Dream on. At least this one child will have a fighting chance.

It seems they usually catch this stuff only after the child is dead, so this is fantastic news. I just hope granting the state temporay custody doesn't mean the child will go right back into the arms of their unfit parents once their treated. I hope the state can find some fit/not crazy religious family to take care of them, cuz this will olny happen again if they don't. They crazy religious parents that do kill their children this way hardly if ever concede they were wrong.

Good Morning Charles,
I agree that endangering the welfare or health of a child because of proscriptions against using conventional medicine to treat that child is morally unacceptable and repugnant. I believe Christian Scientists among others have had an issue with that since its founding by Mary Baker Eddy in the 19th century.

On the other hand, I do not want the "state to impose on all levels of life the rule of reason". "Reason" can be relative. When I visited Russia, I found out during the Soviet era that there was a state recognized church, The Orthodox Church that was only approved by the Central Committee even though the state was ostensibly athiest.

I understand your point though. I do believe "reason" should be benign and human behavior should benefit. But, one of the reasons we have religion (only one of your subjects mentioned) is because of reason. It,too alters human behavior for better or for worse. I just have great reservations about the state dictating too much given what happened in the Soviet Union especially under Stalin.

At one time it was reasonable to believe the earth was flat. Sure, many of us often cling to ideology long past its expiration date but that is part of the peril of being a human with limited perspective.
8
This is about human rights, not about mandating reason. Children are humans with the right to life, freedom, and happiness. Many bad parents consider children to be property and deny them life, freedom, or happiness.

I think from the comments, it might be fairly safe to say that no one who made a comment has experienced a healing through prayer. Having five generations of Christian Scientists in my family who have all experienced spiritual healing by relying upon God, maybe you can begin to understand why we choose this form of healing. One example from quite awhile ago: during the flu pandemic of the early 1900's when thousands of people were dying from the flu, my grandmother, who had 6 children all suffering from the flu, and who knew nothing about Christian Science went to a Christian Science practitioner she heard of. She and all 6 children were healed overnight of all flu symptoms - no wonder our family stayed with this effective method of healing.

@9: Now we've got medicine, you ignorant twerp. Faith healing may have been fine in 1918 because science had nothing to offer; hell, we didn't even have penicillin, and sulfa drugs were all the newfangled medical rage.
Faith healing is all good and dandy; what ISN'T okay is excluding medicine from consideration because of your primitive and medieval beliefs. (Side note: I believe in God, but I prefer to ask for help from Him only as the very last resort; I don't rely on help from above.)
TL;DR version: faith healing is fine. A medicine is fine too.

Am I the only jerk in here that thinks it may just be better to let this offspring "faith heal?" It's called natural selection, and if you're that big of an idiot, maybe you shouldn't survive.

Please wait...

and remember to be decent to everyone
all of the time.
