I thought The Incredibles was a pretty decent adaptation of The Fantastic Four. Does that one count?
2
yawn...

when will this FUCKING ENDLESS cycle of superhero movies END?!?!?
3
@2:

Never - the successful ones seem to be just about the only movies that make any money for studios nowadays.

And really Paul, the two FF movies weren't that bad - certainly not "Wolverine: Origins" or "Daredevil" bad or "Electra" bad or "Ghost Rider" bad, that's for sure.

Of all the major comic book heroes, Captain America is one of the least compelling. Still, I think audiences will eat it up when this movie comes out, in 1940.
5
The only way they could have gotten me to this movie was if they had cast this guy: http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/ad147…

I've said it before and I'll say it again. A WWII Captain America movie with the Invaders could be good. Especially if it uses the story lines out the Brubaker series. Plus Chris Evans is actually pretty good. I quite enjoyed him in Sunshine and Push, and he was the only thing about the Fantastic Four movies that wasn't awful.
7
I'm with you, Paul. While I thought John Krasinski was a weird prospect, he would have at least made this a little entertaining and possibly watchable. Now I don't care.

And @2, don't look for the superhero movies to end anytime soon -- besides Captain America, there is a new Spider-Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, the Avengers, and likely a dozen other things coming down the the pike we don't even know of yet. I think the studios look at these as surefire winners because comics have a built-in audience, with a legion of fans made up of those eager to see this succeed or fail (both of whom will see the movie to either praise it or find something else to rant about).
8
Meh. I'm going back for more Alice.
9
Good. Then you can leave Chris Evans all to me.

Ya-Ummm.
10
I'm with 9 - Chris Evans taking his shirt off is bad because....?
11
While they're butchering the story, do you think they could redesign the costume to something like a speedo? They can put a white star on the crotch and everything, very patriotic.
12
This is the problem with casting movies with young (or young-ish) male actors these days...almost none of them have any balls. They're all vaguely metrosexual, in touch with their feelings, blah, blah, blah. Captain America has to be played by a real man, one who can project confidence and moral certitude, not beta/omega male aloofness (a la Krasinski) or blissfully ignorant arrogance (Evans). But who else is there? Seriously, name an actor under 30 who isn't angling to become the next rom-com jerkoff. Jude Law? He's too old, and he's a wimp...dude would get knocked on his ass by a stiff wind. Clive Owen? Also too old. Fucking Zac Efron? Even Gerald Butler is now sharing a marquee with Aniston in some shitty chick flick. Matt Damon is close, but he too is getting long in the tooth. And besides, he wouldn't touch Captain America after his buddy Affleck's experience with Daredevil.

The only ones even close were all in the Star Trek remake (Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, Karl Urban), which is why it kicked so much ass.
13
Scott Porter was my personal favorite choice.
14
I'd be totally psyched about Betty White playing Capt. America.
15
please stop, please!
16
But -- but what about Ben Ryan!? Remember him? He was DESTINED for the role!

Remember? The guy who made THIS video?

(Quite possibly my favourite thing on Youtube ever.)

@3: "the two FF movies weren't that bad -"

The second FF movie ended with the Silver Surfer killing a smoke monster Galactus by blowing him up. Nothing that retarded can ever be forgiven, or properly compared with a film. They will forever be bananas when comparing them to the apples that are actual movies.
18
@2, Superhero movies will never end as long as studios can still make a buck off them. Duh.

Yes, some are terrible: Daredevil, Catwoman, etc.

But some have been great. Iron Man was very good. The two most recent Batman movies have been pretty good. And most have done pretty well financially. Almost all of the more recent Batman, Spiderman, and Ironman have made serious bank. Even Wolverine, which kinda sucked, made big bank for the studio.

So, no end in sight for superhero movies.
19
I LOVE Chris Evans. He just seems like such a lovely person. Apparently he's super liberal, a gay rights supporter (his equally hot brother is gay), and is an all-around good guy. Very Captain America in my book.
20
God, you're all a bunch of bitchy little Marvel queens.

Chris Evans was hilarious in the FF films and Not Another Teen Movie, and then demonstrated a ton of range between Push, Sunshine, and Teardrop Diamond--the guy's got acting chops. He's actually really physically buff: go google around a while and find the ones of him working out that my wife showed me. He's stacked.

I was rooting for him the minute I heard he was in the running, and look forward to him slapping the shit out of the krauts.
21
@19 and to echo what he said, every recounted anything with Evans has been that he's an ultra-nice, chill, humble, and incredibly gracious guy. I'm boggled by the amount of HE SUCKS!, but I suppose the same bullshit was hurled at Tobey McGuire and Christian Bale, and they both turned out crap, too. I mean, only $400,000,000 and $700,000,000 between them for the high water marks? Slackers.
22
Also, Paul, you make me cry. Why not link the Captain America 1990 montage set to the Team America World Police "fuck yeah" song?
23
Wake me up when Deadpool has a release date.
24
@16:

Holy Crap, Batman! That guy is totally Steve Rogers. Christ, he couldn't be more gung-ho, bootstrap-pullin-up American if he shit a dozen apple pies!

Wonder if he can act...
25
I'm with you @6
26
While the Fantastic Four movies were on the bad side Chris Evans was spot-on as Johnny Storm and really the best thing about them. And remember Steve Rogers was not initially an alpha male, he was a 4F weakling who volunteered for science experimentation. Captain America is not about a physique but about the fact that Steve Rogers was mentally and emotionally Captain Amarica and just needed the physicality to match his heart.
27
And of course he can act. Didn't you see the way he tossed that dress shirt off? Did you not see his smile when the song went WHEN I SEE YOUR SMILE...? As long as Captain America is an obsessive, narcissistic, nut-brained stalker, this guy is the man for the job.
28
Schmaky is dead right.Chris Evans is typical of the feminine male model type that Hollywood is pushing as materiel for action flicks.Captain America is supposed to be a man World War II Paratroopers and Infantry Marines looked up to and were willing to follow.More Airborne Ranger, less "wow, look at my abs!" I was hoping Mark Valley would get the role.Besides being a good actor and looking like Cap,he is a West Point grad, former U.S. Army Officer, and decorated Gulf War veteran. That resume is a rarity in modern Hollywood circles.Chris Evans is not a bad actor but look at the other project he has lined up.Surprize! It's a romantic comedy.
At the least they could have hired Jon Hamm.He looks and acts like a grown man and has a 1940's vibe onscreen. Can you see Chris Evans in a fistfight? So how is he going to project the aura of a super-soldier who is a seasoned battlefield veteran?Good thing this is only a movie and it's not like viewers in other countries are going to look at Cap as a symbol of America the way James Bond is a symbol for Britain.Good thing right?
29
@28, ha ha ha, Jon Hamm!?! That wrinkly old guy is pushing 40! WTF?

Evans is fine for what this piece of shit will be -- this is freaking CAPTAIN AMERICA that we're talking about -- it's another fucktarded Marvel Comics movie for little kids. The target audience for this thing wouldn't know what a World War 2 soldier was supposed to look like; they weren't even alive for the first Gulf War.
30
It should have been Julie Andrews playing Captain America. Could you imagine? A glam British lady? She could sing songs while taking names and kicking ass!

But yeah, casting John Krasinski would have been an interesting take on this dull boring super hero. Chris Evans looks nice but that's about it.

Please wait...
