This is not hard...grab a cop while his is arresting your unruly freind, YOU GET PUNCHED! Don't whine about your whittle owwy. She was not hurt, unlike her past victims.
104
Read the story. He asked them to come over when they jaywalked in front of him - they insulted him and blew him off. If a cop tells you to do something, just do it. You have rights, but if you start acting like a cop doesn't have the authority to pull you aside to talk to you, you're going to have problems.

Seriously. If you think she didn't know what she was doing, that she thought the big bad white cop was taking her away forever or she was scared and fighting back naturally - get a fucking clue.

And for the people complaining it took him too long to arrest her - I'm sure he could have used a lot more force and probably broken her arm or something. I'm sure the pack of people would have loved that. They really should have gotten that guy a taser or something.

@84 read the story. They were fifteen feet from the footbridge. You can see it in the video.
105
When that girl touched that officer she changed which way things should go, I would of hit her too. What surprises me is how weak that officer was, what took him so long to cuff the first girl, he should of took her straight to the ground once she started resisting.
106
You should always obey the law, FIRST!

And then, if you feel you were not treated correctly, you deal with that later, in court.

If that rule had been followed, this situation would not even be relevant!
107
I guess black girls don't get Miranda rights?
C'mon, he struck her in the face. That's an escalation of a tense situation into a violent one, something a police officer should never do. Cops are trained to defuse situations like this rapidly and quickly--there are a million holds he could've used to prevent this girl from using her arms, and he didn't manage to successfully use any of them. There was only shoving involved, no one actually hit him. And all their motions were defensive.
Also, some cop starts yelling at me because I jaywalked, he'd be lucky if I only gave him a dismissive gesture. Someone tries to ticket me over that, and I'm gonna think he's got a chip on his shoulder (which it clearly seems this incompetent cop does).
108
PAUL I GUESS YOUR A WHITE MAN WHO BEATS HIS WIFE BECAUSE THATS A FEMALE NO MATTER WHAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE HT HER BUT HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED FOR BACK UP!LORD HELP YOUR SOLE FOR BEING SO DUMB AND I HOPE YOU DONT HAVE A DAUGHTER BECAUSE SOME MAN IS GOING TO BEAT HER AND LETS SEE HOW YOU FEEL THEN!
109
in any "GOOD" area the by-standers would have help the solo police man detain the girl
instead of just standing there like a moroon saying "REALLY?" and watching these punks..

it is to laugh ...that is probably the FIRST TIME in her young life that someone responded to her MOUTH..... she is so used to being mouthy.. and the good people leave the situation so as not to cause a scene... but the cop did his job...I am only surprised he did not taser her as she deserved
110
The Philly of @87 is much more like the one I remember than that of @91. Just as a point of face for the West Coasters.

@91: Sorry you've had a bad experience here. I actually think East Coast cities (NJ excluded) feel safer for civilians then Seattle but I know that's a matter of opinion.
111

this is great let's smack 'em more often. fist to face, not a bad deal.
beats two thousand pounds o' metal taking your foolish ass out. girl took herself to "ass kicking
court" and lost! fuck you psuedotolerentseattle and your cops too.
112
First, I don't agree with the power the News Media uses to control government and all the political bull shit the general public has to put up with!!! The News Media needs to report BOTH SIDES OF A STORY!!! This incident will probably stir up even more racial unrest and hatred! It's about time the BLACK COMMUNITY AND IT'S LEADERS do their part to ease the unrest developing! I for one am getting sick and tired of these black kids thinking they can do anything they want, and just because they are black no one can touch them, or do anything to control their actions! We the general public DOES NOT OWE them any extra freedom just because they are black. They already have the same opportunities as everyone else!! They need to grow up and learn to develope their minds and work within the communities they live in. There are a lot GOOD BLACK LEADERS in our communities, but they had to earn their place in this world just like everyone else. If unrest continues, there will be another "Watts Riot" like war. And no one wants that!!

the cop needs to arrest the sheboon that got punched, clearly a case of interfering with an officer, and the sheboon who did get arrested needs to be charged with inciting a riot for calling for others to attack the cop. kudos to the cop for handling a dangerous situation in which he was in great danger.
cops need to carry multiple tasers in negro areas
114
the behavior of these two sheboons raises a larger question, why do negroes living in a nice city like seattle, very liberal, very tolerant, act the same as negroes in oakland, camden, gary, east st louis, compton, detroit, memphis, new orleans, richmond,? (basically any city in america with more than a 10% negro pop) TNB is innate, it is not driven by enviroment, though it is exacerbated by the proximity of negroes in the community.

the old adage is true, you can take the negro out of the jungle, but........
115
remember seattle, 90% of all inter-racial (black/white) crime is black on white
116
A lot of the posters here just want an excuse to be allowed to be racist in public.

And wish we lived in a police state.

They should move back to Russia.
117
Yes it was just jay walking. However from my understanding the department is trying to put a stop to it. The problem is the first girl would not comply with his orders and tried walking away from him WRONG MOVE!!!! Her walking away from him is what was getting her arrested.

That officer showed a lot of restraint. The 17 year old "little girl" was bigger than him and was trying to help the other one get away that is clearly shown on the video. She put her hands on him first and pushed him first. A lady is only a lady until she decides the throw down first.(by the way I am a woman and stronly believe that)

It might have taken him awhile to put the cuffs on her but that is only because he was trying to do it without injuring her. Had either one of them been MEN they would have been shot.

Neither one of them conducted themselves as women or ladies. They were physically resisting trying to get away and the forced that was used was justified and he could have used more force with the first girl had he wanted to. He chose not to use more force probably because she was a female.

He showed more professionalism than most cops I have seen. He does not deserve a reprimand of any sort. Let put it this way had that cop punched my daughter and saw that video I would be pissed. My daughter would have to pick her teeth up by the time I was done with her and I would get with the cheif to apologise for my childs actions. Unfortunitally we live in a society where children have no accountability for thier actions.

Had they listened to him from the beginning they would have been arrested or punched. doesn't get any simplier than that.

A) The cop was in a dangerous situation once things started escalating. Why would he bring his detainee down to the ground and leave his back exposed and himself in a vulnerable position? By trying to cuff her while still standing gives him total view of his situation. The cop acted professionally.

B) This is a jaywalking incident. Why is this girl acting so crazy? If she had just said sorry instead of mouthing off and disobeying a police officer, she probably would've been let off with a warning. And her girlfriend should've stood by. The woman being arrested first should be charged with a hate crime since she was yelling racial slurs.

C) Jaywalking is a major problem in cities and tourist areas and how lazy can one be not to climb the stairs and use the overpass?

D) The use of mace is only when one knows the direction with which it will blow and if it's a safe enough distance from the user's face/body. 1) The girl in pink was too close to him and the other woman and 2) He didn't have time to grab for his mace.

E) Again,. the cop is in a dangerous situation. A crowd has formed, he's struggling with two women now - one who is attacking him and the other resisting arrest, and backup has yet to arrive. Use of force is allowed in this situation where the cop is threatened and must protect himself from an attacker.

F) I'm glad this video came out

In Seattle and other cities, a lot of young kids brazenly j-walk, daring motorists to hit them. It's a big problem. They know it's illegal. They know it's dangerous. They do it to antagonize the motorists. They are stupid that way.

If a police officer would tell me to step over to his car, I would step over to his car. I would not try to wrestle him, then tell him to 'get the f*** off of me'. His job is to stop the j-walking. All of the kids involved in this incident should be fined. If they believe they can overpower a police officer and get away with it, they should go to jail - period.

Playing a game of dare-you-to-hit-me with motorists or a police officer is a dangerous game.
When you lose, don't complain.
120
J-walking is a game of I-dare-you-to-hit-me a lot of kids in Seattle (and other cities) play. Wrestling with a police officer is another game of I-dare-you-to-hit-me.

When you lose the game and someone hits you, don't complain and pretend you are a victim.
121
"OMG how could he have punched a teenage girl in her face?? Why was he having such a hard time subduing her?" All men are huge and strong and all girls (especially teenage girls) are weak and under 100 pounds, right? Clearly, he could have picked up both girls, thrown them over each shoulder, and tossed them into the car, right? He must not be a 'real man.'

Watch the video and stop listening to the hot-button paternalistic buzzwords.

The real issue, though, is would he have done the same to some fussy white chick who was resisting arrest? Not sure...
122
To the person asking why she wasn't read her MIranda rights:

BEACUSE THE COP HAD BEEN UNABLE TO ARREST HER. DUH. YOU DIDN'T NOTICE THAT? That usually happends AFTER you have been handcuffed, not while you are beating the cops
123
Both young women have criminal records. One has pushed an officer before. They are both menaces to society and if they don't change their delusional ways they will end up in prison or dead eventually.
124
That cop absolutely did not lose his cool. This video is very different than the video of that racist cop kicking the hispanic suspect in the face and then taunting him. Difference being, there isn't a cauldron of police officers standing idly by watching it happen. This was a police officer issuing a ticket for jaywalking and then being confronted with two females, including the one who was to be issued the original citation, resisting the officer and being physical. Not to mention that while trying to issue said citation, he is surrounded by passersby who are more concerned about filming a potential "cop loses his mind and beats down on two young black females because he's a racist" youtube clip, than telling said black females to stop resisting a police officer and comply. I don't always agree with what the police do, but I sure do know when to keep my hands off of them.
125
Of course they will use the RACECARD, But the Officer did his job.
If she got hit by a car or what ever and they saw a Officer sitting then they would have said he should have did something to her for crossing the street not in a cross walk,so what is an Officer to do .
Dam if you do Dam if you don't.
I have a idea why don't you listen to the Officer in a calm way and not act like a animal, and don't put your hands on the Officer and maybe he would have just told you to use the crosswalk and let you go.
If you can do better ,then try to be an Officer because you wouldn't last a hour.
If this DUMB broad get a dime , it should go to charity not her, stop the free rides on taxpayers.
126
the girls were assulting the officer, verbally as well as physically, He acted totally appropriately. The girls shows no respect for the police and deserved it. They should be charged with assult of an officer.
127
Police brutality? No. This guy is clearly not a brutal guy. If anything he strikes me as too nice.

Obvious:

1. It doesn't matter what the original issue was - as soon as you escalate a confrontation with the police to physical or even verbal resistance, you have changed the nature of the confrontation.

2. These girls were not very clever by anybody's standards. How many people would start verbally assaulting a cop that has stopped them for a traffic violation? How many people would walk away from a cop that has asked them to stop walking away? Ever hear of "resisting arrest?"

3. No one in this forum could have done a better job keeping their cool in this unfortunate and unbelievably stressful situation. This guy was clearly going way out of his way to keep the physical violence to an absolute minimum. I would have to assume that 90% of all cops would have had a more brutal response at any point in that confrontation.

4. That punch to the face was very, very restrained by any measure. This guy was acting like a pussy cat. Obviously hostile crowd, girl #1 resisting arrest and girl number two gets tries to physically interfere... with a cop?! What in the world would you do... run away? Put up a sign that says physically assaulting a cop is OK if the crowd is big enough?

Really folks... spend your time investing in Seattle's school systems to help these folks deal with this world in a more successful fashion. These girls are clearly not going to have an easy go of it with the environment we've created for them so far...

Seattle cops are pretty damn good compared to some of the cop cultures elsewhere in this country. Give this guy a pat on the back and let him get on with his job. Clearly a good guy in this story.
128
This Country has gotting way out of hand,We spend so much time on DUMB CRAP like this that the real I'm talking real Bullshit like our Gov't and Big Companys are draining our pockets.
They distract you with garbage like that and then they come in and give you a Beaten, til you lose everything!!!!
I agree we have crooked Police but 99% of the Law Enforcement is outstanding 1% are ASSHOLES and they come in all colors not one.
But 99% of good Officers, there hands are tied because of Big Gov't and won't let them do there job.
And if we didn't have people like these two girls and 17 yearold teens are not children they know what they are doing, these girls would have never been in the news. The way this Country is ran the people who commit crime get the free ride and our hard earn tax money.WAKEUP
129
This cop needs more training, strength training that is. Inter personal skills wouldn't hurt either. Poorly trained cops tend to get into these type of situations.

WTF jaywalking......let's get some real criminals please

130
@ 118 - it's not a hate crime because the young woman said the word n*%&% to a white police officer. That doesn't even make sense.

Many of the posts have talked about how easy and simple it is to take the elevated crosswalk. Well, yes and no. We're all people, and we all look for the easiest ways to do things. Do I jaywalk across Rainier to save walking half a block in the rain (okay, even when it's sunny sometimes)? If I feel like it, sure. Clearly the elevated crosswalk was meant to solve a problem that it's not solving. A more pedestrian-friendly Rainier/MLK stretch would be a great investment (all those billions on the tunnel, perhaps?). Anyway, it's silly to give $60 jaywalking tickets to youth outside of their school. Does it look like racism and social inequity when the students who receive tickets are youth of color? Yes. Do many youth from Ballard High receive jaywalking tickets outside their school?

I'm also interested in the fact that many of the youth knew this particular officer--you can hear them saying his last name in the background, "Walsh, Walsh, no, you don't need to do that." He knows some of these kids; it's not a threatening environment; he's not afraid they're going to jump him. He's being scrutinized, sure, with camera phones and such, but I agree with another poster who said that the officer was very much scared of losing face, so had to exert authority. Any teacher can tell you that avoiding power struggles is the key to success; this officer obviously doesn't know this.
131
I feel the children are not taught to respect the law. They should know the police are there to protect them, which is what this officer was trying to do. He was right and they were wrong.

132
First off - the video shown above doesn't show what occurred before the scene got intense. Any person who thinks they can just walk away from a police officer's orders is an idiot.

When you are under arrest you either submit or resist. Resistance carries consequences - often physical ones.
133
Great job Officer! Such desrespect for authority is all too common these days. Its a shame kids have none anymore. I thought the officer handled it very well, I personally would have expected him to used much more force much sooner. He left himself at risk for far to long while letting the little brats get away with a ton of violations.

Again, this officer should be commended for a job well done!
134
the little punk got just what she deserved ! the cop showed more retraint than he needed to ! Good to see SPD is cleaning up the trash !
135
I think the officer handled the situation well. The other lady had no business shoving the officer away and obstructing justice.
136
I think the officer handled the situation appropriately.

    Please wait...
