Why am I not surprised that this was made by "New Left Media?"

LOL LOL LOL!!!

And they were trying so hard to make the participants look like inarticulate kooks. I think they failed, but I would love to see their outtakes where the interviewees were too articulate or too compelling. I also think they tried to pick as many overweight and older people as possible. This video would be a great example for use in a propaganda class, especially when accompanied by some of the interviews that were edited out.

I agreed with a number of the interviewees on a couple of important points.

This is country is the last bastion of hope. No country in the world has the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms we have, not even Canada.

I never heard Glenn Beck call Barack Obama a racist, but I believe President Obama is a racist to some extent.

We must start enforcing our immigration laws, and we must curb illegals coming across the border. It is far more difficult for us to apprehend terrorists and drug runners with the huge masses of workers coming across our borders. We need a better foreign worker program so that US businesses can hire this labor force as needed. As for a path to citizenship, I see that as a separate issue. All migrant workers do not necessarily want to become citizens, only some do.

Dear Lord Basil:

Since you are obviously a foreign national (given how we do not cotton to titles such as "Lord" or "Count" in this mostest free-est of all nations) may I respectfully suggest you turn yourself in to the nearest IRS relocation center post-haste. Obviously your visa expired some time ago.

Citizen Basil --

Take a look in the archives of Chase Whiteside's website (blog) using Dominic's link in this post at the August 18th comment left by a 15-year-old boy who suggests that Whiteside seeks out only overweight and older folks while editing out the more articulate, reasonable people for these videos.

Love the video! I, a white person DC, marched with the "Black Panthers" of Al Sharpton. Hahaha. Never been called that before. It was said several times by several speakers that Beck could have his rally -- but those gathered by Sharpton had the dream.

Another point brought up at the rally I went to was DC statehood. My question: Why the frak don't the tax hating tea party patriots stand up for the DC residents rights to have representation in Congress? I mean c'mon, taxation without representaion!? I thought that was old shit, 'don't tread on me' bull shit.

@4

I guess you are as dumb as the people at the rally. Here's Glenn Beck calling Obama a racist.

@6: That would be August 19 :)

If he gets more famous, these interviews aren't going to work as well.

I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and feel these videos represent a lot of people from the community I was raised in. Unfortunately, these interviews aren't heavily edited. This is just the unvarnished truth.

Compare how much time there is between cuts compared to a T.V. interview. The shots are held from one angle, sometimes for up to a couple of minutes. These clips reflect more poorly on these people simply because Chase DIDN'T edit their words more fully. If his goal was true propaganda, he could've edited out 15-20 second clips of them saying the very worst things.

I applaud Chase's goal and I think he's doing more than most media to expose the ideas of the people in the Tea Party Movement. They are representing themselves, and he is giving them a platform to do it. What they say in his interviews is up to them, not him.

Thank you, Slog, for posting this. Now I am going to check out his site :-)

Having been born and raised in the Midwest, I can attest to the fact that the ideologies posited in these videos are mostly the generally held beliefs of the majority, especially in suburban and rural areas (which the Midwest has a TON of!).

Sure Chase edits the videos (he probably has hours and hours of footage, so how could he not edit it!?), but editing alone doesn't mean he's misrepresenting his interviewees. These videos are very representative of the viewpoints and beliefs held by many of the people I know back home. These are not isolated incidents of idiocy.

I endorse BohemianBoy's comments about the Tea Partier comments being representative. Believe me, I wondered if Chase Whiteside edited out articulate Tea Party responses just to make the Tea Party looked bad. However, a search for articulate Tea Party comments brought up nothing except poll results stating that Tea Partiers are representative of average Americans. OUCH!

I don't impugn the Tea Party's sincerity. However, sincerity does not compensate for failure to understand the issues in any depth whatsoever. If the Tea Party includes articulate members, I urge them to add their voices to the national discussion.

Well, Chase interviewed me at 8/28 and I can't find any of that video posted. When he interviewed me he told me that it was for a school journalism project. I suppose that was true; however, when I asked if there would be any way for me to see the finished project he gave me the impression that it wouldn't be possible. I feel that was a little dishonest. He could have told me to do a Google search for his name and I could catch it on YouTube. He did gve me his e-mal address and I sent him an e-mail today asking him a few questions. After I sent the e-mail, I did a Google search for his name and I found the YouTube videos. I hope that I sounded better- more informed and more sane- than the people I saw in his report. I find myself wondering how many interviews were left out entirely, like mine. He obviously has an axe to grind, but he gave no indication of that when he interviewed me. That is as it should be, if you plan to give a balanced overview of the people encountered.
Lastly, I am certain that if I went to the John Stewart rally wearing a t-shirt with a mandala on it, asked the right questions and then selectivly edited, I could make more than a few people look very foolish indeed.
As I mentioned earlier I did send Chase an e-mail prior to searching for his name on the internet. I hope he writes back. He seems to be, basically, a decent fellow. I'd really like to start a dialogue with him.
