ding, ding, ding! Sissy

that last one is a common occurrence among the older generations. my grandmother was sister (though in her older years it was shortened to sue), my great uncle was uncle brud, short for brother, and my neighbor who is only now in her 60's was sister or sissy.

i think it never hit me before that word was the same as a commonly used pejorative, so it's strange to see all the examples together.

Looks like someone got their "sissy" Google Alert this morning.
4
One of my favorite words - you interviewed me on the sissy episode of This American Life...:)

Hasn't it been a really long time since "sissy" meant gay? I hear "weak/timid/powerless" (or "sister"). There's probably a sexist connection there, but I don't think that's what you were getting at.

Hey, why not? The White House has already demonstrated that spreading childish accusations about them is a good way to get them to do what you want. Maybe calling them "sissy" will scare them into stand up to Republicans more forcefully. If conservatives are going to do it to great effect, then why shouldn't liberals?
7
eh, I need to read things more carefully.

Yay! Sissies unite!

"They must have a war room at the White House. I think they've got a folker room too," Schultz said. "I didn't vote for that."

Some part of this subgenre’s popularity is surely due to the catchily discordant name by which it has become known: folker bounce. The term is problematic, because the artists themselves do not care for it at all—not because they object to the word “folker” but because they consider it disrespectful to bounce music.

His following is devoted. “He can play the folker, and he can also be macho,” says English teacher Liu Shuan, 38.

Watch out when you see Sarah Kaufman getting her hair braided. It can only mean one thing—she's getting ready for a fight. But don't expect a folkerin' cat fight—Kaufman is the current women's welterweight world champion in mixed martial arts.

Helen "Folker" L. Delehanty (nee Sissy), 81, passed on to eternal life surrounded by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren on July 9.

@9: Ha! :)

Here's another...

"Manny Pacquiao has a lawsuit against the Mayweather family for defamation and slander over steroid allegations but that didn’t stop Floyd Mayweather’s father from insulting the humble Filipino champion, Manny Pacquiao.

A disrespectful Floyd Mayweather Sr. in an interview with ontheropesboxingradio.com told the host he would tell Manny Pacquiao that “he is a F@ggot, go stick your head up under your dress, you’re nothing but a little sissy a little girl”

Floyd Sr. then takes out a book titled “20 biggest bitches in the sport” and said Manny Pacquiao is in the book and that Pacquiao is a bitch."

Here's the audio from his radio interview. Funny that Mayweather Sr. seems to overlook his son's nickname: Pretty Boy Floyd.
