Ugh! Does Canada really want to be as backward as we are?
2
Excuse me, Dan, but bathshit?
3
It's like they have their own crazy version of our 2001. When can they dump Harper and get an actual compassionate group of humans in charge again?
4
@2: Canada is full of poop-in-the-shower conservatives.
5
In before "but they've got health care"
6
@ 5, and I'm sure these dopes would love to go to the American model too.
7
@6, the conservatives here really would. Their leotardedness makes me sad to live here some days.
8
omg... you need to pull a dlisted-style '...bathshit (typo but I'm leaving it)..." on that, lmao. though I'm not sure I really needed the picture that left me in my head this early in the morning...
9
Maybe if the pontiff from the previous story could ever be called on his complicity in institutionalized rape and abuse, it would help erode his organization's pretense of high moral ground. The Church represents the greatest global obstacle to family planning and their lobbying efforts have been enormously successfully, as attested by famines and soaring HIV infection rates worldwide.
10
The current Canadian government has been called the most anti-woman of the modern period. Stephen Harper is a fag-hating Christian who idolized George Bush (the dumber one) and is trying to militarize Canadian culture. His government is complicit in the torture of Afghanis and under him Canada became the only Western nation not to even attempt to secure the release of its citizens in Guantanamo (look up Omar Khadr). He's widely despised but also has a strong conservative Christian base and his continuing hold on power is also supported by Canada's outdated electoral system -- fully 60% of voters voted against him in the last election, yet he still kept his job. He's never (yet) been able to form a majority government, although he behaves as though he already has one. Unfortunately, while Canada has fewer "bathsthit" crazy politicians, it also has really no major player who can rally all those opposed to Harper.
11
@1: The Conservatives definitely do. Stephen Harper, our Prime Minister, used to be president of the National Citizens Coalition. Here's an excerpt from their Wikipedia article. Any of this sound familiar?

The National Citizens Coalition is a Canadian conservative lobby group, founded by Colin M. Brown in 1967, originally founded in opposition to the concept of a national healthcare system. It supports privatization, tax cuts, and government spending cuts and opposes laws that limit spending by non-party organizations during election campaigns. It has been heavily involved in advertising, political campaigns and legal challenges in support of its goals of "more freedom with less government.

12
Perhaps this is where gee-dub's secret advisory cronies went after Obama won....? So sorry, Canada. You were my light of sanity when this country was sinking like a rock under the moronic shrubbery. Send your icky, anti-birth-control politicians to Utah - they'll fit right in. Or Texas - they'll probably fit in there too.
13
Wow I thought we had kinda cornered the market in batshit crazy conservatives here in the US. Sorry to hear Canada's giving us competition. :(
14
Conservatives aren't happy unless everyone is miserable and afraid. That's how they get their wars. Fill people full of fear, anger, and hopelessness, and then tell them some foreign country full of brown muslims is to blame.
15
Aah yes, the Margaret Sanger tactic of promoting birth control specifically targeted at people of color to reduce their population. At least those that want to follow in her footsteps should have the courage to disclose their intentions instead of masking them as method of saving "lives", which is total BS. Developing nations certainly are not buying it anymore.
16
Canada's Health Care is delivered by the provinces - it's in their Constitution. Thus, this only affects foreign aid, while the provinces continue to ignore the idiots in Ottawa for anything related to mining, transportation, fisheries, or health care.

Which is also why all the horror stories about health care in Canada come from one Province - the same one the dickweed conservative PM comes from - Alberta.
17
You gotta help us. We're dying up here, guys.

--a drowning Canadian
18
Alberta: the province whose solution to homelessness was to give people one-way bus tickets to British Columbia.
19
Well, Dingo, that's New York City's "solution" to the homeless problem as well, so they're not the only ones.
20
Oh? Where did they send them?
21

Harper's an embarrassment. But the bigger embarrassment is the 35% of the population that votes for him.
22
Dingo, they send them anywhere they want to go. Literally. Even if it involves buying them a plane ticket. I guess they figure it's a lot cheaper in the long run.
23
Hmm. Creepy and idiotic as that is, at least they're not quite as brazenly offloading their problem onto their neighbours since they can claim they're just helping people to get back "home." And I'm guessing the idea's been about as successful for New York as it has for Alberta (which is to say, not at all).
24
16

Is Alberta the province whose Premier went to Miami to get his heart surgery?

(Because he wanted "the best care available")?

Even if he had to pay for it himself?

Even though the exact same procedure was available in Canada?

Free?

Was that guy from Alberta?
25
24: The wealthy man who chose to pay for his own surgery and recuperate in his condo in Florida rather than get the same or a better surgery for free in Canada was the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. This has all been explained to you at some length before; do you still have trouble understanding it? Because if so you may want to seek remedial reading help elsewhere.

26
Harper is so out of touch with Canadian's it's pathetic. He supports the seal hunt (which most Canadians oppose), and yesterday said:

“The reason drugs are illegal is because they are bad. And even if these things were legalized, I can predict with a lot of confidence that these would never be respectable businesses run by respectable people.”

Right. Just like every liquor store is a hotbed of crime and everyone who runs one is a scumbag.
27
By the way, this was in response to the overwhelming number of questions he received in a recent interview about legalizing pot.
28
@15: Do you even think about what you're saying, you nutter? Nobody is advocating making birth control/contraception mandatory. The point of making it available is to help people avoid having children they do not want.
If minority individuals want to have children, they will have children. But I suppose that you'd rather that they have children whether or not they want to.
Don't you oppose abortion? Easily-obtained contraception helps prevent unwanted pregnancy. Fewer unwanted pregnancies means far fewer abortions. See, if you nutjobs actually wanted to stop abortions from happening, you'd spend less time trying to punish those who administer or receive them, and more time going after the root cause of them. I'd call this kind of hypocrisy un-American, but sadly, it seems to be all too common in this country.
29
Wow. The Conservative government just became even more awful. I didn't think it was possible.
30
@28 "See, if you nutjobs actually wanted to stop abortions from happening, you'd spend less time trying to punish those who administer or receive them, and more time going after the root cause of them."

Funny - that's what Carl Wimmer (asshole - UT) and the other repugnant lawmakers here were told as they criminalized miscarriage....

Canada, I think you have a better chance of saner heads prevailing. We're stuck with places like Utah and Texas, both of which seem to keep reproducing ignorance at a staggering rate.
31
@28: Loveschild's position seems to be that the only way to end poverty is for women to have as many children as possible. Because, you know, that worked so well for Romania under Ceauşescu.
32
The irony of this is that the lives that these same batshit crazy conservatives claim are murdered by abortion, would also be saved by providing contraception to women in poor countries.
33
LC @15 is up for the Mutterkreuz this year?
34
@32: Hence the further irony of Loveschild's nonexistent "Margaret Sanger tactic".
35
25
are you sure he wasn't from Alberta?
Will in Seattle seems to think he was from Alberta.
36
Things like this make me incredibly sad to be Canadian.
@3
there is no set term, that douche can be in power so long as the "majority" keeps voting him in.

@35;

@25 is correct - it was Danny Williams - premier of Newfoundland and Labrador who made headlines recently by heading to Miami for surgery (which is available in Canada btw - my guess is that he wanted to escape winter in St. John's for a bit while he was at it).

also; Stephen Harper isn't really from Alberta either - he grew up in a suburb of Toronto, but he wants to pretend he's a cowboy just like Yankee GWB did in Texas.
39
Margaret Sanger studied infant mortality rates, and wanted to reduce the numbers of 10th, 11th, & 12th children were dying. Fewer children means better care is taken for each. More resources are available for each child. Each child is more precious and more cared for.

If we truly value children, we want the best for them.

Apparently, Loveschild does not agree.
40
Oh thank god they will no longer be able to better us. *sigh* what a relief.
41
Funny but it seems that the Conservative Party is stretching its lead over the Lieberals and their leader,Michael Ignatieff, a Canadian who spent 30 years of his life teaching at Harvard ,or was it Yale, I always get those two mixed up....
Leave it to the Americans to sling mud at our country of Canada, the true north strong and free, while ignoring all their own problems....
Did you guys pass your health care bill yet, through your inneffectual House of Representatives and Senate....I'm proud to be a Canadian and I can get any treatment that I require without mortgaging my future
People in glass houses............(fill in the blank)
42
Turns out it was all a mistake (they claim):

43
The Harper Governement has pulled a 180 here and reveresed its decision regarding birth control. This only happened after a hell storm from the oppositon parties in the House of Commons and a public outcry. The majority of Canadian's did not vote for Harper including myself and he does not represent fully 70% of us!!!!!!!!!

If only they would now provide women with access to safe abortions. Unsafe abortions are what these women are forced to live with resulting in severe infections and even death!

44
You can also listen to CBC Radio 1's program The Current for more on this.

http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/2010/201003…
45
That is NUTS. In Ethiopia they have a saying that a pregnant woman has one foot in the grave. In poor countries, pregnancy can still be a very, very dangerous thing. Birth control absolutely saves lives, and it reduces the abortion rate, too!

Please wait...
