And?

2
So?
3
Yeah, ditto - what's your point?
4
wow...i'm so sick of this "controversy"...meanwhile the 520 bridge debacle is barely getting mentioned on here and it's a helluva lot worse for Seattle that this stupid museum.
5
man, can we tie this around tim burgess' neck and sink him with it? i always knew he was a (not-so) closet republican
6
What's with the odd dollar amounts to varios state republican parties? I've seen that with other donors
7
Build it in Bellevue.
8
Duh - Burgess and Licata are Seattle's versions of Republicans.
9
...seriously, I don't get all the uproar. You guys Reeeeaallly don't want this museum do you? How many times have you bumped this non-story? I'm generally on board with most of the issues brought up on the Slog, but I just don't get this one.
10
Baconcat disagrees.

This controversy is OVER.
11
That wasn't even a decent attempt at trying to manufacture controversy. Try again.
12
You keep talking about a private museum on public land. Well the Space Needle is a private entity, always has been. Why aren't you up in arms about that?
13
Stranger, get off your fucking high horse. I could give a shit about who the Wrights support politically. We get it, the Wrights are Satan incarnate. Please, something else.
14
Awww so butthurt over a little museum. Please, post about it some more.
15
agree - its getting fucking old.

don't you have anything else to report on?

NEXT!
16
Holy Shit Dom, you're kidding right? This is such bullshit. First, the dude's FAMILY is GIVING MILLIONS to this project. To a City that is BROKE.

And you actually think that because he disagrees with you (and me btw) on politics that's somehow a reason against the project. I can't even express how completely idiotic this reasoning is.

Your salary is partly paid by MANY Republican owned businesses. You have no problem taking their money, but somehow you're arguing they shouldn't be allowed to make money? I swear, this argument makes me feel like I'm reading the Evergreen College newspaper.
17
How would the Space Needle--those who own and operate it--profit any more or less if it's a Chihuly museum, or a non-Chihuly museum, or an open space with an occasional concert or an open air food court???
18
It's odd how all these people who appear to have never before commented on Slog have suddenly emerged en masse to defend their beloved Glasstrodome. If the story is so insignificant, why are they tripping over each other to trivialize it?

On an unrelated note, I can think of no more clear proof of the corruption inherent in the current system of funding political campaigns than the fact that wealthy donors often give to both major candidates in an election.
19
The public is being asked to give up public space for a private enterprise. It makes sense to find out who this for-profit enterprise would benefit.
20
Just wait till you see who the McCaw Family supports politically. Are you going to stop seeing the Nutcracker, the Ring, PNB, and anything THERE? They gave MILLIONS to have that name on the door. OMG. Well? you ready to never attend another event there? WHAT KINDA politics do you support for gosh sakes.

OH DEAR... wait till you see who paid for the Fountain...
21
@ 4 - Or, oh God, I don't know, how about the SOUTH PARK BRIDGE????!?!?!???!!!??!?

You know, the 80-something year-old drawbridge over the Duwamish that's used by over 20,000 cars and trucks daily? The one that's going to be STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION FOR FIVE FUCKING YEARS come June 30th, because it's crumbling and there's no money to fix or replace it?? The one that the politicos have been wrangling over for literally decades: 'You fix it' 'No, YOU fix it, it's in your county' 'Hunh-UNH, no it isn't, not after we moved the County Line!' etc etc ETC! (That's why that bar down there was CALLED The County Line, to commemorate all the legal bullshit contortions that the politicians went through.)

How about we get some coverage of this slow-rolling trainwreck of a decision? How about a nice big investigatory piece about how liberal progressive enlightened Seattle is about to stand by and WATCH as a poorer browner neighborhood is about to chopped off at the knees for FIVE FUCKING YEARS as their one lifeline is cut right off? Is that a worthy topic for The Stranger, maybe?

/end rant
22
HAVE YOU SEEN WHO CONTRIBUTES TO SAM? OMG!!! THERE ARE FOLKS WHO SUPPORT THE GOP!!! I SAY WE BURN THE MUSEUM DOWN AND START OVER...

GEEZ did you see who CONTRIBUTED TO BUILD THE NEW LIBRARY!!! OMG OMG...

DID YOU see that Phil Smart supports schools and he sells cars that were once built by NAZIS!!! OMG OMG...
23
@19 - Dom, what Public Space is Seattle being asked to give up? The arcade at Seattle Center? It's a privately run for profit space I believe, right? As is the adjoining space with kiddie rides. We're actually going to take space that has been privately run since 1962 and change if from a lame arcade and kiddie rides to a really nice glass museum, paid for by someone else.

Dom, I love your work on local politics usually. And definitely on the initiatives in the last election. But this obsession with Seattle Center is poorly reasoned and squishy at best on the facts, if not just blatant misinfo.
24
Don't listen to the haters, Dom. This stuff with the city center is all of our stuff, and it's a decision that should be made by all citizens, not a handful of wealthy republicans.

Read republicans as not in touch with want Seattle wants, not as party hate. Yeah, there are a lot of yuppies in Seattle who don't want this overhiped art. But that's Seattle. Welcome to Seattle.

On another note, the bridges could use more coverage.
25
@18 Poking holes in the idiotic argument against the museum does not implicitly imply support for said museum. If anything, this article is representative of the Strangers slow descent into mediocrity brought on by the exodus of more talented staff.

Also, big business has been giving cash to both parties simultaneously since the birth of the republic. You can Google it or what ever it is the hell you kids do these days.
26
Remember, if you can't externalize risk and privatize profit, you're not doing it right, in the Socialist Republican mindset.

But, yeah, the bridges are important.
27
Gotta chime in on this one, agreed that Wright's politics have nothing to do with this. I'm no fan of the Republican party, but come on.

I was hired to DJ at Jeff Wright's birthday party a couple of years ago. He was a friendly man with a lovely home. Not a word was uttered about the highly visible anti-Bush stickers on my record crates.

The catering was sublime. Excellent wine. Jeff Wright is not a bad dancer. And, 10% of my fee went to the Democratic Party, so I guess dude also contributes to them.
28
great story dominic, keep it up!

no way we're going to let him grab public land to make $$$$$$$$$$$ to give to fucking republicans.

what a douchebag, they're always against socialism except in order to line their own pocket$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Hey, if their conations are free $speech, then our enabling their profit$ is u$ engaging in free $peech, it'$ like $aying $eattle $upporrt$ Republican$ to be for the chihuly mu$eum.
29
Dominic dear.

your "this (or that...) guy donates to Republicans and so, prima facie, is a doodoo head beyond the pale" is sooo junior high school.

please grow up.

Seattle pretends to aspire to be a Worlds Class City, or even a major American city, and yet it is a place where being a Republican is a Capital Crime?

bush league.

do yourself a huge favor.

never, never, ever again cite someone's ties to any Republican/Conservative cause as if it were a crime.

K?
30
19 btw
go shave and comb your hair and take another picture.
grunge is so last millennium....
31
Speaking of astroturfing, this here newspaper seems to be trying pretty hard to manufacture their own particular flavor of public outcry. And they don't seem to be getting many nibbles.

NEW TOPIC PLEEZ.
32
Keep hammering until the museum thing is resolved, but I gotta admit, even I could care less if the Wrights are Republican (it's hardly a surprise; the majority of the wealthy historically are).

It's all the other factors of this that stink of shit. Short notice, carpet bagging, implications of paid-for support that you reported from that Facebook group, stacked decks, the sacrifice of public land for a project that the majority of people with no connection to the project and the Wrights are overwhelmingly against.

I don't even have a problem if something else private goes in the Fun Forest space, although it would be nice if it became permanently open. As long as it's all 100% on the up and up, and we, you know, support it, it's fine if something else private goes in.
33
Is there really nothing else of interest to cover? This and Slog's obsession with Rob McKenna's stupid lawsuit has made for a BORING two weeks. NEXT TOPIC!
35
This is perfectly consistent with the Republican philosophy of taking as much public money as possible to fund their own for-profit ventures. Cry about "Socialism!" when some working class slob gets a dime but pocket a dollar for yourself any chance you get, and cry like a little bitch every time tax season rolls around.

That's why this is significant, haters. Because it's fucking typical of the moneybags set to push this kind of stupid vanity project on people and pretend it's some kind of altruistic act when in fact it's a land grab. Rest assured when the money's counted these folks will come out ahead on this deal and the public will wonder where the money went.
36
"The public is being asked to give up public space for a private enterprise."

Bullshit. The Fun Forest is a private business. Did you check on its owners' politics?

BTW the museum will be leasing the land...it's not free so stop that bullshit too.
37
Dom I Agee 100% with you bro this la some l33t
38
@18, people who are not normally Stranger readers are coming on line en masse because the Stranger is trying to hype up a witch hunt for bullshit reasons. It's not insignificant at all; it's irresponsible writing and it creates a vicious cycle of blog mobs who are hell bent on taking down their stupid misconception of "the man."
39
you know, of all the City Council members I emailed, only Councilmember Burgess sent me a reply today.

Hmmm.
40
Talk about Manufacturing Dissent....
41
Every penny you spend at any business that advertises in The Stranger goes to support the war in Iraq because, you know, Dan Savage supported the war in Iraq.
42
I've changed my mind on this museum: I am now all for it, as long as it is adjacent to the "Twin Peaks" cafe, the "Northern Exposure" gift shop, the "Singles" Record store, and the "Sleepless in Seattle" Antique mall.

Let's place all our outdated, last gasp, beat-the-dead-horse commercial enterprises-masquerading-as-art in the same sad strip mall. It will give the Center House something to commiserate with.

Seriously: Does anyone really think that even the tourists will be even remotely interested in this outdated kitsch? If we want to make money, why not invest in something relevant?

43
@42 - because "we", as in the City of Seattle, are broke. So "we" have a choice - get a pretty nice but admittedly commercial $15 million glass 'art' museum that attracts people to the Center year round, is paid for by a wealthy family, and pays rent to the City (unlike the current tenants who are past due), or get a little open space around a tourist attraction (the space needle), that will cost the City money to build and maintain, money the City doesn't have (we are $50 million in debt).

Unless you happen to have several million dollars to build something at the Center.

If I had $15 million to invest in the Center, I personally wouldn't spend it on a Chihuly museum. But then, I don't. The Wright's do, and they are willing to invest it into a space that is now little used, and is operating at a loss. It's a space that looks like crap, and has been privately run since 1962.

In addition to the museum, there will also be a large art garden, guaranteed to be far nicer than the treed open space the City would go into debt developing.

I'd rather see the City use the money that would come in because of this museum and pay down debt so in the future we have more money to invest in human services we desperately need. Of course, Dom, maybe you want the City to spend more money on grass for tourists, grass that I bet you'll never actually use.
44
The 'footprint' of the Fun Forest building is too large. It cuts off east/west views and access. Yet, the Wrights propose enlarging the building, further hampering access. I suppose it makes sense in a business sense. Discourage people from enjoying historic park space and they'll be attacted to crass commercial attractions like the Space Needle and this pricey attaction.

Reduce the building footprint, build up 3 stories, put the gallery on the Top Floor. On the 2nd, 1st and basement floors, you name it -- shops, cafes, food court, kids video game hall, etc. There's no great loss replacing the stinking asphalt. But, the old building should go, entirely. It's too big. It creates a dead zone between it and Center House. A tall building would offer great views in all directions. Put in a Bubbleator along with regular elevators. Could there be anything stupider than 'sprawling out' instead of 'building up' in this instance? The Seattle high arts community is insane. Of course, its leaders are republican!
45
Dave, thank you for being the lone voice of reason on this issue.

Seriously.
46
I despise Fox News more than generic Republicans. Fox uses its media to hyperventilate and obsess on issues they have a bias for and interest in. Actively and cynically disguising their "news" programming from their "opinion" programming. Not only giving free media coverage to their favored agitators (the Tea Party Movement), but actively assisting them organize.

What I see the Stranger doing on this issue is no different.
Its bad when Fox does it, and its bad when my local paper does it.

I support the Chihuly exhibit proposal. I think there can be a good debate on the subject.

Going after the Wright family for their political donations serves no purpose other than to feed the pre-determined narrative. "Evil corporations stealing public land for evil purposes". Is that the best investigative reporting you can do?
47
So, 43, just because some rich people want to prop up their fading art pet, we should let them put up something that - once again - we have no proof people want to visit?

By that logic, if some rich kook wanted to put up a museum displaying their late mother's housecoats - because after all, everyone knew she had the prettiest housecoats - we should do it?

This is simply a vanity project showcasing a form of art that is now most regularly seen in lobby's of office buildings that are desperately in need of renovation. The money is there, but I don't see the appeal. Who needs another EMP?
48
The Stranger's lack of objectively on this issue knows no bounds - but, hey, how come you sent your supposed reporter to testify at the Public Meeting last night?

What kind of reporter testifies at the hearing he/she is supposed to be covering?

Cienna made it very clear that the Stranger was going after this project at all costs, damn the facts. The stupid crap you are trying to dig up and the spin you are putting on things proves it.
49
Holden has the same grasp of journalism as Erica did of wine bottles.....
50
"crass commercial attractions like the Space Needle"

Bingo! this is why you folks will lose this battle, you are completely off the fucking rails.

Seriously, coffee shop Marxists. Simply pathetic.
51
Coffee shop Marxist? Does that mean I have to grow a beard?

I'm not against commercial development. I just wonder if anyone will want to visit this thing. If not, I want to *make sure* that the lease is written so that they pay the full rent - no corporate welfare if it turns out that no one remembers who Dale Chihuly is.

52
@51, that seems perfectly reasonable. Regardless of how popular a living artist is now, it's nearly impossible to forecast their ongoing success. The attendance numbers are impressive, but there's a reason most single-artist museums feature those who have been of interest for longer periods of time. Even the museums of more safely established artists can suffer financial hardship. The Rodin museum in Philadelphia is beautiful, but the lower level screams for renovation.

If you grow a beard to become a proper coffee shop Marxist, perhaps you should add one to the mannequin in your avatar?
53
The Stranger is a for-profit entity owned by Tim Keck, the cheapjack publisher.

Many of its newspaper boxes are on public land. Start paying rent to the City, you fucking squatters, or we'll start pissing in them
54
mannequin?
I've been crushing on a mannequin?
55
gg
56
@16, 23, 43 -- Meinert, you just bought a restaurant and bar three blocks from this proposed new tourist attraction. So you have a financial stake in this. Love having your opinion in the mix here, but the vast majority of people are against this thing and no amount of trashing Dom is going to get us to stop writing about this.
57
Jeff Wright's wife, Korynne, is on the board of Seattle Center Foundation, an organization that is headed by a Seattle Center employee (making 6 figures) and is the channel for private contributions to Seattle Center. Rumored also to be a channel for other monies as well...

58
@6: Sorry it took 51 comments to respond to your question. The odd numbered amounts to various state committees generally mean that the rich person in question has donated to a national PAC (a typical name: Republican Victory Fund 2004) and the money has been redistributed to the state committees. Be careful when adding up your total donations from the FEC website that you don't double-count the original donation AND the subsequent redistribution of funds.
59
@56, please define "vast majority" and provide some independent verification of that definition - i.e. polls (not your Slog poll, please), meeting attendance, letters to the City Council. Thank you.

And if you're referring to the 5 Point as Meinert's "financial stake", I can't imagine a less likely place for Chihuly-loving tourists and yuppies to end up. This supposed financial stake is a red herring.
60
Haha. Yeeeaahh jeff (the post before me). The stranger is a bunch of biased paper pushers who think they are activasts. Your allowed to be politically affiliated with anyone you want last time I checked. Donating money is not a crime.

Please wait...
