If there is one area of Seattle that needs a dose of gentrification it is Rainier Valley. If it takes a wine bar to run the hustlers, dealers and killers out then so be it. Bring on the wine!
2
No no no!!! This can't happen!! Angie's was the final refuge for us curmudgeons in a neighborhood swallowed by young money!! I was on the fence for a while, but I'm really starting to believe those Mayan prophecies. James Brown dead and gone, Lousiana drowned in brine and oil, and now this...

Have fun overpaying for mediocrity and boredom at Lottie's / CC Ale House / Verve, frightened white people!

Great post, BJC.

who's fault is it that angie's can't keep their shit straight with the LCB?
6
@2, I can only conclude from @1 that you are a hustler dealer killer. I tip my hat to you.
7
wine bars and their patrons are fucking awful
8
Told ya this would happen if we built Light Rail there.

"Oh noes! Now all the good dive bars in Ballard are gone now that the residential towers of yuppies and artists have been built!"

Things change. Dive bars still exist, but there's nothing like a good soccer wine bar with a happy hour sushi special.
9
And Will waiting at the bar ready to help you groove on all his insights.
10
and by "fucking awful" I mean people like Will in Seattle
11
Great dive bar my ass. Nightlite is a great dive bar. Angie's is a crime ridden shithole.

Funny that all of my neighbors who live within close proximity to Angie's are thrilled, but the uptown assholes who rarely travel south of 90 are complaining. Where were the cries of outrage when chocolate city closed?

12
What are you even talking about @11? I live within (regular) walking distance of Angie's. It had its issues, that's for sure, but as far as dive bars go you simply don't get more genuine. It was a place where the ugly, the dispossessed and the broke were welcome. I'm truly bummed to see it go.
13
@12 I don't take issue with dive bars, hell I love them. I have been to Angie's on a number of occasions. But if you live in the neighborhood I don't understand how you do not see that the bar is a magnet for crime. There is constant drug dealing in the lot next door, a couple of firearm incidents have taken place on the premises, and the SPD are constantly being called to take care of some nonsense.

@13 We're like the blind men looking at an elephant. Of course I see the shit that goes down at Angie's, but I've always considered it a positive thing that there's a place in my neighborhood where the truly fucked up can congregate. They gotta go somewhere, and it seems to me that it's isolation that drives more people to crime & violence - being part of a social scene helps keep people social. It's not like drugs and guns are going to vanish from the neighborhood when Angie's goes, they'll just go down into some basement where there are fewer friends to keep an eye open so that things don't get out of hand.

And by the way, not being part of any of those scenes, I have NEVER been scared or threatened at Angie's. You?

Walking into Angie's my partner was slapped in the arm by a young thug trying to get their attention- as if to say 'you don't belong here' and when I asked him if he had a problem the whole group of young men standing outside the door surrounded me. I got the message...
16
"Of course I see the shit that goes down at Angie's, but I've always considered it a positive thing that there's a place in my neighborhood where the truly fucked up can congregate"

Well, how can I argue with that airtight logic. Jesus Christ.
17
I'm sorry - but when did the definition of dive bar become a drug dealer infested, charmless shithole? I've been to many a dive bar - and that is not typically the case. Rough and tumble yes, but open drug dealing on the street and prostitution? I don't think so - that is not good for ANY class of people... rich and young, or old and poor.

@14 "I've always considered it a positive thing that there's a place in my neighborhood where the truly fucked up can congregate". I think you would be in the minority with that opinion. You must not have children.

Also gentrification = "the restoration of run-down urban areas by the middle class". Eliminating a crime-ridden bar is hardly "restoring" anything. Seeing Angie's go would be making the neighborhood better even if all the so-called "white" establishments weren't there.

ECB at Publicola nailed it.

If you think this is a gentrification issue you are missing the fucking point.

All these negatives comments, that most people said about Angies is the fact that you were never there. Other than hearsay from a person/s that dislike a large congregation of people with different color - other than caucasian. Don't make up a lie to put your point across. If you looked at the history of Columbia City as whole. These yuppies will only there for the short term. CC Ale House / Elbow rooms have more drug dealing, thugs, and prostitutions than it's counter part across the street. When Elbow room close down, those you so call hoodlums shifted to Angies. Now, that Angies is close - guess what. It will shift back to them. But these time they have more venues to play around since there's more bars in the area. I will wish all the luck to the business owners of Columbia City.
BTW. Columbia City was partially built by brothels houses or buildings that still stand to date. Enjoy your overpriced foods and drinks on brothel houses.

Read the police reports and the testimony from defenders who frequented Angie's, as well as those of us who tried to visit or even just walk the sidewalk in front of the joint. Angie's catered to criminals and served as a one-stop shopping spot for drugs, prostitution, harrassment, and alcohol induced assaults. Not to mention the citation for serving alcohol to minors and the reputation for serving alcohol to already wasted patrons. Even defenders acknowledge the criminal activities that occured in the the place, suggesting that the community should simply accept criminal activity as a result of a demographic that is not yet fully gentrified. No crime won't go away, but closing down headquarters and satelite offices like Angie's is a great deterrent and importantly moves illicit activities to areas where innocent victims are less likely to become casualties. Kudos to the public servants for their work to keep the law-abiding citizens safe while making life more difficult for criminals.

Please wait...
