Denny and Orcas, I have to laugh at people who are afraid of the south end. Seattle is a disneyland of a city - even our "bad" neighborhoods aren't all that bad.

And yes, the area where this happened is pretty nice. Lake views and all that.
14
@11: it didn't happen in redmond. it happened in the south end. again.

i blame light rail.
15
Leschi is not the fucking "South End".
16
Whoops! Sounds like Fnarf needs coffee. (No lattes, though.)
17
You know, I don't think the marketing would be quite as effective if they were called "self-defense rifles" versus the Rambo-esque "assault rifle".
18
Matt, I need more coffee than the universe can provide.

Dan--
Does The Stranger provide Health Insurance for employees, interns and their families?

This happened four blocks from my Dad's house. It's a nice neighborhood with expensive lake view homes, though going west down the hill a couple blocks away is the edge of what counts as "bad neighborhood" in Seattle. There's a lot of property crime that locals perceive to be generated by the poor neighborhood just down the hill, but I'd guess it's less dangerous than living in the U District or most other places in Seattle. Just because a place is south of the ship canal and has some black people doesn't mean it's a bad neighborhood.

My son was in the car with the victim - his friend. He had just turned 18. The boy was a great kid, who had been to our home many times. This was in no way gang related - I know this for a fact. It was an argument apparently over a girl. Their are so many things that can and should be said, about gun control, about how people have such little value for life- but we've all heard that before. My son saw his friend die and will never, ever be the same. Please don't make any negative posts about this story - the boy was a solid kid who'd give you the shirt off his back - he did not deserved this.
22
I'm so sorry for your son and his friend, jmarc. Thanks for posting a comment for us here.
23
@21: My heart goes out to you and your family. At the same time, if you're looking for solace, DO NOT LOOK TO THE SLOG. It would be wise to avoid it, as well as all "comments sections" on the various online news sources.
24
fnarf, if it's south of madison and east of i-5, its the "south end". mt. baker is the south end.

"south end" also means "place i never go because i don't live there".
25
do you think this might spur people, like Dan Savage and others, to stop asking dumb questions about DBs in Ballard and bag fees and starting asking candidates about public safety?

when people are pulling out AKs in Leschi (or anywhere) you know this city has a major, major problem.

26
@23 Not looking for solace. I've just seen too many young men demonized in the news with accusations of 'gang affiliated' or 'drug related'. People have a tendency to think that they somehow deserve it and their deaths discounted. Just wanted to make a point that this kid was a stand up guy and should be remembered as such. Last post.
27
@21. Jmarc I agree with you in part. Great kid, charismatic, friendly, warm, fun. A magnet for a sizable group of 18 and 19-year olds in the area. Been at my house many a time as well. But let's face it--a fair amount of trouble was brewing beneath the shiny surface, 'nuff said. There's nothing but tragedy here, as you say, and there is a very large circle of kids in the area--mine and the 3 stunned pals of the victim crashed in my basement right now included--who are going to need to take a long time dealing with this and, let us hope, reflecting constructively about what it all means, and somehow building from that. And, I wouldn't wish what your son and M________ experienced last night on my worst enemy. Best of luck with that.

" Just because a place is south of the ship canal and has some black people doesn't mean it's a bad neighborhood."

No doubt! Up here in the Great White North the wigga's are outta control! Just look at one of them funny while in line at Dicks on 45th and you'll no doubt get your car egged. It's just awful.
29
This same sort of scenario occurs in "Romeo and Juliet". Hotheads always seem to prevail whether the wrong is imagined or not. But it's easier to achieve 'justice' with an assault rifle than it is with a BB gun, a sling shot or a broadsword. Condolences to all.
30
Technically the "South End" doesn't begin until you cross Jackson. Until then it is the CD. And will somebody answer that flappy heath insurance vagina so he'll shut the fuck up?
31
@Rhett Oracle
Yeah you are so right, take away the 2nd amendment and you eliminate violence so lets see here.....take away guns no more shootings....take away knifes no more stabbings.....take away spoons no more gouging...take away hands no more scratching......yeah....that will solve all this violence you moron! Taking away the 2nd amendment would only give guns to the criminals. Let's be like our European role models because we know banning guns have worked over there.......
