Joy!

Good.

Yeah, friends from all over the world are posting vids in their blogs, links on Twitter, sharing on Google Reader, emailing links... this is a far-reaching piece of activism. So many people will be saved by this project - thank you for starting it.

What #1 said. Nothing like bringing joy to a professed, "Gloomy Gus." :) Hugs and kisses (Ick! From a girl!) on a .... I've been sitting here for a full minute trying to find a sufficiently hyperbolic adjective, and just *cannot* come up with one... "fantastic," is going to have to suffice... inspiration. Good, good work!

My mother mentioned it to me last night. I pretended not to have heard of it, because she was so delighted to have "discovered" it. It was lovely.
7
This is one of the best things I've seen the Stranger do. Makes me feel good to hear about it every day.
8
Please keep sharing news about how the project is spreading, Dan!
9
I come from Mexico and now I live in Canada, and even friends of mine down in Mexico have watched them, they're posting them on facebook and elsewhere. This is global.
10
Sweet.
11
Hey, Skandar? Can you ask your friends in Mexico to record some Spanish-language videos?
12
I hope (and predict) that in about 9 months, we'll start seeing videos from a new crowd: recent high school graduates who've just realized how true "It gets better" is, who tell us how important these were, and who continue spreading the message to the high schoolers who still have years to go.
13
From a lapsed Methodist to a recovered/cultural Catholic, bless you for starting this.
14
My 16 year old straight sister is now starting a gay/straight alliance group at her high school in suburban Minnesota because of your video. She even has the support from a bunch of the teachers, one of which who has always wanted to start one but couldn't find a student to lead it. Apparently there is already a lot of interest from the kids even though there are very few who are out at that school.
15
Thank you Dan.
I hope every LGBT youth in the country will somehow find a link to this site. The videos make me smile and cry and be so impressed at the grassroots movement that you've created.
16
I have watched many of the videos and was both happy and sad to unexpectedly see one from my friend's daughter...

I love this project. It is very important work to remind teenagers that they are not alone, that life does improve and that they can be successful happy adults. I wish Seth had gotten the message. http://www.queerty.com/bullied-to-death-…
18
I'm waiting for the video, comment, or email from someone whose life was saved by this project.

If only one teenager does NOT attempt suicide (or worse, succeed) because of this project, everyone involved deserves a Nobel Prize.
19
I can only hope that the haters tormenting the people in these videos might see themselves and try to become better people because of it. I don't have a lot of faith, but I certainly can hope.
20
God, my biggest concern was whether this was actually reaching kids. Reading this... I swear to god, I almost cried.
21
Bless you. You gave us a way to reach out a helping hand back through time to comfort the scared and lonely youth that we once were.

It's a really awesome thing that you did.

This is a great idea and I'm very, very happy that it's taking off like this. If I weren't so camera-shy, I'd be at the Chicago filming this weekend, but I'll continue to push it anyway I can.

You are really one of my heroes.

Great! All the folks who are already in the loop, already accepting of gays, are finding the video and linking to each other. The chances are increasing that some brutalized gay kid, who has a life line, will find the video in time.

Now, how does it get to the kids who are completely out of the loop?

I also agree with the person who suggested making a non-video version so that the poor kid doesn't have to worry about unaccepting parents overhearing it.

@18: Okay, we HAVE to keep this going: a Dan Savage Nobel Peace Prize would be amazing. I mean, if Obama can get one before he really DOES anything, surely this project, on top of his years of service helping people attain fulfillment in their relationships and sex lives, qualifies Dan.

@25

Damn straight!

Hell, it's already prompted someone to start an alliance group at school. AND I find via Twitter that Price Poppycock (he was on America's Got Talent for those who don't know him) may be doing a video.

*GLEE!!!*

This might get some mainstream celebrity endorsements soon. ^w^

A reader writes:

While I love Dan Savage, I have to disagree with his statement that "We can’t help them," referring to LGBT youth being bullied in high schools. There is absolutely something we can do.

In 1995, Lambda brought a case on behalf of Jamie Nabozny against the high school that allowed him to be relentlessly and brutally bullied for four years. Students urinated on him, pretended to rape him during class, and when they found him alone kicked him so many times in the stomach that he required surgery. Although they knew of the abuse, school officials said at one point that Nabozny should expect it if he’s gay. For the first time, in this case, a court issued an opinion finding that a public school could be held accountable for not stopping antigay abuse. The case went back to trial and a jury found the school officials liable for the harm they caused to Nabozny. The case then settled for close to $1 million.

We need a national campaign to sue the crap out of these schools. The disgusting and bigoted principals and administrators may be afraid to stand up for a gay kid, but they won't hesitate to protect themselves against a six figure damages claim.

This made me cry. Thank you Dan and Terry and everyone who has made, viewed, and shared a video. This is the stuff that matters. This is what really makes a difference.
29
Dan, you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for this.

I just saw a piece on the news, about a couple of young gay men who were so over whelmed with dispaI just caught a piece on the news about the two young men who took their lives, and the subsequent inspiration for your blog. I can’t imaging the depth of sadness and desperation these two wonderful spirits were feeling. It saddens me that because of some callas acts we’ve lost these two young men. As a farther of three, my heart goes out to the families. There is a poem called the Desiderata that I’ve shared with my children that you may find worth while checking out. One line that I’m most fond of sharing is, “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, and you have the right to be here. “ Please, for your moms and dads, hang in there, it will get better.

Please wait...
