Trains are the future, and the US has a shit-ton of superb agricultural land. Bongo-head, indeed.
2
Yeah, and agriculture? Who needs it! Food isn't grown any more, silly, this is the 21st century! I just twittered myself a delicious sandwich!
3
Bongo head is my favorite insult. of the day.
4
we subsidize oil and weapon production, too. ignore the republican.
5
He's absolutely correct about trains, bongo head. If they weren't heavily subsidized, they would have gone out of business years ago.
6
If the government didn't subsidize agricultural production, there would be a lot fewer people on the planet, and the remaining folks would be paying a shit ton more for their food. So...win?
7
He's not saying to quit subsidizing the usual stuff altogether, he's saying it's cruising to assume a stimulus need only include old-school economic engines.
8
He wants the government to subsidize stuff he can make a ton of money off of.
9
dude its ok to criticize the jobs plan. are you saying hes being unfair?
10
@8 is right. he wants the $ shit obviously for his wife. you should see how they pee on the employees at intel.
11
Hey, what's selling a few fighter jets to the America-destroying Saudis to prop up the military-industrial complex between friends.

That said, so long as we don't run trains like they do in Greece. Or Italy.

Did you hear the Senate just passed small business loans funding today?
12
@8 exactly. But Big Business doesn't create jobs. Small business does.
13
Underlying message: Don't subsidize those industries... subsidize MY industry!!
14
"The government should stop subsidizing trains and start subsidizing widgets! Widgets are the wave of the future."
---J. Timmins Hunnibrooke, President and CEO of Amalgamated Widgets, Ltd.
15
Let them eat chips.
16
Bongo head works for me, natch.
17
what what what? sloggers actually agreeing w Charles?!?!?! if i wasn't already sitting on the floor, i would have fallen off my chair
18
what what what? sloggers actually agreeing w Charles?!?!?! if i wasn't already sitting on the floor, i would have fallen off my chair
19
sorry 'bout the double post - slog's fault. wasn't me...i swear
20
@19 Bongo head ...
21
Just because you're a CEO, it doesn't mean you have anything relevant to say.
22
OMG! The CEO of a company that builds microchips says the government should put money into future technology? Shocking!

Odd though that he (presumably Republican, small government, etc) says "Washington must decide what the industries of the future are". What do you think he and the Tea baggers would say if Washington actually decided what the industries of the future are?

So, he obviously doesn't like what's being done to stimulate the economy. Does he give any suggestions on what should be done or is he a Republican?
23
OK, reading this article I think the guy may be bi-polar. He says "He said that proposal, which includes tax breaks for businesses and research and development incentives, is not the right plan either." then right after that he says "a major problem for companies is that they are being held back by high corporate tax rates". So, in other words, tax breaks won't help because what's really hurting business is high taxes. WTF??

To his credit he does say ""I really think they're trying," he said, adding that he doesn't think there is anti-business sentiment from the administration."
24
how about he creates a stimulus and hires some more workers?
25
@23,

Aren't the tax breaks for small businesses?
26
He's right about the education system. We are turning out millions of kids totally unprepared for 21st century employment.

And why is it that anyone who criticises the president is considered to be tea party. This is about as intelligent as the right painting the left with a giant socialist brush.
27
@26 as to your question - because you're traitors.
28
Bitching about the trains being subsidized are we? Puh-lease.
If the roads weren't heavily subsidized, we'd be riding horses over potholes and muddy lanes.

The USA stymied it's own economic growth by neglecting or removing trains and light rail in favor of more roads and private trucks & cars. Oops! Just like Seattle. We had a wide-open chance after the '62 World's Fair to reserve light rail (&/or monorail) right-of-ways. Urban planning FAIL. Oh well, time to retrofit our city so it can compete with the future. Too bad about the wasted time and money.
29
Republicans circa 2000: Don't let the Dems win, they'll take away your farm subsidies. They want food to be grown in SCARY AFRICA! Think of the children, we need a safe food supply here in the good 'ol USA!

Teabaggers (and CEO republicans) circa 2010: Agricultural! Why is the gubmint giving these people money?! IS THIS COMMUNIST RUSSIA? I don't see those farm subsidies in the ORIGINAL CONSTITUTION! <- last sentence only applies to teabaggers.

30
Most of those agricultural subsidies aren't going to help Ma Barker pay the note on the farm, they're going to Monsanto and other huge, corporate operators. And he's got a point about rail if he's talking about Amtrack. Expensive and never on time.
31
@27 Now you're just being goofy.
32
How about if Intel actually hires and recruits more American-university-educated employees rather than increasing their staff overseas or higher foreign-educated employees? Note American educated includes immigrants who come here to study as well as American-born citizens.
33
@32 but that would be taking personal responsibility for their own actions ...
34
Good God!!!!!!!! I actually agree with Will for once.
35
Taking responsibility for our own actions?

The difference between foreign scientists and U. S. scientists? Most foreign scientists have their education paid for by their respective countries. U.S. scientists, especially if they start out poor, pay the cost of their education out of their own pocket (well eventually). We then undercut the pay of our domestic scientists (or closing R and D entirely ... can't quite package that investment into a derivative) while those scientists trained abroad will work for cheaper AND don't have to pay back the hefty student loans.

You know, just fuck em all!

This why I do not want to be professor, I can't sell this lifestyle to anyone! And those with half a conscious can't promote science when this is how we treat our "best and brightest"

Westside forever: And he's got a point about rail if he's talking about Amtrack. Expensive and never on time.

First off, it's Amtrak, not Amtrack. Second, you seem to be saying that he's got a point about Amtrak being heavily subsidized because it's expensive. Do you mean expensive to the riders? Because actually for the riders it's not so expensive. But that's not his point. Now if you're talking about being expensive to the taxpayers, which is his point, well...

To say that Amtrak or passenger rail in this country is too heavily subsidized is a bit like a Soviet bureaucrat complaining that they're spending too much money on meals for prisoners in the gulag. The federal government spends a pathetic pittance on passenger rail. I could swear it's less than 1% of what gets spent on roads.

Please wait...
