He does have a point, insofar as the majority of novels you'll see people reading on planes really are tired, contrived, and essentially purposeless.

Stupid. Very stupid.

Things like this really anger me. It comes from the academics who think we should be listening to atonal music because tonality is so played out. Really.

@3 has the right of it; although we've pretty much mapped the whole terrain of what can happen in a closed narrative, we won't stop enjoying narratives any more than we'll stop enjoying food when all it is is yet another tired combination of protein, carbs, and fat.
