I love this.

Either that or a Helen Thomas Pavilion of Truth. We could fill the latter with glass sculptures by Chihulhy and use it for batting practice.
2
My job involves getting large numbers of people to do things in Seattle.

I could sell the fuck out of a Northwest Native Cultural Center. White guilt should be used for good.
3
"How About Rightful Duwamish Takeback?"

What, a casino?
4
"I could sell the fuck out of a Northwest Native Cultural Center"

So, yes, a casino!
5
"My job involves getting large numbers of people to do things in Seattle."

Do they prefer black jack or poker?
6
"white guilt should be used for good"

Speak for yourself whitey.

BTW I'm 1/16th Chipaquaw, can I get a freeebie?
7
Sorry @6, you're SOL. But, whichever of your parents is 1/8 "Chipaquaw" (I'm guessing you really meant Chappaquah) can get the freebie for you...

LOVE the idea.

And the unregistered commenter needs to educate themselves. Casinos do not pay out to or benefit the tribes who open them. Decades of oppression do not result in financial expertise or unbiased sharing of wealth and opportunity. Throwing money at problems doesn't solve them on reservations or anywhere else.
9
@8 - Depends on the tribe. Some times when the tribe pools the money they share it with everyone, or vote on how to spend it, or it goes into operators pockets. It just depends.
10
That's perfect!! A casino, a discount cigarette shack, fireworks vendors in July, and a few broken down single-wides for decor. It would be wonderful.
11
@8: then why would you open them? the muckleshoots increased the payout to tribe members from 2k to 20k/year due to the casinos.
12
How many broken down cars will they leave outside on the grass?

"the muckleshoot"

The Muckleshoot are well known as the rejects from the other tribes.
13
one of the other benefits of the casinos is that the tribes are now able to hire the lawyers that are experts in land/water/treaty issues so they can effectively remedy past wrongs and treaty violations; oh and also, they often hire biologists, teachers and health care and social workers.
14
Just think of it.

It's springtime and the kidlings have a class on native culture. They get on the bus or monorail to Seattle Center, and then spend the day sitting outside amongst the totem poles and grass listening to the oral traditions of Seattle's founding culture.

Sweet.
15
" Decades of oppression do not result in financial expertise or unbiased sharing of wealth and opportunity."

So why not tax them?

"they often hire biologists, teachers and health care and social workers."

White folk!

Actually I'd support another INdian casino at the Seattle Center, it's a great way to distribute money from Cambodians, Vietnamese, Chinese, black and poor whites to Indians. An idiot tax, like the lottery, for po' folk.

Ain't income redistribution sweet!
16
" spend the day sitting outside amongst the totem poles and grass listening to the oral traditions of Seattle's founding culture."

You can do that already at Victor Steinbrueck Park with the added traditional native practice of the passing of the malt liquor bottle.
17
Well, at least it's not some stupid Asian center. All they ever gave us was tacky houses, car wrecks, and public health problems.
18
@17 Yes, but the food is great and except for the Cambodians, the Asians aren't all on welfare!
19
I would love it if they'd bring the duck hunting part of their history to the Seattle Center.
Duck hunting aside, it might help the Duwamish get their federal tribal status--aren't they still hung up in court over that?
20
Want.
21
The Canoe Center on Lake Union sounds awesome.
22
Sounds like it might be inetersting for a few visits, but the KEXP idea might keep people coming back for longer.
23
Much better idea than KEXP.
24
Duwamish can speak for themselves and I would rather hear from them directly

Please wait...
