1
the show is about as emotionally mature as a baby but the songs are still fun.
2
Don't get it either.... just like you are the only fag who hates Glee, I'm the only theatre-dork who hates it. Half my Facebook friends want for me to vote for them to appear on the damn show. *Sigh*
3
What a change, Westlake filled with middle class white people with too much time on their hands.
4
Wow! That took some doin'! Congrats again, Bobby (and everyone else)!
5
...Isn't posting this on Slog just giving them more undeserved publicity?
6
oh stop the hating.

By the way, Kick-Ass is fun too.
7
Uhhh I never enjoyed any aspect of high school to want to see any tv show related in anyway to a high school experience.

Some people either have deluded themselves about how "fun" high school was or they were the very people that helped make high school a fucking shithole for the rest of us.
8
The only thing more annoying is some 30 something bitching about how high school was terrible. Shut up already
9
I would like to echo #7's sentiment; the rather continuous effects of misery and humiliation which occurred, primarily, in High School, bludgeoned me with rather serious issues of, specifically, social anxiety which threatened nearly to destroy my academic career in college (and far more of my future thereafter if it had succeeded).

I certainly wouldn't be perturbed if, one day, the place that was my high school turned instantly to dust.
10
I'm not watching Glee either--just not my cup of tea.

I give them credit for getting so many people to play along. Though maybe they got too many? The vast majority of the people there seemed to be in on the joke. The best part of these things for me is the reaction from the unrelated observers. Maybe they just didn't capture the reactions on tape.

@8

At no point were you ever compelled to read Dan Savage's blog, so "shut up already" with your top-heavy internet-board-warrioring.
12
That I enjoy Glee more than I ever did a Greek Active production does not speak well of me, I know.
13
@8, I'd comment but since you aren't a valued memeber of Slog (you haven't bothered to register) I'll treat your comment like I would my morning bowel movement; flush you down the toilet with the rest of the shit.
14
I'll give them kudos for dancing in the street but I'm still not interested in Glee. Watched it a few times and just wasn't my cup of tea.
15
Glee is fun, you guys are grumps.
16
I have no interest in flash mobs, but Glee is a terrific show, and the recent season opener was the best ever. It doesn't have FUCK ALL to do with how much fun or torment you had or endured in high school. I mean, seriously? Did you not get along with the cheerleaders? Aw. Then watch this show, fool.

What it's about over-the-top craziness, singin' and dancin', and the best, sharpest writing since "Arrested Development". The Sue Lyon character herself (the great, great Jane Lynch, who is by a wide margin the best actor on TV today) is worth the price of admission alone -- she is the greatest TV villain since The Joker on "Batman" (not the lame movie versions). This week she dropped a roofie in the principal's drink, took him to bed, and then used the photographs to bribe him into reinstating her as cheerleader instructor. "Just bringin' a mocha for my maharishi", she says (he's Indian). Seriously: this is FANTASTIC STUFF.

"There was a mouse in mine".

Jeez Dan. A bunch of people dancing in the streets and young men who can do standing summersaults - and your response is to moan about it - on your heavily-trafficed blog using what I assume was the WiFi connection in first-class?

Anyway - we all have our troubles. And from the onedegreeevents.com site I can see that you'll have another chance to moan about this at PrideFest:

18
So that's what all those harassing FaceBook recruiting messages to me were about. Glad I chose not to humiliate myself. Lame...

19
"did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks?"

"what, are you gay? most of the show choir directors i make out with are gay."

soooooo good. and i agree with fnarf. you don't need to have great memories from high school in order to enjoy the show. i'm not a giant cop-enthusiast but the law&order franchise still is quite entertaining from time to time.
20
flash mobs are almost as stupid as twitter. Just a bunch of people with too much time and a desperate need for attention.
21
I knew a girl so gloomy she wouldn't laugh or sing, she wouldn't listen to me - Now she's a mean old thang - So spread sunshine all over the place just sit on a happy face - You old bitchy fag!!!
22
Flash mob to promote a tv show?

I think it's safe to say that flash mobs have jumped the shark.
23
@22 -- Flash mobs jumped the shark forever when they used one to promote Oprah *and* the Black Eyed Peas in Chicago last Fall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CttB6FmMg…
24
The guy running the event...Egan Orion is pretty slimy...wouldn't go near one of his events with my 10" pole!
25
I'm embarrassed for everyone I know who admits to liking this show. I watched about 2 episodes and the impression I got was that it was The O.C. meets High School Musical, and those are two of the biggest pop-culture pieces of shit of the last 10 years.

@16 Really, the "best, sharpest writing" since Arrested Development!? You need to watch more (and better) TV shows.
26
@21 I think I'm in love with you.
27
T: Everyone you know should be embarrassed for knowing such a condescending jerk.
28
Perhaps that was a little harsh; I just find the being-embarrassed-for-other-people concept THE most egregiously self-righteous thing.
29
i loved it so much i cried. a little.
30
Wow. People having fun while others watch and have fun. I hate them like you do Dan. Stop it right now, smiling and laughing people. Stop having fun and enjoying yourself. You're slowing the contunious rot that grows inside us. Right Dan? Back me up here....
Rotting inside.
31
@25, I think you need to learn how to watch TV, period. Because you're not getting it, not even in the ballpark. It bears zero resemblance to either The OC or High School Musical. Maybe satire is too difficult for you?
32
Mark me down for "Fucking delighted by flashmobs, even if they are about teevee!"
33
It wasn't a TV promotion. It was organized by a local event promoter (and apparent Glee fan) for a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon. I'm sure the 1000 people that showed up to participate had WAY more important things to do, like sitting at home on a sunny afternoon, eating sour grapes and clacking away on their keyboards, instead of being out with their friends, meeting new people, doing something silly and fun just for the hell of it, and giving tons of passerby an impromptu show.

So Dan, you know, another approach to your post could be: "Gee, I'm not into Glee, but isn't it cool that we live in a city where people not only organize this type of stuff for a random bit of fun on a Saturday, but where HUNDREDS of people actually show up, just to take part for the fun of it?!" Sure beats living in a city where everyone sits at home, bitching on the Internet about how there's nothing to do, and how nothing ever happens, dontcha think? I mean, those hundreds of people showed up on a Saturday, learned a dance routine, and performed it downtown for the sheer fun of it. Give them some props. What were YOU doing on Saturday that was so great?

@24: I've know Egan for almost a decade. He's one of the least slimy people on the face of the Earth. That's a fact.
34
beyond gay.
35
...I guess it's better that the kids do this than, you know, hang out while up to no good.

But couldn't they use the original (way better) versions of these songs? Or are they so young they don't know the originals? I mean, Glee is clearly written by gay men Dan's age...so maybe the youngsters really don't realize these songs were famous before Glee?

I have watched about 6 episodes of Glee, and I am still on the fence. On the one hand, some of the writing is whip smart and hilarious, but all the characters we're supposed to care about are one-dimensional, the portrayal of high school is a fake version of fake movies from the 80's, some of the conflicts are cheaper and dumber than an afterschool special, and the portrayal of high school performances is ridiculous to the point of being insulting.

I cannot decide yet if I can overlook these glaring errors in order to really accept my love of the snarky dialogue and great songs. Really, Fnarf is right--the woman who is playing the cheerleading coach, as well as the principal and the chick from Pushing Daisies (who I hope comes back--I'm only 6 episodes in, remember!) are all bringing their A game.

And Fnarf, you rise high, high in my esteem for the shout out to Mark Hamill's Joker. That man has the best laugh in the business. I was a wee lass (well, middle school) when that show first aired, and it made me a DC girl for life.
"The time for sorrow has passed. It's time to look ahead, to a future filled with smiles. And I'll be smiling again, just as soon as we take that man there, slap him in that box THERE, and roll it into that vat of acid THERE!"
36
Wow! Why such animosity for the flashmob?!

I participated and had a great time! It was a blast to meet new people out at the practices, then wander the streets of the urban core as we made our way from location to location and performed. The performances were a blast. Two friends and I did it together. It was a great way for us to enjoy a beautiful Saturday. Egan, Bobby and Beth did a great job with the project and put on a fun time for everyone with their forethought and coordination. Nobody was hurt. There was no violence. The music was fun as can be for dancing. Bystanders were entertained. Ultimately I can't see any negatives to this flashmob.

Glee certainly didn't need the promotion, but what's wrong with having a bit of good, clean fun with 1,000 strangers on a beautiful Saturday?
37
I don't understand how this is a flash mob, this seems more like an artistic performance to promote a television show. Maybe I'm just bitter, because I'm not going to waste my time with another television show that really doesn't look entertaining to my tastes, but the flash mobs I've participated in had more interaction than just doing pre-choreographed dances they saw on the TV box. I'm sure though, this looked really neat to people wandering around downtown, and I think it's hilarious that more people came out for a television show than TEA protesters. If there's any good in this, it's that people are getting together to be happy with each other, and not sexist/racist/hatedagubment.
38
@35, Mark Hamill? I was talking about Cesar Romero.
39
Egan Orion is awesome- the only person who doesn't like him is a mean, old, ugly, toothless, drag queen here in Seattle who has been mercifully prevented from being involved in our Gay parades... Is that you @24 MF?
40
The team and I who produced the flash mob just wanted to do something fun. On the surface, it seems pointless, but you'd be amazed by the stories of how important this was to so many people, bring families and friends together, helping people move on from grief, fulfilling their bucket lists. We just did it for fun, but it's amazing what can happen when you bring together a 1000 people to do something absolutely absurd and totally fun.

@24 Sounds like you could really benefit from a flash mob! I could say much more, but you look so comfortable in your gutter, I didn't want to disturb you.

@33 Thanks. I know so many amazing people in Seattle, glad you're among them.

@39 Thanks for defending me, but just wanted to say for the record that the person you speak of is and always has been a friend of mine. Embarassing things happen to all of us from time to time, it's called life, and we all deal with it imperfectly. The person you speak of I know wouldn't talk about me that way.

Man, this blog is harsh! You people need more unicorns and lollipops in your lives and less idle time in front of the computer...fancy a flash mob?
41
@ #40

LMAO! You obviously don't know this person too well do you?

EVIL Incarnate!

Please wait...
