The German notion of responsibility has been a bit off ever since that whole Hitler falderal.
Ratzinger's in this up to his elbows.
2
I blame God for the whole mess :P
3
Well, I don't think the Vatican is going to extradite him to Germany for trial or anything, so this is all meaningless. Other than, perhaps, to further confirm what we already suspected.
4
But they have such expensive new commercials.
5
I wonder if the pope would agree to a news conference or does he really believe he is above that sort of thing?
6
Chance of a European country initiating criminal proceedings against a standing pope: Nil.
7
So the bear shat in the woods then?
8
Because the pope can't even be fallible, let alone culpable.
9
Wouldn't it be a wonderful new day if we could put the pope on trial and see his sorry, hateful, miserable ass in jail?!?
10
@7 Is the bear Catholic? Does the pope shit in the woods?

Also in the NYT article:
The priest, identified only with the initial H, was moved to Munich in January 1980, where he was supposed to undergo therapy, a decision that was taken β€œwith the approval of the archbishop,” according to the statement. Benedict was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982.

In June 1986, the priest was convicted of sexually abusing minors and given an 18-month suspended sentence with five years of probation, fined 4,000 Deutsche marks and ordered to undergo therapy.

A slap on the wrist and a fine of less than one month's salary. They all deserve to fry in hell.

Ratzingers entire history with abuse cases is fucking disgraceful. I wonder how much more there is.

@10, my favorite paired phrases!--always spoken with a slight frown and a puzzled, distracted air.
14
What really bothers me about the Vatican's responses to child sex abuse scandals is, "Yeah, some of our priests are child molesters. But you know what? There are even more child molesters who AREN'T priests. So, you know, go focus on them!"
15
@13 Another favorite paired phrase of mine is: Teach a man to fish and you will walk a thousand miles in his shoes."
16
@1 "that whole Hitler falderal": definitely my phrase of the week.

17
@15

Give a man fire and he's warm for the night. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

The priest was supposed to undergo therapy, and after he (supposedly?) completed his therapy, they let him return to work. Perhaps they believed that therapy could cure him. Perhaps they believed that grace and therapy could cure him.

The cases where the same guy was repeatedly moved around bother me more. This case is just sad.

@1 -- Ever since 'that whole Hitler falderal', Germany has done a pretty amazing job in taking RESPONSIBILITY for its crimes against humanity, and deals with it in ways that other countries could learn from. But you know, keep calling them Nazis, like any well-informed person would do.

Apart from that: Fuck Ratze and the Catholic church.

Please wait...
