Since when do the DC police report directly to the White House?
I am all for these protests, the repeal of DADT, and equal rights for everyone, but I am not sure that the characterization of this as a "White House" anything is accurate.
I'm very happy for this. I admired the Choi-only chaining, and now we have a few more chainees. But they're all kind of plain, no? If this catches on I hope some hotties step up.
5 it's the pukey green in the fatigues. no human complexion will look good in that- more like a bloating hog carcass under florescent lights. the navy gal has it better- remember, geys, if you are a Winter be sure to join the Navy.....
I saw this an immediately wanted to donate some money to GetEqual. Fuck HRC, they don't do enough for the cause. However, GetEqual does not have a donate option on their website, so I bought a shirt instead.
The blond woman in the navy uniform is trangender activist Autumn Sandeen who blogs at Pams House Blend. I'm impressed that GetEQUAL included a transgender vet in the six. I think that some gay orgs would be afraid to add another issue into the mix...
Also - the police shutting down the park was ubercreepy. Was it all just to prevent the media from getting shots of soldiers chained to the fence or shots of soldiers being carted away by the paddywagon? We're getting to them allright. The police response today is a sure sign of it.
musing why we are willing to let police close public areas and kick out media...
Close the park to "preserve public order and safety," sure, but let the media oversee it all. All of it.
I think it's called "freedom."
@4 - Lafayette Park (part of the President's Park) is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Parks Police, which is part of the National Park Service at the U.S. Department of Interior, which is headed by Secretary Ken Salazar, who was appointed by President Obama. I like both guys generally, but this move came from the executive branch and not Metro PD. As a side note, in 2005, the Washington Post reported that Lafayette Park has the "densest squirrel population known to science." So, maybe it was a squirrel-related park closing...
Wow! That video made me feel pride and shame all at the same time! Proud of the chain-ees (ers?), proud of the media. Shame for the cowardly act on the part of the Park police via our President.
What we saw with the behavior of the park police was an act of tyranny.
They should keep him in jail, this is becoming a repeated offense and distraction in the Nation's Capitol. It's just a matter of time before choi ratchets it up more.
@ 28 Shorter LC: If you can't convince people to sign on to your abhorent political views, then just accuse your political oponents of fomenting murder! Gosh Loveschild, yer ever so smart & reasonable. Reading yer pithy comments is a constant delight.
i read a story earlier today that the army is all pissed off that 27% of 17-24 year olds are too fat to enlist and want to change school lunch because of it( i'm going to ignore the fact that what they REALLY mean is poor people who they usually cajole into joining are getting fatter because of shitty food/shitty school lunches, but i digress)
seems like letting in teh gays, a traditionally fitness minded bunch of guys and dolls, would solve everyone's problem and let us keep eating pizza 3 days a week in public school. everyone wins! (except the fat kids :( )
@31: What, the gay who wants to allow other gays to serve openly in the armed forces? Including highly trained personnel? Including a shit ton of military translators? He's the one endangering our soldiers?
Silly me; I'd always thought it was the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and other militants.
hey, i live in DC, my family has lived in DC for three generations, my dad works at a museum on lafayette park... i am TOTALLY pro gay rights and I think Choi's got the right idea chaining himself to the fence... BUT I have to say I kind of doubt this had anything to do with Obama and gay rights demonstrators/ Obama's feelings on gay rights, etc. I would at least take it with a big grain of salt.
It's hard to know what exactly the Secret Service is doing unless you know someone on the force. Since my dad is bff with like half of them I will definitely ask him later this evening. But please think of this: ALL IT WOULD TAKE IS ONE PHONE CALL/FAX/HINT/ETC. THAT CHOI WAS THINKING OF DOING SOMETHING MORE THAN DEMONSTRATING AND THE SECRET SERVICE HAS TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. Even if it was totally came from someone who does not like Obama or Choi.
Sorry to play devil's advocate but I like Dan Savage and I like the Secret Service and I generally like for all my friends to get along.

Surely it was the infringement of the first amendment's guaranteed freedom of the press by the POLICE that the poster @28 referred to as not American. Who would find someone with six years of field training, a true veteran of the Iraq conflict, and a West Point Graduate not American? But I'd hate to put as many words into someone else's mouth. It is well past time to review the national laws if the military will accept others we'd question - wife-beaters, convicted criminals, gang members, etc - but not a West Point Graduate whose only crime isn't even a crime. I know I'd rather the best of the best of the best leading my nation on the front lines.
Does anybody have pics of either the protests, some of the key soldiers that have been discharged (Choi, or pursued the Lesbian army soldier that had the movie made about her, or Riechen Lemukuh; (sp?) I'm doing an oral presentation this week 4 a class & need pics 2 highlight my paper pts, 1 being DADT!)
Make Obama the new LBJ.
Hound him.
All quiet on the MSM front.
Sorry, wish it were so.

I look forward to developments on this.
I bet the order came from Obama himself!
Everybody knows the appropriate way to fight for your rights is by attending $250 per plate HRC dinners. It worked for Rosa Parks!

Lets give them some money to keep bailing Dan Choi and the others out of jail.

Come out, come out, wherever you are!

now now-
that dog won't hunt, Bob.
Dan is proof that not all gays have fashion sense....
Not Autumn Sandman. Anything but that.
Yeah. Autumn is one exhibit of countless many others why transgenders make transsexual people extremely, extremely cranky.
so people can make videos of animals getting crushed because of the 1st ammendment
and people can bring ( oh, they're unloaded, well that makes it ok!) GUNS ONTO FEDERAL PROPERTY!!!!!!!!! because of the 1st ammendment
but these guys get kicked out??
how is the 1st ammendment working these days? does it only apply to jackasses? do the rest of us have to be polite?
America is laughing at us.

Why don't you tell us, Loveschild? Surely at this point you can no longer be afraid of exposing your ignorance.
Silly me; I'd always thought it was the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and other militants.
Now, where have I heard this before? Oh, that's right. Thanks, failing memory!
