King's Hardware, Walrus and the Carpenter, Staple & Fancy Mercantile... "Waiter, there's a doorknob in my soup."

There were two outstanding food items at the SIFF Opening Night party - one was from a great Mexican restaurant in U Village and the other was Ivar's, although the place next to the cupcakes was fun too.

Never got the cupcakes - they went too fast.

Anyone know the names of those restaurants?

Aw. I had some good times at Union. It was in a really shitty location, though. Good thing we have other awesome Ethan Stowell places to frequent in Union's stead.
4
@3, yeah, there's no shortage of Stowell outposts thank goodness, and I remember when Union opened I wondered if it filled a need for any diner in particular, or if it was just one piece of the chef's strategy to saturate different nabes and see what stuck.
5
The Union is where I coined the term: cheatery. It was godawfully overhyped and overpriced.
6
Shit, I already lived through an era when every damn restaurant and fern bar had a clever name like The Great Pacific Northwest Eaterium and The Salad Bar and Sandwich Laboratory and Burtenfarckers And Somdomittes' Fantastic Dineinarium. What happens when you tell your server it's your birthday at How To Cook A Wolverine? Do they come out with berets on and improvise a prose poem about your childhood while serving you a special ox comfit?
7
It sounds like he's essentially moving Union's kitchen to Ballard.
8
Walrus and the Carpenter.... Reference to famous Lewis Carroll poem. Thus no ampersand. Involves an oyster.

If you're looking for lunch food, Amazon has a new restaurant in SLU with "a focus on sustainable, local, healthy food." Nice big sign on the door, hours are M-F 7am-4pm. But HA HA you can't eat there:

@1 and @6 (and @10 by association) - you are my new favorite people.

both A&O and HTCAW are plenty spendy, if you don't want to leave hungry.

that space (Union) is the kiss of death for restaurants.

Canlis and The Georgian Room are still open. Thus I am satisfied. Granted, I can't afford either of them, but it's good to know they are still there.

They, and the Wedgwood Broiler. They're all I need.

And #6, I love you. I also hate you, for being pithier than I could ever hope to be. But I'm funny that way.

Please wait...
