Tropic of Cancer was a tough read. I read it ten years ago and I still haven't decided if I like it or not.

Of course, NYC is WAY cleaner than it was in '75. Or '85.
3
Isn't this comment more germane to Tacoma?

Oh, great. A "drop dead" riff.

This one is pretty weak, Megan. It's about as good as pulling a "last one to leave Seattle, please turn off the lights" deep cut from YouTube in 1974.

great video. it is a shithole. though manhattan now is a playground for the rich, but its still a shithole. scary place as a kid.

I've only read The Air-Conditioned Nightmare but it was enough to not want to read anymore Miller. Dude hated the whole US, not just NYC.

What I liked best about this clip is that you don't hear people speaking their mind so bluntly anymore—everyone is so self-censored today. Can you imagine if this clip was filmed today? Every news outlet in the world would be playing it and berating him as a traitor. I love that he could say all that back then.

A year or two ago I visited my parents in South Ozone Park Queens just after they had a week of plus 100 temperatures.

Up the Van Wyck and over the Whitestone to Connecticut the smell everywhere was that of a very ripe dumpster, filled from a restaurant's leftovers.

A whole city borough...smelling like that!

Love Henry Miller's writing, and his talking rants, too. Thanks for this.

He's a good fit, then, because Miller was the ugliest, filthiest, shittiest writer who ever lived. God love him for it too.
11
If they wanted to berate Miller as a traitor not only would he have welcomed it he would have considered it a compliment.

Cleveland thinks it has a rivalry with Pittsburgh, which is oblivious. Seattle's a fine small city.

Is he including Jersey City in his assessment?
(Speaking of Jersey City, Chicago's got its own Jersey City; it's called Gary, IN.)

You seriously can't be using THIS as an anti-new york example! This is Pro NY all the way...

You want an anti NY example? NEWSPAPERS, from the free to the times, they all read like children are throwing things at computer keys.

@13 Jersey City is a fantastic city. We've at least been able to have 24 hour light rail for the past 5 years, unlike some cities...

Please wait...
