I've no doubt there are plenty of other means for viewing this online *cough!*bittorrrent!*cough!*, so it's not like nobody is every going to see this again.
2
Yes, let's all thank the Vatican for free speech.
No! Free speech comes from the strength of our determination to be free. Something the throngs in Muslim countries long for. We cannot allow ourselves to be cowed. Or would we rather be left alone. Don't bother us and we won't say bad things about you and your religion.
3
Am I safe to assume that next week's Stranger cover will have an image of Mohammed?
4
@3 as was said yesterday, until there comes the week when all the major print media of the world, from the west to the east, all do that at once...
5
Let's just go ahead and treat a religion of huge internal diversity and complexity like a second-class religion because of the actions of extremists. I'd sincerely like you to respond Dan, as I'm going to assert that you have stepped out of your neat segments of mostly poised commentary and into a whole different game. A generalization like that in my mind is equally as inadmissible as any made against other groups. I'm not saying that extremism within islam is not vocal, nor is it not an alarming and dreadfully fascinating piece of the religion. But it fails miserably as descriptive of the beliefs or even sympathies of 1.5 billion (thinking, presumably) people.
6
CC is trying to keep Matt & Trey alive in the only way TV network weasels know how - folding immediately.
7
"Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah."

"You're only making it worse for yourself!"

"Making it worse? How can it be worse? JEHOVAH! JEHOVAH! JEHOVAH!"
8
Note to Islam: Dan Savage just implied that relative to you, the Catholic Church is a grown up religion.
9
ditto @5.

Leave the generalizations to Fox, Dan. Presumably you're reading Sullivan, so you must have seen this letter.
10
@5 well, until the rest of the 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide finally denounce the actions of this vocal "minority" I will continue to make generalizations about Muslims.
11
@10: There's plenty of moderate Islamic groups and organizations who routinely condemn this BS.
12
@10 "finally"? understand that these extremist groups are so small and cohesive (which makes them all the more effective) due to the constant self-selection that is a product of their complete rejection by the mainstream muslim world. the denunciation and isolation that is given to these groups is not effective at minimizing their impact, nor is it effective at changing the dangerous ideologies they abide by. it is a response that is in a large part political, much like distancing yourself from a former acquaintance after they have made political moves you (and your electorate) do not approve of. that being said, the muslim world has denounced and presumably will continue to denounce extremism. i'd post a link, but then it would look like you don't know how to use that one search site.
13
@5 When Muslims stop oppressing their women, killing their gays, and making death threats against those who insult their silly superstitions, then I might stop insulting them. Probably not though. I insult every religion as equally as I can. When Islam stops being the religion that makes the Catholic Church look progressive we'll talk.
14
Silly Danny Boy, it's simple-- the Sunni Extremists, are SOOOO pious and filled with Allah's love that if you make a joke: they kill you.

It's a tight rope to walk when religion is involved, most of of us non-believers or non-fundies get frustrated at having to lay the customer service lines on the die-hards "sure, we all believe what we believe..."

...but any logical person knows that despite the traditions and organizational headaches of big religions, they can and in fact do turn out some decent people. So why can't we all thumb our noses (in jest) once in awhile when they interpret literal truth in fable?

We're all grown-ups here, take a joke or don't..but kabloom-y? No. Fail.

PS- My fave espisode of ALL time is the ep about Jospeh Smith...dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumbbbbbbbbbbbbb!
15
The religions who generally don't threaten violence got that way because they must exist in pluralistic and secular democracies. Over the years secularism has had a civilizing influnce on religion.
16
this is a straight up picture of Mohommeds diiiick
8=====>

kill me bittchess
17
Please put Mo in a bear suit on the cover next week Dan.
That said I am sick that ONE group gets appeased by threats of violence...... then anyone who feels Muslims pose a threat to our civil liberties is called a bigot. It's like saying someone is sexist for noticing most rapists are men.
18
When Muslims stop oppressing their women, killing their gays, and making death threats against those who insult their silly superstitions, then I might stop insulting them.

My impression was that ib+ was not requesting that Dan stop insulting or discussing certain practices/beliefs, just that Dan acknowledge that it's not all Muslims, and that there are many on our side of this debate.. We acknowledge the difference between Pat Robertson and a lesbian Quaker in small town USA; why not acknowledge the intricacies and divisions among different flavors of Muslims?

Comedy Central gets the big "fail" stamp on this one. You give an extremist a cookie, and he's going to want a glass of milk.

Anal, your smithing is unparalleled.

Plaster this picture all over your local mosque

20
Actually, I think the lego picture should be next weeks Stranger cover art.
21
I'm going to have to agree with Pol Pot on this.
22
We need to talk about the fact that the KKK still exists although these days they are of a different religion and often (but not always) of a different race then the original. The original KKK killed Emit Till for whistling at a white woman the new KKK kills the infidel for dissing Mo'.
23
Having seen the episode, there's no way it was censored by Comedy Central or anyone else in reaction to anything. The joke ending, with its extended, bleeped out summations of the episode's preachy moral, followed by the kid's satisfied "yeah", was obviously always intended. Without Mohammed being bleeped and censored out the whole time, the juxtaposed outrages being committed by Jesus, Buddha, et all makes no comedic sense.

This whole "controversy" is obviously just a goofy marketing stunt. Kind of a lame episode full of retreads and old gags, too.
24
Okay lets try to offend everyone: Mohammed and Jesus walk into a bar.......
25
"Islam is never gonna be a great, big, all-grown-up-now world religion until it can learn to take a joke and tolerate a little blasphemy, just like all the other great, big, all-grown-up-now world religions"

Not tolerating blasphemy is right there in their holy book, Dan, they ain't allowed to backslide on that one. And for good reason. If they do all civilize themselves in this way, in direct opposition to their holy teachings, then either their will or their faith is weak. Or 3rd option, they're not idiots who've been brainwashed into thinking free inquiry is a societal evil.
26
@23--I'm glad that someone here agrees that the bleeping of Muhammad was part of the joke.

I thought it was a good joke, and the whole two-parter a pretty decent comedic take on "Extra-Special Epic Two-Part Anniversary Episodes of Long-Running Series."

It wasn't _quite_ up there with _Scott Tennorman Must Die_, _Super Best Friends_, or _Red Sleigh Down_. But it made me want to see all those again, which is what ESE2PAEoLRSs are supposed to do.
27

@25,

Not tolerating blasphemy is in the Bible too, and the Torah, but Jews and Christians do it all the time.
28
@24: ...where Moses and Siddhartha Gautama are doing body shots off of Kali...

Every group has their's. Evangelical Christians have the ever so charming: Lou Engle - A major figure in the New Apostolic Reformation with ties with the violent anti-abortion movement called The Army of God, and who's own movement also calls for acts of "martyrdom" -- meaning followers who are willing to commit violent acts, including murder, who will willingly go to prison or be shot down by police, so they can rid the world of the movement's "enemies," namely prominent abortionists and LGBT leaders; Scott Lively- professional gay-hater, holocaust revisionist, and recognized hate group leader from the US who traveled to Uganda to whip up anti-gay animus in the country, which has lead up to the "anti-homosexuality" bill.

Word is that the ever charming Mr. Engle will be heading to Uganda soon to work his magic at TheCall Uganda in early May. Perhaps, he'll share my favorite quote of his, "The most "dangerous terrorist" is not Islam but God. One of God's names is the avenger of blood. Have you worshipped that God yet." Uganda is ripe for him, they have started listing "Top Homos" in the paper: http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2009/04….

This stuff scares me more than anger over South Park.
30
@23/26 - I opined in Dan's first post on the topic that it was most likely an attempt at garnering publicity. However, if you look at the pic in Dan's link to Sullivan or go to south park studios, it was apparently Comedy Central's decision to bleep every mention of Das Prophet's name (as opposed to the long bleeps at the end when characters were discussing the moral of the show).

Of course, this "they censored us" claim could also be an attempt to manufacture some publicity.

I thought the episode was decent, but not as entertaining as their tackling of the censorship topic in the "Family Guy" send-up they did in Cartoon Wars.
31
fuck this medieval shit fuck all you medieval fuckers whatever faith or stupid premodern dumbshit you try to force out your butt faces
32
@25 In order to live in a free society we accept that people will say things that will piss us off. They have the right to do so without fear of violent repercussions. Muslims have the right to say "that is blasphemy and we are offended", not the right to say "you'll probably end up dead from this, and btw your address is now on our website for anyone who may or may not want to kill you, ttfn."

And yes christians do equally terrible things here, and guess what THATS JUST AS BAD AND DOESN'T EXCUSE THIS. Same bloody coin, doesn't matter if you look at it from a different side.
33
OK, we understand that there are crazy Muslims. But the demonization of the entire Muslim world only plays into the hands of both Muslim extremists and those from the US and other countries that champion empire and apartheid. As we sit here, the case is being made for there to be war with Iran. And there is no sincere push to end the unjust war in Iraq, or the murder of civilians in Afghanistan. Have we not learned anything in the US? What are the holier-than-thou readers doing to denounce the murders of Muslims by Western armies?!?

Dan - I am surprised you have taken such a simplistic tone on the subject and seem to be fine with this Us Vs. Them mentality. But if we are to take that line, I ask this - who has done more damage to whom? Muslim extremists to the "west" or Western extremists to the Muslim world?
34
From one atheist reader...Amen
35
@32
In order to live in a free society we accept that people will say things that will piss us off.
They have the right to do so without fear of violent repercussions.
Homosexuals have the right to say "we believe marriage is a civil right and we are offended", not the right to say "you'll probably end up fired for this, and btw your address is now on our website for anyone who may or may not want to CONFRONT you."
36
South park what have you done you have gone against everything you have made for the past 13 years freedom of speech and worse of all you draw the line for a Muslim the same people who attacked us and killed innocent people as a fan as an american and a patriot I'm ashamed of you. I own every season of south park and you do this! You either have two options here either replay the 201th episode and uncensor it or just quit all together because you have gone against everything you have worked for if this episode isn't replayed uncensored I will never watch south park again!
37
@36: Shouldn't you be posting your angry, incoherent, semi-xenophobic, and generally butthurt reply somewhere where the makers of South Park will see it? We here on SLOG are the ones being subjected to your BAWWWWWWW as it is now.
38
@ 23/26

From South Park Studios website (http://www.southparkstudios.com/news/387…

"A Statement from Matt and Trey

In the 14 years we've been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn't stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn't some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle's customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn't mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We'll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we'll see what happens to it. "
39
Holy scripture is totally unmoving. Referencing it is almost like saying "This is how it once was and this is how it shall stay."
Now, I agree with most of the morals in these sorts of books, for example, not killing people.
But sometimes the things written in there are admittedly backwards. That's where it gets tricky.

You can't just update holy text. It doesn't work that way. But you also can't do it like the catholic church, interpreting the bible to the point of corruption. I believe that the newest religion, science, holds the greatest hope for surviving in modern society. It is reasonable, progressive and fills it's followers with the fervor of religious zealots. However, instead of looking to hold one opinion and never letting go of it, they want to find new facts, invent new theories and cross out theories that make no sense. Geo-centrism anybody?

However, science is very cold and unforgiving, and tends to not deal with things people really care about, like where we go when we die. I think science can not and will not answer these questions for a very good reason. You need to find your own beliefs and believe in them. Finally, never settle on one truth. Like the ancient philosophers once believed, to find the truth you must first accept the fact that you do not know it.

Please wait...
