Of course they want him to veto it. I'll bet they're using the "slippery slope" arguement.
2
With the economy in the dumps, you'd think they would want to use this to encourage honeymoons in Hawaii. But Republicans are nothing if they aren't idealogues.
3
They're just afraid you're all going to marry their dolphins.
4
I thought Obama opposed marriage rights for gays, but supported civil unions? Not everyone adheres to that statement.

Nevertheless, we need to stop talking about gay marriage. We need to simply talk about marriage. People. should. be. allowed. to. marry. whom. they. choose.

#4 sums the matter up.

@3 - You know that dolphins are just gay sharks, right?

Maybe I'm being willfully dense here, but as I don't live in the States and hear the *message* from conservatives 24/7, what is their main objection? Is it primarily that the bible "sez so," or is it that more nebulous concept that same-sex marriage will somehow affect/denigrate straight marriage? If it's the latter, where do they get their evidence? I mean, you'd think they'd look at the countries that do allow same-sex marriage, and point out their high crime rate, their crumbling health care, their tanking economies, etc. as proof that this is what happens when anyone can marry. Seriously, how do they get people to listen and agree when there are so many examples in other countries that prove their argument is invalid?

@7 Logic has nothing to do with it. It's almost exclusively religious and that --by it's nature-- is illogical.
9
@7 - "ewww butt sex is gross!" -- if it isn't a religious argument.

@7
For them, there is no need to look at other countries, because they aren't America. All foreigners are so different from Americans that nothing in their countries or cultures could possibly apply here.

In addition, having bought into the story that the gay agenda is to destroy marriage, family, and society, countries that allow marriage equality have simply demonstrably already fallen, requiring even more effort to protect America.

Or something.

The governor is a Republican Jewish woman (in Hawaii).

Apparently, though, this hasn't caused her to know anything about being a minority or to have any empathy or compassion.

...i have a serious question.
it doesnt necessarily have to do with this post, but it sort of does... it does have to do with equal marriage rights.

personally, if i wanted to 'marry' a woman (and i have thought i did several times...), i think i would be happy with just the same rights as heteros that wanted to marry their partners. i wouldnt care what its called as long as the privileges were the same.

so, are conservatives fighting for homos to not have the same rights or are they just fighting for the word marriage?? most arguments i hear are of the 'marriage is between a man and a woman' nature...so, keep 'marriage' and just name homo unions something else. would any other homo be okay with the same rights but a different word for what they are doing?

maybe im being too literal...

my gut is telling me it will pass. my brain is saying otherwise.

Cunning Lingle should do the right thing...

15
@7 - Their arguement is that they don't like us.
16
Ooops! I meant ideologues! me bad.
17
@ 7- I have heard the decreasing birth rates of Europe used as an argument to maintaining marriage inequality, because gays can't reproduce and therefore fail at providing proper role models for procreation and the family. The person(s) of LC loved to cite it. I do believe that so called religious justification and the ick factor is what really lies beneath it all. And, at the bottom is greed and the need to believe that one is superior.

@4

Thank you for using the proper case for "whom". That warms the inside of my English-major heart.
19
Thanks, all. I grew up there, I should remember that whole "we do it better than anyone else, why would we want to be like them?" thing...it's easy to forget, sometimes. It's heartbreaking, all around, but then I'm again stating the obvious.
20
@12: Do you think that blacks should have been perfectly happy to have their own water fountains, train cars, and bathrooms? Separate but equal? You really think that's a good solution?
21
How did Hawaii, a very, very, very, very Democratic state, ever get a Republican governor?
22
Massachusetts, a very, very, very Democratic state, has had more than its fair share of Republican governors too. Go figure.
23
Their Republicans are not your Republicans, that's why.

Basically.
24
Just heard. It was vetoed.
25
@18. You're welcome. Subject/object propriety is important in the bedroom, and in the vernacular.

Please wait...
