I wonder what would happen if people from nearby areas started challenging any awards the school got ...
2
I hope the bastards wind up having to pay for Constance's rug munching all the way through college.
3
The thing is, if they'd told the judge outright that the parents were planning on holding two separate, private proms, there might not have been anything the courts could have done about it (at least if Palmer v. Thompson is any indication). Now, though, those school officials might be on the hook for perjury. Well done, guys.
4
Oh, and don't forget all of the lovely blog posts from IAHS prom attendee's patting themselves on the back for the ruse.
5
You know, I wonder sometimes how these kids are going to look back at what they did in 10 or 20 years. I've read all kinds of stories by gay people who say that 10 or 20 years ago their classmates were assholes, but now they have grown up. These kids are even more behind the times. How does it impact someone to look back and realize that they were on the wrong side of history?
6
Were I King of America, I'd have the kids and parents involved in this twisted deception walled off inside their pimple of a town, until such time as they learn how to behave in a civilized society. Of course, that would probably only exacerbate the inbreeding problem.
7
@6: If someone died and made me Hitler, I'd have said that they were wrong to pardon the Confederates. Every member of the Confederate military above the rank of corporal gets thirty days to leave the country forever or be shot in the face until dead.

It sounds barbaric, but think about it: No "Southern Strategy." No Jim Crow laws. No rhetoric against "carpetbaggers" (i.e., loyal citizens going to rebuild the United States). No more compromises about whether minorities are actually people. No bullshit about how "the South shall rise again." Bigotry will always be with us, but we would have expelled or killed most of the bigots--and if you don't say they deserved it, then you're as much of a traitor to the Union as anyone who marched in grey.

The Southerners are a conquered people, and we should treat them as such people were treated in the Bible--i.e., without pity and without mercy.

Fuck the South.
8
@7: The aggrieved losers circle their wagons in an act of defiance against the victors and against what those victors are believed to represent. As with any wounded animal, the losers can inflict great harm upon anything they perceive as a threat to themselves.

Advice: use a tranquilizer to subdue. Then fix them to make them less territorial.
9
@7 - Whenever I see the battle flag of the confederacy used in a positive way, I consider that person a traitor.
10
now now girls-
you'd cry yourselves sick if we were really gone.

11
@10 you've obviously never heard of the expression "tears of joy". Which makes sense as someone so hateful has probably never experienced such an emotion.

Also, that song sucks. If that's the best the south has to offer, we've already won.
12
I can't help but think about the gay closeted children attending that horrid school right now, who don't have the cold comfort of graduating this month like Constance does. What a nightmarish, horrible place it must be. My heart goes out to anyone with a heart who is stuck in that backwater dump.
13
In ten years time these kids will still be patting themselves on the back over "the Victory of Aught Ten".

In twenty years time they'll be manning the bulwarks, awaiting the "Godless, Socialist, Librul hordes" that never arrive.

In thirty years time, their offspring, bored to distraction (!) will venture out into the "real world" and realize their forgotten backwater of a town has been completely and thoroughly ignored for three decades, while the rest of civilized society moved forward without them.

At which point the town itself will die of atrophy and neglect, and the names of everyone who ever admitted to have lived in it - save one - will have been completely wiped off the slate of history.

And it'll serve 'em fuckin' right...
14
Funny thing about "Sweet Home Alabama." The whole point of the song was that they didn't want people (and Neil Young specifically) lumping everyone in the South in with people like the segregationist George Wallace and the awful monsters involved in lynchings. But the lyrics were just ambiguous enough to look like an endorsement of Wallace...and then it was appropriated by groups like the KKK. Pretty ironic when you think about it, really.
15
@14: ...and then KENTUCKY Fried Chicken used "Sweet Home ALABAMA" in a TV ad. Needless to say, those schmucks left out the lyrics.

@10: Okay, we'd miss Austin. But Austin's not really part of the South.
16
@14

Looks to me that the reason the song is misinterpreted is because Van Zant wrote some really dumb lyrics & then he tried to defend himself. There doesn't seem to be any ambiguity w/ "Watergate does not bother me." The only defense would be that Van Zant didn't comprehend the issue, and simply referred to political corruption w/ a smarmy reply "does your conscience bother you?" instead of an act of treason, where the presidential '72 presidential election was sabotaged and rigged. I don't give a damn what anyone's conscience is, directly perverting the voting process and our democracy is beyond the pale. Nixon, his aides & the entire staff of CREEP should have been either hanged or jailed for life for high treason.
17
@16:

Well, being generous, I don't think what they did was a Capital Crime, but, if it had been up to me I would most definitely have put the whole lot in a Maximum Security Penal Institution (tm) for, say, 20 years or so.

In which case, Colson's conversion probably would have been a lot more genuine under the circumstances, and we wouldn't have had a longer break before being subjected to Liddy's pseudo-paranoid fantasies, if nothing else. And Paisley would have been a minor footnote - oh, what. Paisley is still a minor footnote.

20-20 hindsight, and all, you know...
18
@ 16 - I was just talking about the "Governor" bit. Of course, it's possible that Van Zant wasn't being truthful about the explanation, but how should I know?

Too sleepy to get into the Watergate bit.
19
@7 wow, you make yourself sound extremely stupid. if you think carpetbaggers were people who went to the south to "rebuild" it then you are as ignorant as the teachers and parents in itawamba. slavery was only one aspect of the civil war. if you think that north of the mason disxon line there wasn't slavery and racism then you are living in a dream. it would be wonderful if the american civil war were as simple as one group of people fighting for the freedom of another but wars aren't that simple and people aren't that good.
20
@15 And probably Houston as well, and Atlanta, and a lot of other major cities. It makes me wonder how well the troll's secessionist fantasies would actually work, given that not all Southerners are high school dropouts living in tarpaper shacks using their local public library's internet access to post snide comments on SLOG.
21
11
gosh, so sorry you don't like our song.
what are your songs?

Seattle - how about 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?
(or "Singing in the Rain"?)

For you yankees?
gotta be something by the Boss-
we know; "My Hometown" (you know, the guy moves his family South at the end of the song...)
although our personal favorite would be "Downbound Train" (oops, the guys wife dumps him and goes South to find a real man...)
don't like the Jersy thing?
how about the Piano Man? "Allentown"?

perhaps you have other ideas?

please share....

The Alcorn County School Board voted May 18 to allow parents to take over sponsorship of proms. Superintendent Stacy Suggs said the decision was partially tied to Itawamba County.

''Principals don't want to police proms anyway,'' Suggs said Monday. ''It just gave us an opportunity to bring it up from a liability standpoint.''

Sweet, let's allow the parents to hold their own proms, so next time the school can't get sued, and the parents can claim that the party is private and they can invite (or not) who they want.

Kids, just move away from the south as soon as you find yourself checking out your own gender, save yourself the heartache.
23
@20
Oh, those states seem to keep their cities under control pretty well.
All Southern and Border states have outlawed homosexual marriage, all but one by State Constitution.
Most also outlaw homosexual domestic partnership and specify that they will not recognize DP or marriage from other states.
Those measures pass with huge margins, 75-86% in Deep South states- so the Houstons and Atlantas of the South won't cause us no nevermind....

btw, Rhett, you err in calling it our fantasy- you'll see it was the disgusted/disgusting liberals with their Hitler fantasies dreaming of expelling and exterminating us.
Actually, when we go it will be because the liberals are begging us to, and paying us off to do so-
"Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.
And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.
And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.
And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:
And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians."
24
22 now you're catching on.....
25
@21 Downtown by Petula Clark. You even have to ask.

@23 Polls are showing, our support is growing, yours is dwindling. It's just a matter of time. Your kind is not long for this world.
26
@23
btw, Rhett, you err in calling it our fantasy- you'll see it was the disgusted/disgusting liberals with their Hitler fantasies dreaming of expelling and exterminating us.

Haven't read much history, have you? Of course reading isn't your strong suit. Why not try and get that GED again? Third time's a charm, you know. Anyway, if you'd spent a little less time sitting in the back of the classroom chewing tobacco and a little more time listening you'd know, among other things, that the Bible's not a history book.

Oh yeah, and I love how the Southern states keep their cities "under control". That's why Houston elected a lesbian mayor.
27
26
Can she get married in Houston?
28
25 In our neck of the woods we still pull 80% and the high schoolers seem to be upholding the standard.
29
@27 Not yet. But maybe you've noticed a trend in most city governments, North and South, toward granting the same benefits to same-sex couples that married couples already enjoy.

Like I said, Bubba, get your GED, or maybe just try reading some history. No one's dreamed of "expelling and exterminating" you. That's what psychologists call "projection". Just because you want to drive out or kill anyone who doesn't fit into your white, Baptist society doesn't mean that those of us who disagree with you feel the same way.
30
maybe you've noticed a trend in southern state legislatures toward making it illegal for cities to grant the same benefits to same-sex couples that married couples already enjoy.
31
@30 No, Bubba, I haven't noticed that. Maybe you could cite some of those cities, or do they only exist in your imagination?
And even if there are cities who've passed such measures, do you expect them to stand up to legal challenges?

Maybe you should wear some eye protection at your next cross burning, Bubba. Those cinders are impairing your vision.
32
The interpretation of Springsteen was as ill-thought out as anything else posted by the fool. The guy say he thinks about going south not that he does. The response to the thought of quitting the town is the narrator taking his boy much in the same way as his father before him and passing down the same love for the home town that he has. In Downbound Train the man's wife leaves him but does not say where she goes. Additionally the Downbound Train does not travel to Dixie, it travels to despair and ultimately the grave.
33
32
you funny boy!
34
Hell, it has distracted *me* and I'm just some old guy on the other side of the country.
35
@31
'States', Rhett- 'states'.
Is it 5 o'clock where you are?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A proposal that would void an Atlanta city ordinance requiring associations such as the Druid Hills Golf Club to extend marriage benefits to gay couples cleared its final hurdle in the General Assembly on Thursday.

House Rules Committee Chairman Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs) introduced the bill, which would prevent local governments across Georgia from enacting laws requiring organizations to extend domestic benefits to gay couples.

Sen. John Wiles (R-Marietta) carried the bill in the Senate.

“There’s no right for a city government, state government or county government to provide benefits to unmarried persons,” Wiles said from the Senate well.

Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) said that legislators were using the issue of domestic benefits for gay couples to pander to voters.

“We use the term ‘local control’ in education and law enforcement,” Fort said. “But when it comes to discrimination … we don’t want local control. When it comes to the city of Atlanta, local control means nothing. It means nothing at all. It’s the height of hypocrisy.”
36
@31
Michigan isn't in Dixie but they try.....

Ruling goes against same-sex benefits

Defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, as Michigan voters did with Proposal 2 in November, also signals the end of health care and other benefits for the same-sex partners of public employees in the state, according to an opinion issued Wednesday by Attorney General Mike Cox.

The opinion came in response to a question about benefits for employees of the City of Kalamazoo. The same legal theories would apply to public schools and universities which offer same-sex benefits, said an official in the Attorney General's Office who asked not to be identified.

In the absence of a contrary opinion from a court, the attorney general's interpretation of the law is generally binding on state agencies.

"The bottom line is that the law is what the law is," Cox said. "This is the logical outcome of what the voters approved."
37
@35 & 36: Nice try, Bubba. You cite two examples, one of which isn't even from the South. That does not make a "trend", although I'm sure your redneck dictionary allows you to define words any way you like.
Your Atlanta story also says the bill "cleared its final hurdle" but there's no information as to whether it actually passed.

And, as I said, the laws may not survive legal challenges. Ever read the 14th Amendment? I'm thinking specifically of the part that says, "nor shall any State...deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".

It's very simple, Bubba, so simple even you should be able to understand it. Allowing others to live their lives and enjoy the same legal protections you enjoy is not in any way an infringement upon your rights.
38
By the way, Bubba, the Atlanta story strikes an ordinance requiring mandatory domestic partner benefits. Businesses, and the government of the city of Atlanta, can still provide domestic partner benefits if they wish.

That's a far cry from your claim of a trend toward cities "making it illegal for cities to grant the same benefits to same-sex couples that married couples already enjoy".

I'm glad you're demonstrating some literacy skills, but you really need to work on your reading comprehension.
39
The song says, "It's five o'clock somewhere." It's almost five o'clock where I am now, and it's clear that Bubba's checkmate was premature. I've given plenty of free advice, but here's a little more: don't claim that there's a "trend" that proves your argument unless it's a trend that actually exists.
40
@39: Have you seen this thread? http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive…
Alleged is trying to prove that Dan's a transphobic biphobic hater by quoting every last yahoo who said so on the web. It's rather disturbing that he cares that much.
41
40
actually those were only the first four hits on google.
it must be quite a shock for a credulous asskissing fanboy like yourself- maybe you should have your mommy censor it for you...
42
@40 I'm tempted to check it out, but in this thread alone Alleged has already lost what little credibility he had by making a blatantly false claim. That explains why he's stopped using his registered name: posting anonymously means never having to admit he's a liar.

Oh, and look, @41 he's using his second-favorite tactic. When fabrication fails he reverts to distraction.
43
42
wow
we feel really bad.
maybe we can regain some credibility by
mocking brutally bashed homosexuals and
using transgenderism as a slur.
44
@43: You're totally familiar with the use of sarcasm, Alleged, and always know when someone is satirizing the opinions of another.
How about you gain (regain, for you, is impossible by definition) some credibility by at least attempting to be grammatically correct and cutting back on your addiction to the [Enter] key.
45
I'm sort of surprised that no one mentioned how Jewel is from Alaska. Seems a bit rich to be covering Sweet Home Alabama.
46
@44 I find it interesting that Alleged considers lying to be a lesser sin than thinking homosexuals deserve to die. Of course I'm being generous in assuming that Alleged really considers either lying or believing anyone deserves to die to actually be a sin.
47
46
Sin?
How quaintly Southern.....
48
45

yeah.

we're pretty sure that's illegal.
49
"Every member of the Confederate military above the rank of corporal gets thirty days to leave the country forever or be shot in the face until dead."

Great, now I'm picturing zombie confederates staggering out of the graveyards they've all been in for quite some time.

(Sorry for continuing the off-topic-ness.)
50
@48 You're not really from the South, are you, Bubba? Clearly inbreeding isn't limited to below the Mason-Dixon line. That's okay, though. The results are still the same. With each passing day your numbers are declining.
51
50
now Rhett, we know your momma tells you everybody does it but she lied to you.

Please wait...
