I have no problem with McGwire's "statement," he was just trying not to incriminate himself or dime out fellow players that were still active. Unlike Palmeiro who straight up lied, or Canseco who was just trying to make a buck.
Pete Rose can get into the Hall just like you and me: by buying a ticket.
There's a difference between "performance-enhancing" and what Rose did. Rose BET ON HIS OWN TEAM, WHEN HE WAS THE MANAGER, which is functionally identical to throwing games (since he didn't bet on all of them). One guy cheats a little to get ahead (a time-honored tradition); the other guy calls into question the integrity of the results. No comparison.
BTW, corking your bat is counter-productive. Not only does it not work, it makes your bat LESS powerful.
Fnarf old timer, no need for the re-cap we all know what Rose did, and how wrong it was but the facts are still a little blurry. and Rose is a lot more important to the Game that this bozo.
Rose said he never bet against the Reds. I'm not sure how that's 'functionally identical to throwing games'. Please direct me to the transcripts where Rose admits he bet against the Reds.
I don't see how using steroids does not "call into question the integrity the results." How many (more) Cards games would have been lost if McGwire hadn't juiced?
I don't think Rose should ever be allowed in. Same goes for steroid users. They're a stain on baseball.
@12, in addition to the point raised @13, there's the little matter of Pete Rose the manager inserting Pete Rose the player into games, where by then he was the worst regular player in the majors, solely for the purpose of amassing records, but thereby hurting his team's chances to win; and manipulating his appearances to correspond with his betting.

Anyone who's interested in the topic should check it out, I found it really well made and interesting (and funny).
