How come ya'll aren't covering i-1068? Not a challenge, just wondering. Do you know something we don't about its viability?

Damn, sorry to hear that. He was pretty sick the last few years I saw him at Hempfest.

/a toke in his honor

"Herer had a stoke several years ago..."

I assume you mean "stroke?"

...I suppose "toke" might also work. :P

R.I.P. Jack!

So sad...atleast his legacy will live on. Marijuana legalization is closer than ever!

The amazing thing about Jack is that while he had many bouts with poor health over the last 20 years (any one of which would have put even a strong man out to pasture indefinitely, if not permanently) Jack, much to my amazement, kept coming back. And back. And back. His vision and passion for -- dare I say, "our" -- cause sustained him in the face of adversity, and in the process inspired hundreds if not thousands of activists and volunteers during the darkest era in the war on drugs. I am grateful to have known him.

thanks for covering this, Dom. Jack Herer will be missed.

also, yeah, to re-iterate @1: whats up with I-1068?

I wrote about the initiative when it was filed. The campaign has very little money, according to state disclosure records, and doesn't have paid staff. Maybe they can make the ballot, but, without the sort of evidence that the folks behind it can gather 241,000 valid signatures (!!!), I don't have much to report.

For those of you who want to know where to sign the I-1068 petition, look here:

That's right, McGinn.

Get enough weak minded GenY's together and ply them with circuses so you can push through budget busting plans.

Yes, Chairman Mao, you can ford the Yang-tse -- with the aid of your frogmen!

I work in a dispensary and can tell you he will be greatly missed. He was a man as heady and energized as the Sativa strain that bears his name.

You see? Marijuana kills!

Whoa, there should be a name for this feeling, like deja vu, but specific to some old person's death. In other words, I could have SWORN he died about four years ago. This same exact thing happened when I found out that Charlie Daniels was still alive(!) Next thing you know they'll be telling me Sherri Lewis just died! Or John Holmes!

I ordered about 30 copies of his book to feature at a newly opened Barnes & Noble in Vermont, not realizing that it looked kind of like an anarchist's cookbook or Kinkos copies. Sold every copy! Later got to meet him (1993) at a rally in Burlington, VT. Nice guy, signed my copy. R.I.P. Jack!

The I-1068 campaign got 20% of its signature goal in the first quarter of the campaign! Sounds pretty viable to me -- there are PAID signature campaigns that would be envious of that kind of progress, especially considering it happened in the rainy/cold first month of the campaign.

Jack Herer, may we continue to HEAR the thunder of your voice calling us to action, to SMELL the heavenly aroma of the Cannabis Hemp Plant, to TASTE the lovely fruits of hemp foods that are so healthy for us, to FEEL the luscious touch of hemp clothing against our bodies and to SEE Cannabis Hemp legalized and respected ,as it once was in the past! You brought us all so much knowledge about Hemp, that was hidden from us for decades! Thank you for not giving up, when people didn't, at first, believe you. You told me that everyone even laughed at you, thought you were a "crazy loon" and wouldn't even read your book. You walked Venice Beach and talked to every person who would listen to you about Hemp. You walked your talk and talked your walk until "THEY", finally, believed you! The truth came to light, as it always does! I have found COURAGE & FREEDOM with your words of advice and wisdom! I miss your beaming smile that always lit up when you were happy to see someone you loved, your strong but gentle hugs and your calls asking me "what are you doing, now?" For NOW is when we need to act to see the change we desire. What you brought to the WORLD was a gift of love and hope for a dying planet! Your Mom, I'm sure, is so proud of you (as we all are) and I know she is happy to have you with her, now! (You've always missed her, so!) Jack, I wish you sweet, sweet peace, dear heart, and may the rest of us aspire to continue what you have started!

Please wait...
