May I please beg of Dominic that he rethink articles like the recent one about Susan Hutchison? That was just really, really disappointing. And yo, I hate the bitch, so it's not about that.
Dominic, this is a great honor and I congratulate you. But! Consider. What about your future? I know whatever they want to pay you down at the Stranger seems like a lot of money for someone your age, but where does it lead? Ten years from now you'll wish you had gotten back in school and graduated, THEN gone to work at the Stranger or ANYWHERE because that diploma is your golden ticket!
Top 5 Reasons to Stay in School
1. High school dropouts are four times as likely to be unemployed as those who have completed four or more years of college;
2. Graduating from high school will determine how well you live for the next 50 years of your life. High school graduates earn $143 more per week than high school dropouts. College graduates earn $336 more per week than high school graduates ($479 more per week than high school dropouts);
3. Dropouts are more likely to apply for and receive public assistance than graduates of high school;
4. Dropouts comprise a disproportionate percentage of the nation's prison and death row inmates. 82% of prisoners in America are high school dropouts;
5. School districts all over the country provide alternative programs for students who are not successful in the usual school setting. The best programs in the country are featured in our Model Programs Database. The database can be searched for programs in your city and/or state.
On a related note, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that "it's a sad state of affairs that many in this country politically would rather start an 'Animal House' food fight rather than inspire kids to stay in school.
@10 - Those are good stats and reasons to stay in school if you're actually in school and thinking of quitting, but they have nothing to do with someone who's already left and already has a good job.
Dominic is obviously already the exception to these statistics, they no longer apply.
It would be like telling a lottery winner that the chances of winning the lottery are very slim.
@10, those statistics presume that all dropouts are the same. But I'll bet "Stranger News Editor" on the resume outstrips any old GED. Once you reach a certain point nobody cares what school you've got.
What Dom should do instead is just lie and put "Groton", "Choate" or "Thacher" down. No one'll ever check. Probably.
Congratulations to both of you. I know that Dom will be awesome as news ed, and hearing that we'll see more of Eli's long form investigative work is just wonderful.
I'm really not trying to be a troll, but I thought this year's election coverage sucked. I think Dom's editorials about policy are sharp and well-reasoned, but his reporting lacks. And The Stranger's response to getting a really key endorsement wrong in the Port race (tub o' crisco), just showed a contempt for understanding issues that effect working-class voters. You don't have to be the Seattle Union-Record, but some basic research would've kept you from seeming completely inconsistent and superficial.
The Stranger has added greatly to my rural (for the nonce) existence with humor, irreverence, snark, and above all, heart. Congrats and keep up the good work.
Congrats Eli and Dominic. I enjoy both of your writing.
I really hope you consider someone who will focus on social justice for your new hire. This perspective is sorely needed in Seattle, which hasn't had a female mayor in about 90 years.
@22, whatever constitutes my Anglophilia very much does not extend to that country's Great Schools, the attendees of which (much like those of ours) should for the most part be lined up against the wall and shot.
By the way, most fire twirlers can juggle, if it's hard to fill that.

But Dominic, will you still cover the construction/development beat? *crosses fingers*
eta until frizzelle gets hit by a bus while riding his bike during critical mass
those would be 2 great announcements
If you need any help with that drinking...

continue to use your powers for good.

I hope the promotions come with fatter paychecks too and not just new titles.
But I still think that Hutchinson piece a week ago was bush league. I will expect better from you guys in the future. Don't let me down you fuckers.
