Careful Dan, you'll upset the religious establishment.
2
Yeah, especially since I live a block away from your offices!
3
I think this is a good idea.
4
Why doesn't The Stranger publish them anyway?

you infidel dog coward pussies...
5
I'm waiting for the cartoon of Muhammad fucking a camel, because, you know, that was the only way that sick fucker could get any at all. If I draw it, will you publish it?
6
Why do you never say anything to offend Muslims?! I mean, um, Christians!
7
Because we can mock Islam at will and with impunity:

8
@4: We did publish them.
9
Excellent idea.
10
Jihad Jane is a textbook example of what happens to people who spend too much of their time horsin' around the Internet.
11
I would like to see a contest to see who can make the most offensive Mohamed cartoon. Slog / Stranger readers are a creative bunch, so there would be some great stuff. Maybe throw some offensive Jesus cartoons in there to even things out as well?
12
@11, I love it. I am sick of Muslim outrage.
13
the article isn't even about the Danish cartoons. It's about a cartoon by a Swede.
14
Great idea!
15
@ 11, there are lots of good blasphemous images of Mohammed and Jesus if you do a Google search (including one of Mohammed giving Jesus a blow job, but I suppose we can always use new ones.
16
Agreed, but threats are enough reason. Publish it.
17
The New York Times reports that Colleen R. LaRose – a blonde, green-eyed American from the suburbs of Philadelphia who called herself Jihad Jane on an Internet posting – stands accused of linking up with militants over the Internet to plot terrorist acts. ...

Racist, much?

What struck me is that she's clearly an unrepentant whore, showing her uncovered face in public like that.
18
Great idea that will never happen. Newspapers, it was nice knowing you.
19
Why is it that all those, who buy into the "must republish anti-muslim cartoons because of death threats" haven't said boo about, much less feel the need to republish Mark Fiore's cartoon animation after he received death threats from teabaggers? Now I expect this sort of lame-ass double standard from the right wing, but I don't recall ever seeing this mentioned in the Stranger, much less republished or even linked to. If you're going to get caught up in the right-wing's manufactured outrage, at least have the good sense to respond in kind when the act exactly like those they condemn (and you joined them in condemning).

After this and the "Are you gay?" idea, I'm thinking Dan Savage should be ombudsman FOR AMERICA.
21
I think that the cartoon was insensitive and out of line, but the reactionaries are just jumping enough sharks to fill the private aquarium of the average Bond villain. This actually would be a good way to deter the nutjobs from any more assassination attempts.
22
@19 I am not sure that is really comparable. This has not only been death threats, but also bounties being placed and actual attempts. Plus you had major demonstrations with the usual yelling and burning of things.

Lots of people get death threats all the time, this is a few levels above.
23
Colleen LaRose??

Of all the theist nuts, the converts are the worst. At some arabic person has the excuse of being born in this crap.
24

Swedish papers are republishing them.

25
Are there any Muhammad shaped journalism awards yet?
26
Great idea. What should the newspapers do about the continuing civilian deaths at the hands of US/NATO forces, for example, the 16+ deaths confirmed by NATO in the assault on Marja? Hmmm?

27
Step one: draw a figure. It can be any figure, like a stick figure or a snowman or a toaster oven

Step two: write "Mohammad" underneath. It's a common name, anyway.

Step three: have angry Islamists coming to kill you.
28
Radical Muslims are as sick as the Christian Taliban. Christians have killed abortion doctors, and Muslim nutcases killed Theo van Gogh - not to mention the incredibly sad 'honor killings' done in the name of their goofy gods.

John Lennon was right: Imagine no religion!
29
Just the one god actually.
30
And which "one god" would that be? Yours or mine?
31
You see, here's the funny part: You're "one god" says "kill all the unbelievers." And you assume that my "one god" says "peace, love, turn the other cheek." But the joke's on you, because my "one god" says nuke you fucking cretins into the Goddamned stone age."

You should be very thankful my finger isn't on the button.
32
Well, there's actually a shit ton of stuff that's contradictory within the religions. In Islam, for example, there are passages from the Koran and the Hadith that variously say, in essence, things like "coexist peacefully with Jews and Christians", "don't be ruled by non-Muslims", and "kill teh Jews". Sadly, a lot of people in any religion cherry-pick the "kill" ones rather than the "play nicely" ones.
33
You've been reading "Freakonomics". It's a neat thought, perhaps that would change the payoff function of the extremists sufficiently to prevent this from happening. Or perhaps it would not. The only problem is that these images are indeed somewhat vile, crude and inciting hatred, so do we really want to go down that road? Given that ex-post it would hardly be an appropriate response to such an event, once can doubt the credibility of any such commitment.
34
Brilliant.

This reminds me of the pro-choice group somewhere that had a fundraiser. People pledged to contribute X amount of money for each hour that ant-choice activists picketed abortion clinics...

Please wait...
