@4 Pitbulls aren't just big with idiot owners, they have been bred to be super aggressive and fight until they are dead (uh, as in a "pit," hence their name). We knew a vet who had to stitch up a Bull Terrier (the less aggressive cousin) in a situation where he had no anesthetic, and he said the Bull Terrier didn't even register pain...which is why they are so successful at fighting to the death in a pit with another Pitbull. Owning a Pitbull is like owning a tiger, and being surprised when it eats the baby.
I just don't understand what this has to do with anything. Pitbulls are really low on my list of dangerous societal menaces that warrant this kind of attention.
Anyone who denies that pit bulls are verifiably more dangerous than other dogs simply hasn't done any research. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and their mixes are responsible for 80% the attacks on people that result in bodily harm. They are responsible for 68% of attacks resulting in death. Pit Bull Terriers alone have seriously maimed over a thousand U.S. and Canadian citizens since 1982. "Even if the pit bull catergory was 'split three ways', attacks by Pit Bulls and their closest relatives would still outnumber attacks by any other breed". (via www.dogsbite.org)
and good quote from a study on dog bite statistics -via www.dogbitelaw.com: "[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF {Dog Bite Related Fatalities} in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities."
And when you look at the next dogs down on the list - the next dogs down, the dogs some would argue are just as likely to bit you but aren't publicized and 'vilified' like pit bulls - are Wolf Hybrids (are we surprised that they sometimes bite?) and Huskies... with aproximately 11 times less fatal attacks than the pit bull/rottweiler group.
@5: Traditional dogfighting (back when it was legal) is like boxing: It's blood sport, but not intentionally to the death. Dogs are expensive to breed and train, and burning through 1 dog/fight is not very cost effective. Consequently, pit bulls have traditionally been bred for very high aggressiveness toward other dogs, and very low aggressiveness toward humans - since if you don't want the dogs killing each other, that means someone has to jump into the ring and pull them apart. Aggression toward humans is not an inherent trait of the breed, but a result of mistreatment and bad breeding.
Pit bulls just are. They don't hide it, unless you make them wear stupid frilly pink sweaters and Hello Kitty hats.
Such nice dogs...
So DEADLY.
As far as I can tell, Pit Bulls have two things that make them dangerous: 1. They are larger dogs and 2. they attract the wrong type of owners.
Pit Bulls share both traits with several other breeds, such as Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, Boxers, etc.
I do wonder if Dan also is against banning bulldogs and terriers, since those are the breeds that are the "parents" of the modern pit bull terrier.

Ten most dangerous dog breeds (guess which is #!?)
