It's Time to Get Excited About Waterfront Development (Even Though Dirt Won't Be Flying for Years Yet)

Mayor announces "Operation Stymie This" in 3..2..1..

I'm already in my early 40s, so I won't live to see this project greenlit and completed.

NINE ACRE CHIHULY MUSEUM!!!!!!!!!!!

This is exactly how shitty development gets done. It's going to be horrible. It's going to be a fucking park. It's going to be fucking empty. It's going to be next to an increasingly empty downtown.

Fnarf, I agree with you that such a thing as you envision would be awful - emptiness dotted with clumps of stocky tourists offloaded from cruise ships tottering with their rollaways down the paths - but the process being outlined isn't "let's build a big empty swath on purpose" but "let's begin deciding what it should be".

So for what it's worth, making it not be empty, devoid of shops and cool things, is something people can start now to put forward.

But probably nothing can come of this in any case. Since this project is to move forward on figuring out what to do aboveground once there's a tunnel, it's been put on the Mayor's list of Evil Things and will be fought to the death.

I would be happy to talk about possibilities for opening up the waterfront...

.. After a new South Park Bridge is built.

at least there is this; when they nix my nude bocce ball dog run beach plan in lieu of a playground for the residents of the overpriced condos my retort will no doubt be:

"You don't understand. I could'a had class. I could'a been a contender".

cool.

I can't even begin to imagine how annoying those community meetings would be. Every self-imagined brainiac in a city full of self-imagined brainiacs will show up to their Their Big Thoughts and namedrop about all the places they've been to.

I rather sit through a "Jersey Shore" marathon.

Got the money for this?

Not if the Billionaires Tunnel is built - they'll suck the money for the cost overruns out of the "park" areas.
10
@8: I <3 you, Catalina, you big ol' public employee you.
11
Wow Will with a billionaires tunnel reference. Didn't see that coming.

@8, when we were in Gstaad to welcome Princess Winkie Thurn-und-Taxis home from rehab last winter the streets were lined with furriers. We should make it like that, dahling.

@5, there will be absolutely no commercial uses whatsoever. A public meeting will guarantee that. It's going to be the least urban place you could possibly imagine.

I have an idea:

ERECT A NEW FUCKING VIADUCT, FAGGOTS.

Whatever we end up with, it won't be that interesting or attractive. When it comes to public spaces, Seattle excels at mediocrity.
