In other news, television producer/writer Stephen J. Cannell ("Greatest American Hero," "The A-Team," "Baretta," "The Rockford Files") died yesterday at 69. Complications of melanoma.
i think we are absolutely despicable for doing that experiment on the guatemalans. but it is also important info that the guatemalan govt gave us permission to do it.
that still might not mean much, bc maybe we strong-armed them into giving us permission, but it is still important. what i've read so far has suggested that the guatemalan gvt. knew we were infecting people.
anyway. i'm not a fan of hitler comparisons (as in, the US = Hitler). but this qualifies.
5280, thanks for the news of Cannell. (As an aside, with regulars switching their goddam avatars for fall I guess, I do love what you've done with yourself there.)
Cannell's TV work is the history of crushes I developed as a small boy watching syndicated reruns of his better shows:
Baretta's Robert Blake taught me to love the tough-talking city guy,
Jim Rockford taught me to love a man who stays low to the ground laughing at the pretension of the world,
And by casting young Ken Wahl in Wiseguy, he gave me my first taste of genuine eye candy - Wahl's fight/love scenes with Kevin Spacey were sooo hot.
Perry King's pornstache and washboard abs on Riptide helped me realize that I liked the fellas.
Plus it was a detective show about best friends who lived on a boat and flew around in a helicopter solving crimes, which was the most awesome life a ten year-old boy could dream of.
Regarding the "world record" for time without a government: I must not be understanding the criteria being employed here. The national government in Somalia fell in 1991, and didn't have anything remotely resembling a replacement until 2004 (and even that's considered a "transitional" government). Anyone smarter than me care to enlighten?

And there's my TMI comment of the day.
