Those close to the "irregular" need medicine for what?? Being close (kind, compassionate, loving)? Following what they mistakenly thought were the tenets of Christianity?
This stuff is making me sicker by the day.
PS I am ready & willing to prove and defend atheism. Also the hearty goodness of graham cracker and frosting sandwiches.
I'm not up on my Catholic dogma, but by refusing to perform the sacraments, isn't this, in effect, consigning the person's soul to hell? (go to hell, go straight to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200)
If one were inclined to believe such stories, that's pretty harsh. Especially the last rites. That's basically telling the family that their departed loved one will forever be consigned to the flames of hell.
Good thing no hocus-pocus a smug man in a dress does over a coffin has anything to do with the dead's relationship (or lack thereof) to his God (or lack thereof).
This is how the Catholic Church conflates pedophilia and homosexuality, one of which is a genuine perversion. (I have always like Thomas Nagel's definition of the latter in his excellent essay "Sexual Perversion" -- http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~mcarthun/Na… -- well worth the read).
By deflecting the animus onto gays in general, they perpetrate a second crime. The US Episcopal Church is moving in the right direction, and Dan should give 'em some love.
If you read the whole comment by the bishop, he also says "Homosexuality, which is a disease, has become something normal. They sprout like poisonous mushrooms, and...they celebrate this plague." I am NOT saying Catholicism=Nazism, and I'm NOT saying refusing gays communion is comparable to the Holocaust, but this disturbing phrase did bring to mind a 1938 German children's book called Der Giftpilz, or The Poisonous Mushroom (in which Jews are portrayed as, among other things, lecherous pedophiles attempting to prey on Aryan children, and a moral cancer degrading all of society). (See it at http://www.calvin.edu/academic/cas/gpa/t…). The Nazis were in a class of their own in terms of evil, but it is still scary to hear reps of the Catholic Church use the same metaphors decades later.
The Catholic Church is the real perverter of minds. And anybody who believes their phoney baloney mumbo jumbo about any alleged heaven and alleged hell deserves the mental anguish the church and all religions are so skilled at dishing out.
@11 i think you CAN draw a pretty clear comparison between the current religious right stance on homosexuality and nazi philosophy in general, simply because anytime a person takes issue with someone's inherent being there is only one end game that can come of it. what people like this bishop douche object to is that gays exist, thus what they want is for gays not to exist. give 'em enough rope and they'll try to hang you with it.
@3: Correct. The Catholic Church has convinced their followers that the priests, by virtue of controlling who receives Last Rites, hold the keys to heaven and hell. There is no salvation without The Company. "If you wanna get to God you gotta go through us."
If this is how they behave when they have their threat of eternal damnation for their actions... just imagine what we'd have to put up with if they didn't believe that only Good People get to go play harps and halos with Jebus.
@13 - Bite your tongue. MOST people raised in a suppressive religious environment don't have the means they need to get out of it. Not everyone has the benefits of the modern world to introduce them to contrary ideas. Those of us that do pat ourselves on the back and believe we've escaped by the pure merits of our own intelligence, but that's bullshit.
@3 - According to Catholic dogma, all non-Catholic Christians are going to hell, too. So yeah, refusing salvation-giving sacraments is harsh, but not unusually so, for them.

Read my blog. http://mennonnosapiens.com/
Seriously.
If I had a relative like that, I'd piss on his grave.
Big difference.
Of course, Dan Savage doesn't tell us that state Sen. Cal Anderson was buried with a televised funeral mass at St. James Cathedral.
Woops, I meant The Church.

@20: You may be too charitable.

Idiots.....
Did you forget about the almighty dollar?
