Cool. This means I might actually find a space there, instead of everyone parking there for seemingly days on end. I don't mind paying a buck or two if it means not circling the block for hours.

One of the fundamental rules of parking is setting the price so there's always one space, and only one space, available nearby.

How late are they going to run til? 6 PM, like most of the city, or 8 or even 10 like the spaces in other double-duty nightclub/residential districts like Fremont?

Honestly, let's start doing city-wide parking permits in residential neighborhoods, if we want to raise some revenue and push people to metro. A reasonable cost: look at how Boston does it, for example. This will also benefit home & condo sales and rentals at apartments with spaces offered to be more desirable for people that absolutely have to have a car.

Crap. I've somehow made it two years on the hill without buying a parking permit... but now it looks like it's time to get one.
4
Screw you Joe. I own a house that doesn't have a driveway.
5
Dom, I think I've read that Dan S. is also a non driver. What's you guys' real reason for not driving? I'm a 60 YO able bodied guy who's never had a license, other than a learner's permit, and don't miss it, most of the time. (In my 20s I lived on a completely urbanized 2mi X 4mi island with good public transportation, and I've always used bikes.) The biggest inconvenience is no picture ID.

By the way, Mr. Holden: This will affect the homeless population in the park a great deal. As I make it, you now favor:

carless city -- over
civil liberties -- over
homeless people -- over
downtown businesses -- over
Tim Burgess.

7
@2 Screw that. Why should I pay property taxes and pay to park my car near my property?

Precisely. Fnarf, you're sounding like Donald Shoup, author of a book with one of the greatest titles ever.

If you paint the solar panels on top reflective silver, they'll stop working.

... free parking ...
10
besides, I've got a free parking pass near the Egyptian for the whole film fest, and a bus pass, so ... don't drink and drive.
11
@9 If a pay station is not working that does NOT equal free parking. You should report the malfunctioning machine and park elsewhere. Or if there is another working pay station nearby (there probably will be) - walk down the block and get your parking sticker from that one.
12
@9: Besides being a chickenshit move, your plan will be a fail. These aren't parking meters. There's always another pay station nearby, and the parking enforcers only care if there's a sticker in your window.
13
While I enjoyed parking there when I owned a car, I am more than happy to see the pay stations going in. Parking shouldn't be free in such a dense neighborhood.
14
This will affect the homeless population in the park a great deal.

How? People living in their cars should find a neighborhood where parking isn't at a premium, like Northgate.
15
@14 -- I totally agree. We should buy the homeless people one-way bus tickets to some other city where the weather is nicer year round.
16
@12, holy crap, I didn't even notice that, because I couldn't even tell what the hell he was saying @9. But yeah, Will in Seattle's repertoire of dickhead moves is ever-expanding.
17
@7 Store your private car on your private property. If you want to store your private car on public property, you should pay for it.

This is great! Again the city of Seattle screws people who live in the neighborhood. Believe it or not there are people who live in the neighborhood and even right on Broadway. Basically the city has said screw you! We won't make businesses provide parking we'll just screw the residents. Greedy bastards.

Please wait...
