I'm always surprised to be reminded how relatively few people watch cable news of any kind. Or television news of any kind, for that matter. Not that I blame them.
Fox News has a 2.102 million total viewer audience.
MSNBC has a 751,000 total viewer audience.
CNN has a 648,000 total viewer audience.
Fox may not be winning in the highly coveted "people who drink malt liquor" demographic. But it seems to be kicking ass in the larger "people who don't drink malt liquor" demo.
I wonder how many white viewers get their news from Wendy Williams over at BET?...
Seattle's population includes 8.4 percent who identified themselves as African American or black; another 1.4 percent selected black in combination with one or more other races. The proportions of the populations of King County and Washington State that are black are smaller than Seattle's at 5.4 percent and 3.2 percent respectively. Twelve percent of the U.S. population is black. People who chose black or African American as well as one or more other races to describe themselves accounted for another 1.1 percent of King County, 0.8 percent of Washington State, and 0.6 percent of the US population.
@24: Chicagoan here. I go to school and work on the South Side, in neighborhoods that are almost entirely black. My liberal views are only strengthened by what I see around me.
You racist ass.
Dan,
This stat (regarding FOX News viewers, whatever their racial preference) and comment are irrelevant to me. I believe a far more important question is: What percentage of Americans (collectively or by racial category) READ their news? I don't watch FOX, CNN or even Rachel Maddow. But, I can read a wide array of media from the NYT to National Review to the Nation and believe I can discern and absorb far more info and opinion than any televised news. I just think Americans need to watch less TV media and read more. It would benefit their information gathering and expand their vocabulary.
Look, people don't watch [insert cable news network here] because they're interested in undestanding the world - they watch [iccnh] so that their preconceived notions are reinforced. They watch to see whoever the yammering head is, say, "Yes! You're right!"
Is it any wonder that Black Americans don't want to watch a show that keeps telling them how crappy they are? Or that white guys who are used to being atop the world DO want to watch that?
I have to wonder what the Wayne brothers from 'In Living Color' and Arsenio Hall think of Fox now. Those brothers made Fox great ( them and the yellow skinned Simpsons).
hey i would watch fox news if they werent total fucking douche bags. the experience of watching fox news is like having bill orielley sit on your face and fart while sean hannity repeatedly punches you in the nuts while glenn beck screams and cries and some fake bitch is applying runny makeup in front of a 4000 watt mirror. i can handle different opinions if they aren't presented so fucking terribly its torture.
@12, I see plenty of places selling malt liquor in Whatcom County. I think the people buying it are low income whites wanting more bang for their buck, not the less than 1% of the population that's of African descent.
@33: LOLWUT?
@42: You mean "bimbos"? I'd rather watch an ugly woman explain cool shit than watch a supermodel blither about nothing at all. And I'm straight as a beeline.
News really isn't fapping material.
@41, oh bullshit. you comment on a story about how a small pct of african-americans watch fox news and then bring up how fox is losing the "malt liquor" demographic and contrast it to people who watch BET. it's pretty clear how you view black people.
Actually, while my comment acknowledges the fact that malt liquor drinkers are disproportionally black, (according to the Institute on Black Chemical Abuse, African Americans consume one-third of all malt liquor although they constitute only 12% of the population (Marin Institute, 1994).), it assumes that most other malt liquor drinkers (for instance Commenter # 36) also shun FOX.
My reference to Wendy Williams (and BET) is partly in response to the main thrust of the story (Gee! Different races watch different programming! Who woulda thunk it!?) but is primarily meant to draw attention to the folly of relying on the criticism of a network's content from people who admittedly don’t watch that network.
In other words, not being a BET watcher (who happens to be white) I am about as qualified to comment on the “newsworthiness” (or racism) of BET’s programming as a person who does not watch FOX (who happens to be black) is to comment on the “racism” (or newsworthiness) of FOX’s programming.
Wendy Williams (not a news program) is a veiled dig on my part meant to illuminate the fact that BET has no news programming, and highlight the obvious lack of importance that the Black community (That is BET’s target audience? Right?) places on broadcast news (for whatever reason), and to perhaps further draw into question why anyone would care who’s news blacks do or do not watch.
It seems rather like asking which ham kosher Jews prefer to eat with their shrimp and oysters.
Failing to tailor your product to appeal to a demographic is not prejudice. Neither is doing so. It is not in the least bit surprising that the greater a product appeals to one demographic, let’s say “people who don’t drink malt liquor”, the lesser the appeal of that same product to other demographics, like the one to which commenter #36 belongs. The fact that commenter #36’s demographic includes a disproportionate number of blacks may be strictly coincidental (or might not be) but their lack of interest in FOX’s news product is not informative or relevant.
@46, so because BET doesn't have broadcast news, black people don't care about news? does that mean because CMT doesn't have news, white rural people don't care about news? ESPN doesn't have broadcast news; does that mean sports fans don't care about news?
to summarize your argument - black people sit around drinking malt liquor, watching wendy williams, and not caring about what goes on in the world. awesome.
actually, 46, let's play this your way. Logo doesn't have a broadcast news program. Therefore gay people don't care about news. Instead, they sit around all day watching RuPaul's Drag Race. The real story isn't that FOX is losing the "people who have anal sex" demographic; it's that it's kicking ass in the "people who don't have anal sex" demographic.
Doesn't that come off as a little ignorant? Buying into easy stereotypes? Reducing a group of people into being defined by one characteristic that they don't all share (and that is applicable to people outside the group)? Or is that cool with you, too?
As @ 13 points out, we're talking about a demo that includes 1% of the pop. It's a very small demo indeed. Possibly gays, sports fans and malt liquor drinkers (including the black ones) are in the 99% that don't get thier news on TV. Geeesh... Yer all soooo toucheeee....
Either way, is it ligitimate to judge a program based on the opinions of people who do not view it? Or a publication based on the opinions of people who do not read it? If who is not reading, watching or listening says more than who is, that's screwed.
From the article "List of 2008 homicides in Seattle" from the Seattle PI
selected from the list of the 28 Seattle homicides in 2008....
Allen Joplin, Jan. 4 -- black killed by black
De'Che Morrison, Jan. 10 -- black killed by black
Maurice "Moe" Allen Jr., Jan. 26 -- black killed by black
Degene Barecha, Jan. 30 -- black killed by black
Perry Henderson, Feb. 6 -- black killed by black
Stephan Dwaine Stewart, April 2 -- black killed by black
Eldora Earlycutt, July 4 -- black killed by black
James Paroline, July 10 -- white killed by black
Troy Peters, July 22 -- black killed by black
Pierre Lapoint, Aug. 5 -- black killed by black
Jane Kariuki, Oct. 16 -- woman of unknown race killed by black man named Christel D. Murphy
Quincy S. Coleman, Oct. 31 -- black killed by black
Edward McMichael, the "Tuba Man", Nov. 3 -- white killed by multiple blacks
Nathaniel Lee Thomas, Nov. 23 -- black killed by black
So by my count blacks (8% of Seattle) were the killers in at least half (that's at least 50%) of the murders in the Seattle area in 2008. At least five of the other murderers were latinos.
The link above is to the Seattle PI's article on homicides in Seattle in 2009.
By my count at least twelve of the 21 murders in Seattle in 2009 were committed by blacks, who in total make up only 8% of Seattle.
GUESS WHAT! 2010 is going to turn out JUST AS BAD OR WORSE.
Bottom line:
Black "crime-prone age" males (ages 14 - 45) make up less than 3% of Seattle (remember Seattle is only 8% black) but over half of the murders in Seattle every year are committed by blacks.
If Fox News gets such high viewership, how can it claim it's not the mainstream media? You can't simultaneously boast that you're #1 while also claiming that you're the underdog.
Fox News has a 2.102 million total viewer audience.
MSNBC has a 751,000 total viewer audience.
CNN has a 648,000 total viewer audience.

the 75% bastard rate is also fucking brilliant
HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK COCKS!
Seattle has lower percent of blacks than U.S.

Well, that's why it's so easy to be a liberal here, especially one the Great White North.
Of course, if Seattle were blacker, than maybe they'd film episodes of my fav black comedy here, 'The First 48'.
You racist ass.

And Wallpaper.
Tangent alert!
For the last couple of years in Seattle, every time a white police officer is killed, they are killed by BLACK MEN.
Check out the reality of your city, you embarrassingly earnest, naive, libtarded bleeding-heart white Seattle dipshits:
