"The moral of this black-and-white tale, she explained, was that Chief Diaz was willing to reach out to every community but the black community."

bs. She expects 100000000% more "reaching out" than anyone else.
"Walden testified that after the recent videotaped incident of a police officer punching a black teenager, Police Chief Diaz "didn't come to us at all."

no reason he should have. The chief would not have come to the white community to explain why a cop defended himself from a violent white female criminal.

"I'm sure he has done a good job in a lot of ways... but he doesn't speak with the African American community."

who does? Perhaps it's your "community's" it's-all-about-me mentality is the problem.

"Many critics cited the punching incident—and Diaz's lack of public comment or apology to black communities afterward—as the focus of their outrage."

Nothing to apologize for. He wouldn't have apologized if it was a white teenage male who was punched. She was treated the same as if she were white or male. As it should.

"The reason we're here is we want justice," apologies, and answers, testified Milford Muhammad. "The community continues to grow in their outrage. We are not satisfied with your response."

This woman is with Nation of Islam. They are a hate group. She won't ceased being outraged or satisifed until the government gives them the same rights the KKK had in 1930's Mississippi.

"Every time a black man is killed, they say 'we need more training,'" said Charles Oliver"

And what do you say everytime a cop is killed by a black male Charles?
Also, don't make it sound like all fatality by cops of black men are not legit self defense.
Also, there are times when white men have been unnecessarily killed by the police and they say the same thing. Apparently that isn't a problem though.

these guys in the photos are carrying signs saying "black women shall be protected" and "women are not to be punched".
Guess what geniuses but 99.999999% of black women who are punched are punched by black men.
Also these women were being protected- they were doing something dangerous, jaywalking on a busy intersection

oh man, this is annoying. on the one hand i understand. this recent punching incident isn't really the issue so much as an excuse to redress a cumulative problem: the african american community's feeling, legit or not, of being marginalized by the city of seattle. i think that's a fair debate to have, and the discussion is productive in and of itself really.

but on the other hand, the incident in question is so grossly one sided that all credibility is immediately sapped from the african american side of the issue. the girl who got punched was physically interfering with a police officer in the line of duty, an officer who was alone and surrounded by hounding by-standers. she's lucky she didn't get maced, clubbed, or even worse. she was completely in the wrong. so why would anyone expect the police department to apologize or even acknowledge a measured and appropriate use of force by an officer in a potentially dangerous situation?

the bottom line is that if the african american community wants to be addressed collectively over incidents such as this, then the community needs to in turn account for why it's teenagers seem to feel entitled to act so unreasonably and unlawfully, along with the cultural factors that produce such behavior. a little personal accountability basically. otherwise it just feels to everyone else that the african american community want special treatment while making no effort to meet the city half way. it looks like a case of playing the victim even if you're wrong, which is unattractive and unfair to everyone else (see jane doe's comments above).

Lack of perception of respect of the black community is the root of SPD's problem.

If you don't get that basic fact, you aren't dealing with african americans, you just think that you are ...

Yeah, this is disappointing that a) the leaders of the 'black community' (they're not that, they just represent a portion of the people) seem almost immature here--immature, is that the word to use? and b) that they're using the punching incident as a focal point to seek redress of their legitimate grievances. The officer in question was not guilty of excessive force in trying to fend off people who were resisting arrest, which was originally just a fucking ticket or warning. I wish they would have focused more on the targeted, institutional racism of busting low-volume crack dealers and homeless people downtown, prostitutes on Aurora. Not to mention busting gay clubs/bars, etc. All at the expense of preventing major/violent crime.
7
6 - also, I should say that hiring somebody in the department really doesn't represent change we can believe in
8
Thanks for trying to get across the breadth of events at the hearing. Though your writing "Mothers of Police Accountability" calls Zappa to mind which is never a bad thing, Rev. Walden is with Mothers for Police Accountability.

"Every time a black man is killed", the black man is almost always killed by ANOTHER BLACK MAN.

For the last couple of years in Seattle, every time a white police officer is killed, they are killed by BLACK MEN.

Check out the reality of your city, you embarrassingly earnest, naive, libtarded bleeding-heart white Seattle dipshits:

From the article "List of 2008 homicides in Seattle" from the Seattle PI

selected from the list of the 28 Seattle homicides in 2008....

Allen Joplin, Jan. 4 -- black killed by black

De'Che Morrison, Jan. 10 -- black killed by black

Maurice "Moe" Allen Jr., Jan. 26 -- black killed by black

Degene Barecha, Jan. 30 -- black killed by black

Perry Henderson, Feb. 6 -- black killed by black

Stephan Dwaine Stewart, April 2 -- black killed by black

Eldora Earlycutt, July 4 -- black killed by black

James Paroline, July 10 -- white killed by black

Troy Peters, July 22 -- black killed by black

Pierre Lapoint, Aug. 5 -- black killed by black

Jane Kariuki, Oct. 16 -- woman of unknown race killed by black man named Christel D. Murphy

Quincy S. Coleman, Oct. 31 -- black killed by black

Edward McMichael, the "Tuba Man", Nov. 3 -- white killed by multiple blacks

Nathaniel Lee Thomas, Nov. 23 -- black killed by black

So by my count blacks (8% of Seattle) were the killers in at least half (that's at least 50%) of the murders in the Seattle area in 2008. At least five of the other murderers were latinos.

Now let's take a look at 2009!:

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/413827_ho…
http://tinyurl.com/2aa88vd

The link above is to the Seattle PI's article on homicides in Seattle in 2009.

By my count at least twelve of the 21 murders in Seattle in 2009 were committed by blacks, who in total make up only 8% of Seattle.

GUESS WHAT! 2010 is going to turn out JUST AS BAD OR WORSE.

Bottom line:

Black "crime-prone age" males (ages 14 - 45) make up less than 3% of Seattle (remember Seattle is only 8% black) but over half of the murders in Seattle every year are committed by blacks.

You want to meet some people who REALLY hate black people? Talk to some Somalis or Ethiopians; it's no wonder so many are moving out of the CD and  up to Greenwood and the Northside. My old Somali neighbor is still pissed he had only two choices on the census: black or African American.

Why is the city  being held accountable to a few extremists who insist on defending the minority of young black males  and their grandmother-enablers who commit a disproportionate amount of crime in this city?
11
"Lack of perception of respect of the black community"

Maybe if they started actually EARNING their "respek" instead of demanding something they don't deserve, they would actually get it.

Maybe if blacks stopped committing such an extremely disproportionate amount of violence, rapes, and murders, then humans would not be so "racist" towards them. Just a CRAY-ZEEEE thought!

Chris Rock got it right.....

13
According to the US Department of Justice, at least 94% of the roughly 8,000 blacks killed every year in the USA are killed by other blacks.
14
Evil white racists like me have absolutely no need to "oppress" blacks, or to "keep them down".

THEY DO AN AWESOME JOB OF THAT ALL BY THEMSELVES!!!! LOL @ BLACKS!!!!!!
15
When did Slog become the Seattle PI comment section?
16
This is ridiculous. I was always taught that, as a female, if I hit someone I can expect to be hit in return--even if that person has different genitals. It's equality of the sexes, yeah?

And I would assume that hitting a cop = beaten to a bloody pulp, regardless of race.
17
@4, tell it, brother. NO-body down with the Afro-Ams like Willie in Seattle. Fist bump.
18
@16 to be fair the girl that got punched didn't hit the officer, she grabbed him while he was already wrestling with someone else. but frankly, she got off really easy. i have a number of friends, all white i should mention, who've been treated way worse for doing that kind of shit, mostly during protest situations, but still it's just common knowledge that if you physically fuck with a cop you'll probably get physically fucked with back, ie, mace in the face or tasered or thrown on the ground, stuff like that. this is a really poor example of police conduct to get worked up over.
19
The punching incident? They want apologies for the PUNCHING INCIDENT???

Are we selecting a Chief of Police for Upisdownsville?

And seriously, in 30-whatever years in SPD, has anyone come forward with a beef against Diaz conduct personally?

20
Dear 9-14: You're not prejudiced at all. Go on looking down that tunnel. Just sit back, relax and pop a benzo.

Love, Seattle Libtard
21
Am I getting him confused with someone else or is Anwar Peace a well-known crank?
22
"Check out the reality of your city, you embarrassingly earnest, naive, libtarded bleeding-heart white Seattle dipshits:"

Why do you care so much about our city, racist troll? Not that I dispute you facts because I don't but I really want to know why you are so rabid over blacks in our city?
23
"I don't but I really want to know why you are so rabid over blacks in our city"

Exactly, you know it's all whitey's fault, with their white privilege and all. You need a reeducation.
24
@21
Indeed, Anwar Peace is a crank and news magnet:

http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/07/word…

He reminds a little of Omari Tahir-Garrett, the fellow who struck Mayor Paul Schell with a megaphone years ago. They're just attention whores.

BTW, I do believe Diaz is in as Chief of SPD. I think he has substantial support in all communities including the African-American community. @6 is correct. I don't believe the "leaders of the black community" that showed up and protested (especially the guys in the photo) at the Diaz hearing are representative of the sentiment of the AA community as a whole in Seattle.
25
There's black people in Seattle? Whereabouts?
26
@22 "I really want to know why you are so rabid over blacks in our city"

Do you always have such shitty reading comprehension?

Did you miss the part where black males make up less than 3% of Seattle's population, and that over half the murders here are committed by black males?

Racial profiling makes perfect sense. Anyone who disagrees is either black, or a reality-ignoring wimpy white bleeding-heart libtarded Seattle "progressive".
27
why does liberal enlightened seattle treat its blacks so shitty?

why are blacks in liberal enlightened seattle so oppressed?

you liberal enlightened seattleites put alabama to shame.....
28
Hey, where did all you NAIVE libtarded white Seattle "progressive" black-thug-ass-kissers go?

FACTS GOT YOUR TONGUE???? Ha ha ha!

Keep on being a wimpy white libtard who coddled black thugs. Black thugs will do their part and continue to commit fully half of all murders in Seattle.

Funny how you all think you are sooooo worldly-wise, when you are really just a bunch of sheltered, nauseatingly naive wimps living in one of the whitest cities in the USA.
29
@20 - "Go on looking down that tunnel."

Do you mean the bus tunnel, where blacks violently assault other blacks, while black "guards" stand by doing nothing but watching the fight?

IS THAT THE TUNNEL YOU MEAN????

Please wait...
