Well, if it's any consolation, "cornhole" is one word.
2
My first exposure to corn dogs was when I was a kid, at the Minnesota State Fair. Except they were called Pronto Pups and they weren't really corn dogs since Pronto Pups are made with flour batter instead of corn batter. And I still love them -- slathered with mustard, of course -- although I don't have them very often and now prefer corn dogs to the Pups. Haven't been to Unicorn yet. Guess I should go and try one there.

I always assumed that Pronto Pups were invented somewhere in the Midwest but just Wikied them and found out that they were invented in Rockaway Beach, Oregon, in the late 1930s, by the husband and wife team of George and Versa Boyington.

The other thing I remember about Pronto Pups from the fair was the slogan on the booths: "Weiner Dun In A Bun." I had a no idea what a "Weiner Dun" was so I asked my dad and he explained it to me...although I still like the idea of there being something called a "Weiner Dun."

I don't know when Unicorn opened exactly, but say they've been open 100 days. 50 corndogs sold every day? Most of their menu is corndog based, but still I'm dubious.
4
Well, at least the two-word "corn dog" is consistent with M-W's open "hot dog"... which is only closed to "hotdog" when used as a transitive verb (wtf?!).
5
It's just same ol' drag queen comin' in to get her corn dog fixin' every night.
6
@4, oops. INtransitive verb.
7
I support the two-wordedness of "corn dog." Also, is it just me, or is Unicorn kind of annoying?
8
PINBALL!
9
cops there to brake up something on the weekend

straight men ruin the neighborhood

10
I think it should be hyphenized to give it that good, old-time, feel.

"Honey, would you please hold my corn-dog while I go corn-hole your sister?"
11
I don't have anything to say for or against the corn dogs (I've only tried the Unicorn Dog and I was hungover and it was dense and frightening, but friends assure me it was delicious), but Unicorn's brunch is super super tasty.
12
That's insane! I'm so glad to see they're doing well.
13
@4; makes sense to me:
Hot dog is one thing, hotdogging is when you show off.
It should be noted that the noun was coined as an anti-German statement during the War, replacing Frankfurter. ('Freedom fries' wasn't the first xenphobic use of nomenclature)
14
@7 Yes, but the corn dogs are delicious.
15
I think I just cleared my schedule for this weekend.
16
@13: It should be noted you're full of shit. The OED has newspapers in New Jersey and Tennessee referring to "‘hot dog’ peddlers" and "weinerwurst men ... preparing to get the ‘hot dogs’ ready for sale" in 1893. The same term was being used to mean a show-off by 1894, though it took until 1959 for the verb form to catch on.

I am totally gay for Unicorn. Love it, love it, love it, love it.

14 Corndogs to Go!

Please wait...
