whlie all true, she's solidifying a base and garnering millions in her media career, thus she is succeeding in what she wanted to do. she's also authentic in a way that a gregoire, napolitano, or granholm are not. she's hte modern bilbo. maybe she will even win the presidential nomination. 43% of republican vote, being the only woman, and running against hypocrites like romney, or blobs like huckabee?

man, she on fire.

and yes, this means we'll kick her ass in the presidential election. but hey, maybe she'll end up running about 3 times, she's pretty young and she seems to have mastered the media game. she'll be able to sell another book after running and losing the presidency and then her book contract might be worth $15 million. you don't need a majority of people to like you to be a "success" as a politician, you only need to be yourself and to have some people like you. She succeeds.

And I have to say, why don't we have someone so charismatic? Gregoire a great lawyer who sued tobacco can't even seem to get on the short list for the new supreme court spot. i mean really, wtf? Granholm and Napolitano get mentioned, but not Gregoire who got on time mag. cover for kicking big tobacco around?

do our chix just lack ambition?

Err, perhaps I can explain the "Haven't Heard Enough" column. Until recently my mother, a devout luddite, only had basic (non-cable broadcast) TV until the big switch over to digital. Now she has access to Faux News, she has had more than enough exposure to right wing nuttery. Previously, the worse excessive were never reported by our local TV stations or newspapers, indeed they went out of their way to white wash, edit, and spin any Republican misdeeds as "All Those Goddamn Gawdless Liberal's Fault". The worst of Palin's idiocy and bigotry never made it on the air. As a lifelong, ardent Hippie Feminist she knew Republicans were unpleasant, but had no access to information as to just how vile the breed is. Especially since the local cable company threw in broad band internet with the cable access.

Sorry, the last bit doesn't make any sense. I meant to say she now has access to more news now that she has access to more news channels and the internet.
4
"she's also authentic in a way that a gregoire, napolitano, or granholm are not."

What's authentic about someone who's in it only for the money, but won't admit that, less she cut into her earnings potential (like Colin Powell did when he published his book, then said he wasn't running.) There is nothing at all authentic about Palin.
5
As someone who has spent a lot of my career in female dominated offices, working in a lot of traditionally "female" roles (Secretary, receptionist, etc) I can totally understand why women - and especially working women - would have such a low opinion of her: She's like the snarky HR Manager who likes to engage in superficial "girl talk", and tries to tell them that she was "one of them", but would stab you in the back at the first opportunity. Women can see through that stuff, and most of them never forgive another woman who treats them that way.

Even my 85 year old mother, who had a long career as a bridge playing matron and lady who lunched (although she was a Rosie during WWII, and marched in the 1947 Bell System strike) has despised Palin from the first moment she walked on stage at the RNC.

As far as men go, a lot of them just want to fantasize about her, but the longer she goes on, with that horrid shrill voice and mean-spirited humor, the more she'll start to remind them of bitchy, back-stabbing women they've known.

Palin is authentic because she speaks from her emotional center, truly believes what she says, and connects. She was also fairly open about her pecuniary motives as she said the lawyer bill were wrecking her family and she' didn't need to be gov. to have the limelight and would pursue book and media things. That's pretty open about being after money AND fame and power. This is also authentic in that it's consistent with her republican view that money, and rightness, sort of go together. There is a consistency here that's lacking in an al gore approach of being all green yet living in a wasteful mansion. she wants everyone to be a greedy fuck, like she is, he wants everyone to huddle in the dark, unlike him!

I see that you're not trying to convince me that Gregoire, Napolitano and Granholm are exciting or vibrant of have a national base at all, thus QED my point is confirmed.

It's as if it's part of the liberal belief system that to be a public leader you have to be a dour donkeywonk at all times. No fun!

Why can't we have someone like that women's right chick on the West Wing who was going out with Josh? Someone who's fun and who speaks right out. A bit of charisma. Too much to ask, I see it's threatening on some level.

I loved seeing Tina Fey back on SNL last night and the sketch with her as Palin was very funny, but I didn't think she looked and sounded like Palin as much as she did during her appearances in the fall of 2008, when she was dead-on.

And, hey, how many Americans heard Newt Gingrich describe Sarah Palin as a "feminist icon" on CNN the other day?

I wouldn't call her a feminist icon, but feminism was supposed to be, and should be, about women having the opportunity to pursue whatever they want in life. I don't agree with Palin's opinions or politics but she doesn't have to be a lefty to be a feminist.
9
I dreamt Tina Fey bought the Rat City Rollergirls and there was an ad for "tall women" but I didn't want to be a Rollergirl so got to be her personal assistant instead. Some dumb jock who I guess took a recreational drug and was in the wrong house came up to me and was telling me some sob story thinking I was his coach. "I got blue balls, coach. You understand, right? You had blue balls back in the day?" "Boy were THOSE the days!" I crack, and the meathead hadn't figured it out. Tina's husband however was in fetal position on his bed struggling so hard not to laugh.

@8 "I wouldn't call her a feminist icon, but feminism was supposed to be, and should be, about women having the opportunity to pursue whatever they want in life. I don't agree with Palin's opinions or politics but she doesn't have to be a lefty to be a feminist."

Of course not. No one is saying that. But you do have to avoid things like making women pay for their own rape kits if you want to be considered a feminist. A feminist icon is not as simple as a woman in power; a lot depends on how said woman influences the rights of other women, and Palin reinforces patriarchal systems for everyone but herself.
11
I suspect that some people don't get their news from TV, and so haven't "heard enough" about her because she is really only a big deal in that medium.
12

What's hilarious is that you failed to create a Bogeywoman out of Sarah, and then you complain publication about your own shortcomings!

"Why aren't they hating her, when I spent a whole year smearing her...waaaaaaaah"
13
Her oldest daughter is hot as fuck, I want Momma Barracuda to walk in when I'm titty fucking her.
14
If she's a feminist than she has been able to do the things she's done thanks to liberals. If her fans had their way she'd be one leg out of burqa. As for icon, I'd say she's as much an icon for quitters and losers than anything else. And as they say in Texas, she's all hat and no saddle.
15
@9:I'm in a fetal position trying hard not to laugh about your dream.

Well, ok, I'm laughing.
16
@7 Maybe this is Palin's real gift: to get people to see something in her she doesn't even pretend to be?

"Palin is authentic because she speaks from her emotional center, truly believes what she says, and connects."

No, she is a political grifter who latched onto a specific persona she portrays in public, then waits for people like you to fall over backwards in orgasm. She's in it for the money, has a political shtick she uses to make that money, and laughs all the way to the bank while people like you throw hearts and flowers.

BTW, I don't know how Napalitano or Granholm would do nationally, but you're point about being dour underscores the main reason why Palin is successful. Republicans only want beauty queen types running for office, otherwise they couldn't care less. Big hair, big makeup. Look at the obsession with Hillary's looks all those years. If Palin fell into the dour class of women only Liberals seem to attract (according to you), she could be as authentic as apple pie, and it wouldn't matter one bit to conservatives.
17
Palin is an incredibly dangerous person for women, and anyone else who doesn't share her evangelical views. She rallies people on hate and fear and it catches like wild fire.

Democrats do have bad-ass chicks, but they are busy getting health care passed or being the Secretary of State.
18
14

That's not what they say in Texas.

Dumbass.
19
17
You misunderstood.
No one was talking about Fat-ass chicks...
20
The day that Newt Gingrich becomes the arbiter of feminism is the day the Saudi moral police design the Paris spring fashions. Dude, during the last campaign she said she didn't want to be labelled a feminist!
21
16

Beauty is only skin deep but Dour goes all the way to the bone.

The problem with the Democrat women you cite is not that they are too authentic.

They are humorless stodgy unimaginative uninspiring cows.

Martha Croakley is the poster troll for the genre...

Democratic women politicians are epic fails for the same reason Liberal Talk radio was such a spectacular flop.
22
@8: "feminism was supposed to be, and should be, about women having the opportunity to pursue whatever they want in life".

Wrong. Feminism is about bringing an end to patriarchal thinking, traditions, and laws. By your definition, Phyllis Schlafly is a feminist because she is doing what she wants, even if that means campaigning to restore women to their traditional, subservient cultural roles. And your claim that a woman "doesn't have to be a lefty to be a feminist" is not quite right, either. Feminism is inherently about social change and defiance of traditional structures that privilege men -- the church, the 50's-style nuclear family -- that conservatism, by definition, supports. If you're saying that a feminist might have conservative views about some things, then I agree with you, but her feminist views are inherently progressive, "lefty" views.
23
Liberal Talk Radio, despite corporate monopolies of radio stations, is doing very well for itself.

I would like to see Limbaugh, et all, trying to compete in an environment where stations actually aired what local markets wanted to hear. They'd be on a handful of low-power daylight stations in the south and the great plains.
24
I really can't understand how Palin could be considered "authentic". She's an opportunist and a hypocrite and never follows through on her commitments. She's a secessionist who claims the title of "Real American". She's the worst mother in the world who uses her children as sanctimonious props and human shields, condemning the rest of us for our so-called lack of "family values". She's a "pitbull" who can't take any criticism without getting all victimy about it. She talks shit about people with much more experience, expertise, credibility, influence and power than her; her mouth is constantly writing checks her ass can't cash. She abandoned her home state the minute she got a good whiff of that New York cash, and now she's earning her living as a bloviating coastal media elite celebrity wearing expensive designer clothes that someone else paid for.
25
@24: And she couldn't even serve out a single term as governor of the second-least populous state. And she's probably going to run for the presidency of the whole damn Union in two years.
26
Wait, I get it now! "Charisma" and "authentic" mean "I wish I could fuck them." Ok, now it makes sense.
27
I would cut off my arm if it'd convince her to run. Seriously, if she runs, Obama will make her WISH she were McCain. Imagine: "Next up on CBS, a special presentation of the Obama-Palin Presidential Debate!"
28
Should I release the sex tape of me fucking Todd Palin yet?
29
Nailin' the Secessionist? It might get a few hits on the interwebs.

How was the view? Could you see Russia?
30
What is scarier than sarah palin is that glenn beck pulls in 3.65 million viewers.
WTF?
Your country is full of crazy people.
How did you get to rule the world?
Can China be our new overlords? At least they stomp out their crazy cults...
Nooo, okay I'm joking. How bout Sweden! No one can argue with them! Everyone wishes they were Swedish. Or at least fucking Alexander Skarsgard.
31
Women can see through that stuff, and most of them never forgive another woman who treats them that way.

I firmly believe that most men who claim that women are extremely cruel to each other are actually seeing this dynamic. Nominally attractive bitches like Sarah Palin are very good at blowing smoke up men's asses while backstabbing other women with glee. When those women get fed up and blackball her, the men can't figure out what's going on, so they conclude women must be cruel, especially to "beautiful" women.
32
Also, the men who love her are the same men who are threatened by women. Palin is stupid enough to not be a threat to them.

Please wait...
