Now, please have the box removed. I don't want to see Mailbox Peak become a junkyard where everybody and their brother tries to haul up something heavy and leave it there, even if it is for the lolz. What's next, a fridge? A TV?
I'm kind of with @5 and @6. It's cool that someone did this, but hopefully whoever brought it up there eventually takes it down (leave no trace, right?).
Funny! Could someone haul a waterproof couch up there next? And a solar-powered fridge stocked with beers? When I get to the top my dogs are tired, all I really need is a good sit-down and a crisp cold one. I promise to leave as many beers as I take. It'll be nice to curl up with the paper now too, thanks!
1500 ft gain per mile, that's steep to me. I bet the view is lovely.
The highest I've climbed at present is ~10,500 ft and it was steep, perhaps, not this steep, though. It's a funny prank, it would be sad if people started dumping garbage at the top of trails.
Kim, the view is lovely once you emerge from the trees and spot the mailbox, but then you get up there without the muffling of the trees and hear something you weren't expecting and you turn around and there's I-90 down there, piping its traffic noise up at you. Definite sonic letdown, but that's a day hike for you sometimes.
I've done the Grand Canyon twice from the South Rim, one trip was to get down to my raft and I took the river to flippin' Hoover Dam, though. The other was an up and back in the same day beast. I don't know what the hell we were thinking, it reached 112 degrees F that day, but we were smart and started in the wee small hours of the morning and utilized shade well. One of these days I'm going to start at the North Rim and exit via the South Rim.
Hiking out of the Grand Canyon in the early hours is key. We left the bottom around 3am and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Still freakin' hot, though -- thank god for that creek. Got to the top and inhaled the biggest pizza we could find. I'd love to do it again.
The Colorado has a ranking system all its own (1-10). One of my personal favorites is Lava Falls, class 10, 30 foot altitude drop, huge bowel and monster V waves. I did a 6 person paddle raft. This is Lava Falls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWLsNxgR_… and this is Upset Rapid and very aptly named: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmAKf0M3R…
By the way, the wildlife along the river is amazing too.
this is not garbage, it is playful art. there is a difference which i think we can all understand. leave no trace can be taken dogmatically, or it can be used flexibly, with exceptions made for creative works that most people will appreciate.
I was on the summit of Mailbox Peak Saturday 7/10/2010, and the box was stocked with plenty of the current weeks Stranger......who the hell took on that paper route?!?!?

Gus,
Thanks for the heads up.
Rafting out would be INSANE!
Rafting out is awesome, I recommend it highly.
