And that's for marriage, not even domestic partnerships or other "marriage in name only" sorts of arrangements. Slowly but surely, justice will triumph.
2
Interesting numbers. Especially encouraging that now a majority of self-identified moderates supports gay marriage.
Also noteworthy is the fact that the increase in support has been so much greater among liberals and moderates. To me, it implies that for the past 10-15 years, activists have mostly "preached to the converted" (of course, they were not fully converted yet, as the figures for '96 show). While this has worked fairly well so far, I believe the next challenge will be to convince the self-identified conservatives-yet-not-religious-fundamentalists in order to establish actual majorities.
(assuming that no more than approx. 30% of the population are more or less lost for this cause due to their religious adherences - at least for now).

What is Maggie up to these days? Since, she no longer heads up NOM now, is she still on the payroll so to speak? Her letter announcing that she was stepping down didn't sound like she was pleased.
4
I heart evolution. 2020-2040 is when we either become a mature nation at last, or the next "war for southern independence" opens up.
5
And yet, in 30 tries, homosexual marriage has failed to gain a victory in even one state....
6
@4 Please let it be the former. In spite of some positive effects of the last one there was far too much bloodshed on both sides. And I suspect that if there's another one the end result will still be the same as the last one.

Besides I'd hate to move. As frustrating as it can be at times it is my home.

Another important demographic cut I'd like to see more from polling on social issues: South vs. non-South.

(I've seen Obama's approval number cut in this manner. Don't recall the numbers, but I recall the split being quite staggering.)

If 28% of Republicans (and 25% of conservatives) are in favor of gay marriage, there might also quite a gap between South and non-South Republicans (and conservatives).

Translation: Sounds like time for Ed Murray and Jamie Pedersen to get to work on pull marriage equality for the 2011 legislative session.

@4 -- This time we wave bye-bye and let them go, cut them off at the knees (no more social security, medicare, ag supports, highway funds, defense contracts, etc.), build a fence to keep them out, and tax the snot out of any trade with them (if we don't just outright embargo it.)

This post is another thinly veiled hint from Dan that his tongue is what he wishes was twisting Maggie's panties....

too late.
you wanted us and now you're stuck with us....
12
No, let the anti-gay factions stick around. We saw how they got all red-faced over R-71, screaming about "WE HAVE WON IN 30 STATES, YOU'RE NEXT WASHINGTON!" and "PREPARE TO CRY GIRLS HAHAHAHA!", then pulling back, post-victory, "IT WAS ONLY DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS".

However, I'm having strong misgivings about keeping gay rights solely a "liberal" position along with others like health care. Positioning it as a more moderate position will probably be a better idea because it's one of those things that the GOP can use to scrape off huge swaths of votes, especially in the 2012 election.

Coming to think of it, I may have to reconsider what I said earlier. This may not necessarily be a question of overall national majorities; it may be more important to establish 60+% majorities in a number of states to a) make sure it will be legalized there and b) establish a base of support in congress. The overall national majority may be rather irrelevant.
Strategically, this would mean proponents should focus on moderates and conservatives in relatively liberal areas/states.
14
@11, G'wan, I dare ya! Run that filthy Dixie rag up the flagpole and declare your independence again. See what happens THIS time, sucker!
15

cause it WAS only DP.....

a run on Depends in the rest of the QuSA??
17
@16, Ha! The end of freedom as you know it, theocratic-ass-kissing grits boy! The only civil war will be between the Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell factions for control of the national church of CSA, while the rest of us fence you off to stew in your own impoverished juices, and stop selling you guns.
18
This is great news, but it still concerns me that 30% of self-identified liberals oppose it. WTF?

30 minutes to reply?

admit it, you had to run home for some dry panties...

Obviously 30% of all Liberals are HOMOPHOBIC HATERS!!!

Right Dan?!

Kick Them Out!!!

(let's see, 19% minus 30% of that equals about 13%.....)
21
@19, BTW, what are you planning to use for currency? Bags of pig manure? You got nothing once we cut you loose from our monetary system. Your bank deposits go poof when the Federal Reserve reverses your balances and the FDIC walks away. Your states and localities collapse when the national bond insurers drop your bonds. Car manufacturers shut down assembly plants that make product they can't sell north of the new fence. Who's going to loan you money? Cuba? Mexico? Maybe you could sell your country music industry to France. The part that's not already owned by multinationals, that is. You got nothing, just a failed pipe dream and a skewed world view.
22
Brooklyn Reader, you're engaging in a battle of wits with an unarmed combatant.

from kim's article:

"One of the truly great honors of fighting to protect marriage is the amazing people you get to meet all around this country. People who stand up to hatred, stand up with unfailing decency and civility-but with a relentless and unfailing courage to stand for the truth about the good."

what does that even mean?
24
@22 Yeah, it's pretty funny.

He doesn't think he's unarmed, though. Really, all I was trying to do was help him think it through. With our membership in the U.N., and our position on international law, I can't imagine there'd actually be a Civil War again over the issue of secession. There'd be a plebescite in each state, which if successful would be followed by a negotiated separation and new international borders. Most separatist Southerners have no clue of what life would look like afterwards without their U.S. citizenship, nor even that they're currently net beneficiaries of the federal budget, while us despised liberal Northerners are supporting them as net contributors.

'Tis a pity he's not unopinionated as well as unarmed.
25
@19: Bring it, you filthy Johnny Reb. We kicked your asses last time and we'll do it again. I'd like to see you ignorant assbags win a war without the vast majority of research institutions and heavy manufacturing facilities. Not to mention the fact that the North has the main breadbasket states. We will wipe the floor with you Dumbfuckistanis if you even try it.

@20: I've looked over your math (as it were) several times and referred back to the table, and have come to the conclusion that you think that a plus sign is an obscure Ghey glyph representing a butt plug. Seriously, your math (as it were) makes no sense, indicating that you have a generally shaky grip of all things arithmetic.

I'm sure we can print worthless paper as fast as Obama.
Be sure when the FDIC walks away that it doesn't forget to take Obama's $19Trillion debt with him.

Who loans YOU money?
I suspect the Chinese may find us a better bet than a down for the count bankrupt rump state run by Socialist Liberals....

And you better count up who makes what cars before you crow too long.
3 of 5 Toyota plants are in the South (if West Virginia comes back home make that 4 of 5, with #6 going up in Mississippi)
All BMWs and Mercedes are manufactured in the South.

And don't look now but your Boeing jets are also "Made in Dixie".

Speaking of West Virginia, when the big split comes do you think W Va will decide to stay with Mass and Washington or come home? Kentucky? Maryland?

Is that plebescite going to be by county?
If so look for huge hunks of Ohio and Indiana and Illinois to come our way too.

Arizona?
Idaho?
Utah?
California? A state that slammed homosexual marriage twice probably has a lot of counties that could learn to love the Allman Brothers.

Have you seen an electoral map of Washington State broken down by county? Dixie may be a lot closer than you think....

Sure. You keep the FDIC and Obama debt.

What manufacturing America still does is done down South.

And huge hunks of the nation are Red and, if all it takes is a UN plebescite, will find the Conservative Grass awfully green and tempting.

Do you think anybody in the world loves you?
Sure, Cuba.
And China.
And Russia.
And France.
I imagine we could rent out dock space at Norfolk to any number of nations eager to be our friend.

Don't forget, the UN will make sure we get our fair share of the nukes. (you know Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan inherited 6500 nuclear weapons from the USSR...)

Will Alaska get a vote? We won't be shy about drilling for oil there....
How much of the oil and natural gas will we take with us?
You think Chavez gives you shit?
Wait till you come begging us for a petroleum fix to feed your addiction...

Solar energy?
They don't call us the Sunny South for nothing.
How much sunshine do you pale hipsters get in Seattle, anyway?

Now that you mention it, we like our odds.
a lot.

Anybody got the phone number for the UN?

Gee Jr, we saw how you handled N Vietnam.
Are you going to lick us before or after you lick Afghanistan?
Last time we tangled you took 600,000 casualties.
As a proportion of the population that would be about 6 million today.
Obama is no Lincoln.
Will he inspire you girls to die by the millions to bring us back into the union?
Will you sign up?
(bring your own diapers...)
28
@26 & 27 Aren't you part of the crowd that was all for steamrolling into Afghanistan, not to mention Vietnam, and like as the Iraq and South Africa as well?

Don't blame others for the wars you start and find you can't win.
29
South Africa?
30
@27: I'd gladly fight and die to defend my country from scum like you. Yes, last time the North took casualties. Yup. But we KICKED YOUR DIXIE ASSES so bad that the South is still a backwater compared to the North. Don't count on too many Southerners wanting to try it again for the sake of your bigotry on the day you declare the new Confederacy.
And if that day ever comes around, I'll see you in Hell, Sheol, or wherever.
But it'll be you giving me the orientation tour, not vice versa.
31
30 and yet all those yankees keep fleeing to the South (and bringing their Congressional seats with them, we are picking up 18-21 seats this census...) if you end up the last one left up north don't be all afraid now...
32
@31: Do you have any idea how ridiculous your logic is? Every Northerner moving down South is still a Northerner. If your state picks up a seat from the influx of Yanks, then that seat (maybe a few seats if the distribution works out) will be pretty damn likely to go blue.
In other words, when you're becoming a minority in your own turf due to an influx of people from another locale, it's not generally the time to talk about how you're therefore kicking their asses.
But then again, you're a fuckwit, so I've come to expect this from you.
33
32
you don't know how gerrymandering works, do you...
we put all those ernest yankee voters to work electing Red Congressmen.
34
@33: You do realize that the South is already about as gerrymandered as it can be in order to disenfranchise blacks and latinos?
There's only so much you crooks can do before you start to lose ground BADLY.
35
34
Now Jr, don't underestimate our ingenuity.
btw it looks like Washington won't be getting a new seat after all,
and, sorry- you are losing your congressman ;)

(AP) The U.S. Census Bureau conducted a comprehensive census on April 1, 2010. Based on the populations counted in each state, the United States Congress will be reapportioned. Since the Census Bureau releases population estimates every year, projections have been made that predicted the states' populations as of April 1, 2010.

The latest figures indicate that twelve seats would shift between the states as follows:

Texas +4
Arizona +2
Florida +2
Georgia +1
Nevada +1
South Carolina +1
Utah +1

Illinois -1
Iowa -1
Louisiana -1
Massachusetts -1
Michigan -1
Minnesota -1
Missouri -1
New Jersey -1
New York -1
Pennsylvania -1
Ohio -2

Looks like a net gain of 11 for the Red States,
8 in the South (10 if we count Arizona as a Southern state- works for us...)

Please wait...
