What exactly does "...their median wealth amounts to only $5." mean? As written, I read it as, "half of black women are worth more than $5, and half are worth less than $5." Please elucidate, Charles. Thank you.
2
Timmytee, I think it means that the most common wealth level is $5. It's not the average wealth, and it's not a percentile. In the simplest terms, it's what this category typically owns.

Pretty shocking number. But then again my wealth right now is so negative, due to student loans, that I would LOVE to be worth $5.

Good Morning Charles,
I won't quibble with the data. The former is paradoxical (I've know that for a while. I used to work in diagnostic imaging and noticed the patients race). The latter needs more information (are these "single black women" mothers? What is their education level etc.).

Clearly, much needs to be done in the community. The data suggests a crisis.

Grade school, people!

Median = value for which half the population is above, and half below. If it's even, you split the middle two.

Mode = value with the highest representation.

Half of black women are worth less than $5, half worth more. According to this study (jesus christ that's messed up...).

OTOH, it seems as if black murkins are less worried than white murkins.

Awwwww da po po black man.... Wait! We have a black president and first lady... Things are a changin'. Sorry Charlie your pity card ain't gonna work...
7
WOW! @6 racist much? do you really think that having a black president magically erases disproportionately low income, long prison sentences, underfunded schools, and high rates of disease incidence? Oh right, it's 'their' fault because they're just too lazy to try, and reporting or talking about racial disparity in any way is whining or racism against whites.

Who says I'm white? And I never said anything about magic erasors...

"Things are a changin'" get it?

The cancer thing and shorter life span probably is a race/ethnic problem (it mirrors similar data in Africa) that no one can really change (for now). I'll give you that...

@8,

Africans don't have high rates of cancer. Try again.

Um, yeah they do!
Growing Cancer Rates in Sub-Saharan Afri…
Highlights:
Another African epidemic is taking the spotlight, “cancer”.
Experts say, aging and infectious diseases are increasing Africa’s cancer burden.
More than any other region in the developing world, sub-Saharan Africa faces the twin burden of non-infectious and infectious diseases.
Now, count cancer among the non-communicable ailments taking a growing toll in Africa...

And that's just one article...

Growing Cancer Rates in Sub-Saharan Afri…

“African men and women are not only more likely to get prostate or breast cancer respectively at a younger age, but also more likely to be diagnosed at a more developed stage of the disease…

…This has prompted a number of scientists to speculate that there may be a genetic component contributing to the development of cancer in Africans”….

@ YLLINAD, I never said that you were white and the color of your skin has no effect on the stupidity of your comment.
What's changing? Are schools in black neighborhoods receiving more funding? Do black men and women no longer comprise a disproportionate amount of current inmates and convicted felons? Have the unemployment and poverty rates for black americans improved? Are black americans more likely to have health insurance?
OK, so there's a black president, how has anything actually changed for the average black american?

@12 Do you read anything?
