Not a problem Charles, they have pools to swim in. No need for the ocean. On second thought all that slippery oil could lead to increased homo-erotic action (I slipped and my mouth landed on his penis), better clean it up quickly.
2
But the oil spill was caused by god to punish us for allowing gay sex and gay marriage.
3
Charles! Has Dan Savage been giving you posting lessons? I had to look twice at the "posted by" name cuz it sounded like something Dan would write.

Alabama . . . God, it was a complete wasteland even before the leak. I mean, who cares?
5
Keep voting for Republicants and we'll all be Alabama.
6
This oil spill could not have happened to a nicer part of the country.

Vote Republican for decades upon decades and I guess this is your reward.
7
am i the only one who thinks the oil in that picture looks like an angry elephant?
8
Really, Charles? The Matrix?
9
Sumerian @8: actually, the "desert of the real" line in the Matrix was lifted from Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, which I presume Charles has read as well.

Again, this is the primary argument made by Thomas Frank in "What's The Matter With Kansas"--that "hot-button" social issues cause white working + middle class voters to vote against their economic interests, largely because of our inability to reckon with class directly.

Frank goes farther to say that this dynamic was made possible by the Democrats retreat from economic populism. I think this was more true under Clinton than under Obama.

@9, thank you.

You tell 'em!!

I never knew Alabama had ocean-front high rises like that. Makes sense, and now I know.

Teh gayz are gonna use that oil for lube, you know. And then we'll have a plague of buttsecks across the south. Oh, horrors!
15
@13, and surprisingly affordable they are, too. Now.

Spectacle has always trumped reality.

Please wait...
