at 5:30 a.m., i am often woken by the sound of the 71 bus lifting and dropping the edges of the concrete panels in the street a block away from my house. you can feel it, too.

Is it garbage day in your neighborhood? If memory serves, the compactor cycle on the garbage trucks lasts about 45 seconds. When they trip the thing on my block, it sometimes sounds like a helicopter is trying to land on my roof.
