Ricky Martin was in?
2
No way, Dan.

Are you trolling us again?

No freakin' way.
3
I've know that for about 15 years now. Big deal.
4
Who's Ricky Martin?
5
Blah blah. Hope he is going to use his money and fame to undo some of the damage he did. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1437849…
6
Please--as if this wasn't a decent sign (mostly SFW)http://socialitelife.celebuzz.com/archiv…

As a person who has had a life time of "I hope you're sitting down" over the last two months which involved hearing such heartbreaking phrases: "cancer", "dead", "hospice", "stroke","brain tumor", etc. I'm happy to report this one made me smile. Good for Ricky Martin.

This one from Bilerico advises sitting down as well. I recommend sitting down with a sketch pad. http://www.bilerico.com/2010/03/more_shi…
8
@4 - he's the Chachi of the 90s.
9
Jesus H Christ. After his decades of shouting "I'm straight!" Even going so far to say "If I was gay, why wouldn't I admit it?" He's just looking to court his gay fans, since the straight women have moved on...
10
Well, there goes his career!

Oh, wait...
11
I'd like a celeb to come out of the closet at the top of their game, not when they are two steps away from doing infomercials for Oxyclean.
12
@9: Legend has it that women still showed up in droves to court Rock Hudson, even after pretty much everyone knew he was a "confirmed bachelor".

Gonna guess they aren't going anywhere.
13
Who's Chachi? (You gol-durned young'uns. . . .)
14
Oh memories. I was living in DC in 2000 when he came to perform for one of GHWB's pre-inauguration deals, and even then I couldn't drag my ass to see his miserable show. The only motivator would have been a soused Barb Bush doing pelvic thrusts to "She Bangs." Happy coming out, tool box.
15
Hmph.
16
How absolutely shocking.
17
@12 I mean that the straight women have moved on from Ricky Martin.

Honestly, his last actual album was in 2005, and barely even placed.

So, let's court the gay crowd as they seem to be driving the dance music craze (as usual) before we release another album!
18
any word on a William Hung follow up? is he gay now too?
19
I'm going to be positive and say good for him.
20
@17: Oh, I was just saying that the straight women who were reeeeeeeeeeally into Ricky are still going to be after him.

"Omigawd, Leelee, we're in Ri'y Mah'in's hotel room!"
21
"Oh, Leelee, what is he doing to that bellhop?!"
22
Whatever. Is he still singing?
23
I think all those brave high school students made him ashamed.
24
Thank you, Baconcat and Misanthrope, for helping me start the day with a laugh.
25
Nobody's said this yet, but ... FUCK, HE IS STILL HOT!
26
@11: Ellen DeGeneres, Melissa Etheridge.

You have to look towards the women to find the ones who have enough balls to come out at the top of their game.
27
Kudos to him.

I came out to three of my closest friends this week, and believe me, it was hard.

I wish all the best of life to Ricky Martin - he is a man of extreme courage.

For those of you who will argue that he waited until he was financially secure, wouldn't you do the same? If you answer no, you have NO idea what it means to be in any level of spotlight.
28
@11 - That's not a smart financial move. When your profession requires you to be in the public eye, and considering how "gay" is treated these days, I don't blame him for waiting until he felt he's financially secure, IF that's the case...

@26 - Because of the prototypical fantasy of most men, gay women are easier to accept than gay men.
29
I just find this rather hard to believe!

MT3- I hope everything goes well!
30
I have had a few friends come out to me and it was really hard for all of them. .. even tho' I knew . . .and they said they thought I knew.
One male friend wore a wedding ring and made stuff up about his wife. He had fake pictures of him and a wife in his wallet and setting around his house. He went to the most extremes to hide it. It was such a relief for him to come out and quit putting so much effort into the imaginary wife!
All the males cried, all the females laughed. . . but I could see they liberated themselves. Not having to hide it or watch what they say anymore. It was interesting to see the difference in my gay friends once they came out too.
After hiding it for so long, for whatever reasons, I can see it being hard to come out. So I say, not shocking at all but good for Ricky, good for freeing himself, good for being proud and happy.
And hell ya'. .. he is still very hawt! Gorgeous!
31
@28: In some ways this is true. But only to a point, and only among certain demographics, and the rest is a male assumption that doesn't pan out in reality. Ellen DeGeneres' career dropped immediately into the toilet and was flushed straight into the sewer. She only came back through several years of hard fighting. Melissa Etheridge was fortunate because she had never pretended to be someone she was not while performing, so she didn't have to overcome a career's worth of overt visual and verbal lies.

Coming out is hard for *everyone*, not just guys. That said, congratulations on finding your own courage.
32
Welcome. Your arrival has been long overdue. Not that it was a surprise, but the right time is different for all of us.
33
What a waste of a fine man.
34
Best wishes, MT3.
35
He said he was advised to stay in the closet by friends who told him that if he came out, it would hurt his career. I'm not so sure - even today - that advice is erroneous (although, of course, it is morally wrong). It's possible there may have been a bit of backlash by him not coming out.

He's 38 - and that's old in pop music terms. He's also fabulously wealthy now (his flame died out in this country a while ago, but he was huge in Latin America), so he probably isn't worried about missing out on future pop music earnings.

Therefore, I don't think there's anything particularly brave about his decision. It was - at last - just the right thing to do.
36
I was wondering when Loveschild would show up. LC, the only waste is the years that RM spent hiding and denying himself.

Or did you think it a waste in some other way? Facts and specifics, please, not meaningless "it's just a waste" or "think about the children."

And did he become any less fine today? You admit he's a good person. Or that he was.
37
That most recent thing I've seen him do was a commercial to entice me to visit Puerto Rico. So yeah, I don't think this will affect his career in the US one bit, as I don't think he can really still claim he has one.
38
LC is trying to say she had the horn for him.

If she makes vague and meaningless statements we get to interpret them however the hell we want.
39
Next up, Robbie Williams...
40
I get the impression that it is purely from a physical perspective. And, the need to believe that all men find her attractive makes it a waste. It can no longer be assumed that if Ricky Martin met her, he'd have the hots for her.

Mr. Martin might have the hots for the guy I linked earlier, so, there is a chance she'd find him a waste as well. Me? I'd wouldn't mind sketching either of them. Both are lovely.
41
Hmmmmm... I always thought that he was bi, but whatever. Best of luck to him.
42

@36 Ricky Martin was a mighty fine male specimen and having to visualize him throwing his life and whatever was left of his career away like this is saddening. Sorry, but to any women that found this guy attractive it is a waste. For his sake I just hope he doesn't end up with some disease, rather than see him end his days like that, bed ridden with HIV/Aids or some new mutating sexually transmitted disease I know that most of his fans would rather see him live a quiet life of celibacy. He can be what he wants but the least he can do know is spare us having to see such a tragedy plastered all over the net and tv.
43
@42: Not everyone can be as closeted and unhappy as you, Lovesbailo.
44
@28, I agree with 31. That may be true for femme type lesbians or bi girls... but it's certainly not true for butch dykes. The straight guys may not hate us the way they do gay boys, but they don't like to be our friends... or 'let' their girlfriends be our friends either. And hell, if I were femme... I definitely would not be feeling privileged by the straight boy attention, KWIM?
45
@43, Baconcat, but all our peeps over at Faux News sure try.
46
" I know that most of his fans would rather see him live a quiet life of celibacy"

Good to know you found a new group that has chosen you as their personal spoke person. Or you really a personal intimate friend of most of his fans?

Oh ... And, some of us can find a man attractive and not want to bang him. Thus, we don't care if he doesn't want to bang us.
47
Well...Loveschild. The least you could do is to stop posting and spare the rest of us from seeing you die slowly of hatred. I sincerely hope that someday you'll have an epiphany and see that the only person you hurt with your judgements is yourself.
48
@43- Elected Republicans are sure trying!
49
Speaking of "think of the children" - it seems that is exactly what Ricky Martin was think of (at least insofar as living openly and honestly to provide an example to his sons).

Martin has said that it was the birth of his twin sons that helped him realize that the time was right to come out.
50
@7 - Kim, I am sorry you are having a tough time of it. Virtual hugs from the other side of the country. Also, thanks for your link- beautiful beautiful man in that corset. I had to remember to breathe.
51
I am so shocked not.
52
You girls shouldn't be too hard on Rick-
he was probably waiting for his parents to finish paying for his education before he outed.
53
Thank goodness it didn't take a an arrest for him to come out (George, I'm looking at you).
54
@33

Like you had a chance.
55
Like anyone is fucking surprised that Ricky Martin's gay.
56
@ 42 "For his sake I just hope he doesn't end up with some disease, rather than see him end his days like that, bed ridden with HIV/Aids or some new mutating sexually transmitted disease I know that most of his fans would rather see him live a quiet life of celibacy."

Wow, just wow.Is she the biggest fucking bitch on earth or what? God, how does she not get sick of herself? If I was that asshole, I would have put a bullet in my head long ago~
57
We should start a betting pool. Who's next? Anderson Cooper? John Mahoney? Teller?
58
@ 42 - You poor, closeted man. You didn't have a chance with Ricky anyway (just like you don't have a chance with Dan, and yet you keep that torch burning for him, don't you?)
59
@ C from Mass, Thank you. The photo of him made me smile this morning. Wish I could sketch better!

@Jason, Try and not let the poison get to you. I'm glad you're around and that your the type of person to care if you came off as an asshole. That is a wonderful quality. Have a good evening.
60
@42.. and you say you have gay friends ? whatthefuckever.
61
Ricky Martin=Not a bad blowjob in the place-Just sayin'
62
Hahahahahaha!
63
GTFO!
64
@57-Smart money is on Chevy Chase.
65
WTF? First Clay Aiken and now Ricky Martin. Can Armageddon be far behind?

But seriously... Everyone has their own timetable. Some remain closeted their entire lives. I wish Ricky much happiness and love.
66
I love how all the truly famous are cawing in these comments about how not much of a star RM is/was.
67
@39....

OMG YES YES YES!!! Robbie Williams is so dang HOT.......
68
I say it's brave of him, considering the stereotypical machismo and especial homophobia of latin-american cultures.
69
Wooopty freaking dooo!!! so another fag comes out of the closet BIG DEAL. He is cute and we all knew he was gay. Lets all move on!! Oh wait here is a good sexy video of him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-WG4UYsa…

I would do him
70
Yay!! I was number sixty nine my favorite number!!
71
#11 - younger younger, no one gives a flying fuck when you want them to come out.
72
I wish you people wouldn't keep falling for the Loveschild thing.

I mean, the writing style's not even consistent from day to day. Come on. Don't feed the trolls.

Oh, yeah, and good for Ricky, I guess. I mean... duh. But it's cool, you know.
73
@64-- I'm betting on Kevin Spacey or Ed Koch.
74
Ricky can be gay all he wants. He still put extremely yummy women w/ hips in his "La Vida Loca" video, for which I am grateful. & better late than never on coming out. Ppl do dumb things on their assumed way to the top, get there, & realize they are not themselves. Least he's out now.

@ 59, Kim in Portland: I won't be coming to Seattle again until Spring 2011, & you're in, well, Portland. But if there was a Slog Happy then, & I went, & you went, I'd so be buying you drinks. I think there's a subgroup on Slog who are kinda like a Kim fanclub. ;) Thanks for reminding ppl that Christian DNE bigot. Yay for drink-n-draw nights: as an artist (comic books is what will bring me back to the Emerald City), that made me smile, pretty men we can just look at & not wanna bang.
75
Dan, you were the first person I thought of when I saw the headline. You called this how many years ago?
76
Right LC, cos people who blow their brains out and live in shame aren't a waste at all.

Oh wait..he's a profitable and happy musician....and you're a lowlife christopath with an internet addiction and need for constant negative attention...who's life is a sad waste again?
77
@ 73- Ed Koch= Fucking awesome.
78
Hopefully he does good things with it now. I'd like to see more of RM as an advocate. Sorry but the man is hot hot hot. Also put me down for hoping James Franco is the next celeb to come out.
79
The Gay Agenda Recruiters have done it again!!!
80
# 11
I'd like a celeb to come out of the closet at the top of their game, not when they are two steps away from doing infomercials for Oxyclean.

Have we forgotten Neil Patrick Harris? Although technically he wasn't at the top of his game, since his career has soared since he came out. *AND* he got an Old Spice commercial.

Poor Ricky - Neil's more convincing as a ladie's man out of the closet than Ricky ever was in it!
81
@ Eva,

Aw... Thanks. Perhaps we will catch each other some day. I am with you on "La Vida Loca", loved the dancing in it. My style is kind of a Latin-Belly Dancing fusion, great fun and great exercise.

Happy drawing.
82
The idea of Loveschild having a sexual fantasy about Ricky Martin makes me ill.
83
@ 83 The idea of Loveschild having a sexual fantasy about Ricky Martin makes me giggle.

But, the idea that she thinks a gay life is a wasted one kills the giggle immediately. That's really fucking tragic.

@ Kim: I sure hope so! & hey, good exercise tips always appreciated, I'm newly on that path. Wish there was Slogmail. (BTW, other SLOG buddies, as it gets closer I'm gonna be talking about my much-anticipated trip to your great city.) Here ends the thread hijacking.

84
@ 42 - Thank you for the good laugh.
85
@ #42 hey Loves- er I mean Hateschild-

Looks like your brethren are the ones "ending their days... bed ridden with HIV/Aids or some new mutating sexually transmitted disease"-

Black Women & Herpes!!!

Black Women Spread AIDS!!!

AIDS & Blacks

Black women & AIDS

Not that's anything to be all schadenfreude over, but you need to get a reality check and some perspective how things are really going down...
86
I thought he came out like ten years ago.
87

If you were gay, Barbara, what kind of tree would you be? A weeping pussy willow?
Barbara must feel vindicated that at long last her nosy question to Ricky Martin has been answered; to which he should have replied "Why do you want to know?"
Who will ask Barbara about her own genetic labial lisp?
Who will next ask Johnny Weir if he's gay?
Who will next ask Barack Obama if he's half black?

89
I'm new to Dan's column/blog - is 42 real? Can anyone really be that clueless?
90
@gttim and kim in portland - Thanks! Everything went well with those three friends. They're still like family to me regardless of my sexuality. I was actually shocked that it went so well. :-)

Please wait...
