Yeah, what WAS that!?!?! It rattled my windows in South Seattle. No mention on any other news website. Thank you Slog for hearing the patently obvious BOOM. I know I'm not crazy.
There were two of them, separated by a few tens of seconds. They weren't super loud here but there was a definite spike of overpressure -- the top of this five-storey building shook and the windows quivered.
The KC Sheriff copter has been flying around Cap Hill at very low levels the past few minutes -- following I-5 and now 520 at tree-top height and below. I don't know if it's in any way connected, but it is unusual.
there is some big event going on down by denny-blaine park...cops everywhere, all the public beaches closed. one of the houses by howell park had a huge tent being erected and tons of workers around getting ready for something. there are a lot of helicopters buzzing the area, so i agree that it was probably some sort of military jets.
sounded/felt like 2 double booms here , so four aircraft? west seattle blog says they were scrambled for possible breach of the no-fly zone and that they came from portland.
guess i don't need to fill the tub with water after all.
I'm on Lake Union... heard two booms and my windows shook. Supposedly they were sonic booms from two F-15's. The president is in town right now. It's probably connected but I'm not sure why the would need to break the sound barrier. I wonder if the prez is making a surprise visit to capitol hill?
I heard and felt it also in the Gig Harbor area. Reminded me of the sonic booms in southern Cal when the shuttle was coming down to land at Edwards AFB.
heard it up in the LFP (Lake Forest Park). Sounded like someone had just dropped a dumpster outside my house, which would not be unusual considering my neighbor's house wen tup in flames yesterday. Glad to know I wasn't imagining it...
Not buying the Sonic Boom (unless.... - see end of comments)- for one, what right does the military have to risk the kind of damage that can result - in fact since they admit to it they can pay for the damage caused by the car crashes that resulted, dishes broken, the back end of my truck that was lifted and sat down with such force that the bumber on my Ranger is now loose and my grand daughter and wife scared out of their wits. --- NICE going USAF - By the way I was in Tacoma and my daughter in Univeristy Place. Reports have come in form as far away to the Northeast as Mapple Valley and as far away to the Southwest as University Place. Taking a look at this information perhaps it could be sonic booms coming from the new Intercepters being scambled by the Air Force to intercept a plane in line with Air Force One at Boeing Field. Now that might make some sense and account for the risk to people and property here on the ground in that direct line from base to target. What do you say USAF - do we need to read Popular Science next month to see what really happened and find out about that new craft that goes to Mock 3 in 30 seconds and flys under 500 feet - well below radar. By the way how's the Narrows bridge - the sound makes a great course for such aircraft...
Totally made my windows shake in Olympia. I just figured they were standard artillery exercises from the returning Stryker units who got bored after coming back from Iraq.
Now they tell us us it was 2 F-15's out of Portland. Doesn't that raise even questions? For one, why out of Portland when we have McCord Airforce base right here in Tacoma's back yard which we've been told is always at the ready? Next, why sonic booms at ground level when the F-15 can reach 30,000 feet in 60 seconds? Then comes the question of the awesome waves that streach as wide as 15 miles. The F-15 was deisgned to pull the sonic wave back along her sides to a very narrow band so it could reach supersonic speeds (mach 2.5 - 2.7) just outside populated areas without destroying the areas it flew over. This is totlly unlike the new experimental hypersonic planes which are meant to be flown in space where the sonic wave pattern is not as critical as craft flown near the ground. As I noted before the jolt felt over the Pacific Northwest this after noon was coming from some craft in excess of Mach 3 between 1500 and 3000 feet or in excess of Mach 6 at 30,000 feet - much more like NASA's X-43A tested in 2004, and my guess flown out of McCord AFB and not Portland's Air Port. Side note - a friend of mine reveived a report from Maple Valley that some type of plane went down in Maple Valley around 1400 hours today, Tuesday, 8.17.2010 - I have a feeling this will never be substantuated...... What do you think?
Ditto! I heard that these planes flew overhead from Portland. We felt two quick blasts in Lakewood at Western State Hospital. It felt similar to the after shocks from the smelter explosion in Tacoma a couple years ago. McChord does not have any fighter planes. I have never heard about a plane going down in Maple Valley area.
since I grew up right next door to Camp Pendelton and had to deal with the constant sounds of bombs going off <5 miles from my house, this really didn't phase me. it was really weird seeing all the people at the Mercedes dealership next door to my work freaking out.
(WTF'ing from Seattle downtown)
The FAA says explosions heard throughout the Puget Sound area are sonic booms from military aircraft in the area.

I didn't hear the booms -- this room is louder than a jet already -- but they did shake my fanny in my chair.

Sonnnnnic Boooooooooom!!
Thanks, Slog, for keeping us informed.
