Oh snap! That's fucking low.

Does Dan Savage Get Off On Demonizing President Obama? Why Is Mr "Anti-Bully" A Big Bully Himself? I think Dan has an influential voice, it’s just unfortunate that he behaves like a dodgy Tea Bagger one day, and a savior of teens the next. Savage should do all the teens he is reaching out to a favor and not taint all his good work he is doing with the “It Gets Better Campaign” by turning around and slandering the president WHO HAS DONE MORE FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN HISTORY. I respect that we need to keep up the pressure on the government and Congress, but can we please reconsider the method of “over the top bullying?”
Here's my rebuttal to Savage's savage behavior: http://transformingmedia.blogspot.com/20…

Hey 102, nice work using Dan's post to promote your own website...that makes you seem very non-sleazy.

But I would be very interested in hearing exactly what Obama has done which causes you to proclaim (in ALL CAPS, no less) that he "HAS DONE MORE FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN HISTORY."

I know he's promised more for the LGBT community than any other President...but that's not the same as "doing."
104
Man up, Barack.

Tell your Attorney General to let it slide.
105
Lol, well looks I wont be supporting any more LGBT issues, ever. If Savage and others with similar views cant understand the huge amount current political climate and the backlash that the POTUS would create in just mandating sweeping changes to DADT and the DOMA without Congressional support, then FU*K them.

Even if he changed things--the next president could change things right back after Obama was swept out of office.

This is chess not checkers--not too many Progressives are willing to put gays ahead of their country for the short money gains of 3% of the population. This impatient delusional attitude is ridiculous.

Once, I too would have toiled endlessly for the table scraps of attention offered by well-intentioned Dems. But now I believe that if they can't deliver on their promises and in fact have no serious commitment to doing so, then, like brother Dan, I believe they need to shut up and stop mimicking those who truly do care. Their failures are now directly contributing to ruined careers and young folks being bullied to death. They can put a satin pillow over their heads all they want to but the reality is that Obama and the Democratic Congress have sold well-intentioned Americans down the river. They have developed this pathetic need to be loved by their opponents who we all know are unapologetic abusers. The current (and, soon to be, short-lived) Democratic majority has squandered a rare opportunity to make a real difference and that is something this nation will pay for for years to come. Have a little self respect, fearful LGBT brothers and sisters, and get up off your knees and demand better - like Dan has done.

Well, I might have used prettier language, and gone on a diatribe about pandering politicians, but in the interests of actually making my comment before the next Presidential election goes by, I'll restrain myself, and just add my say to Dan's.

And although usually I'm delighted to see eye to eye with you Dan, this time I regret having to agree. Because we had such high hopes.

The President has talked the talk, and very eloquently too, but when it comes to walking the walk; he's instead opted for a leisurely horse and buggy ride....through Times Square....on New Year's Eve. In other words, crawling along at a snail's pace, watching the horse stop to sniff the grass, and just generally allowing himself be carried along by the driver, the whims of the horse, and the pace of the surrounding crowds.

I can't think of anything he has done for the LGBT community directly; and this last business about not disrupting troop morale during wartime? What a crock! Most of these people are already serving anyway; and many of their fellow service members know, or suspect the truth. As long as gay servicemen and women do their jobs well, the majority of other service people don't care.

If troop morale gets lower, it's just possible that it might owe something to the fact that they are being asked to risk everything they have to serve in a place for reasons two or three times removed from the one that purportedly brought them there, too many years ago.

And I doubt that morale would be improved any by a mass exit of the more than 60,000 seasoned service members who are already serving there, hoping they won't be asked, so they don't have to tell and lose it all.

As for the concerns about the sexuality of new recruits; well, I've passed a few recruiting offices and haven't noticed them besieged by new applicants of any sexual orientation, high unemployment notwithstanding. So I wouldn't be in a hurry to turn down any ready, willing and able candidates to serve, regardless of who and how they loved.

Sign it, Mr. President, as you could and should have done last year. You're the boss of the Armed Forces, and that is your right. Not only that, but you would be supported by top ranking military chiefs, which should tell you something.

More time. More studies? People could go through medical school with less studying.

And anyway, you MUST be joking.

If it's unfair, and unconstitutional, and people are being denied their rights, you don't wait until the crowds are ready to grant them.

When women were given the vote, should the country have let a few elections pass by checking their ballots first, to make sure they weren't going to disrupt things by not agreeing with menfolk. Or that they didn't do something crazy like redecorate the White House.

The Emancipation Proclamation didn't include any notes about kicking it around with the slave owners, to seeing how they felt about having the plantation run without the free labor.

If that sounds outrageous to us, the solutions proposed to gradually end DADT will sound just as absurd to new generation. We can decide now whether our grandchildren will talk about us proudly, or ask us "How could you think that was such a big deal?"

One objection to gays serving with straight members of their own sex in the field concerned the possibility of them looking lustfully at other staff members while they showered. Yes, really, it did. Despite the fact that they have managed so far to keep their lust in check, this was really and truly mentioned by other adults who have presumably finished high school and held jobs. This has truly been mentioned as a concern.

A former Air Force officer who won the Amazing Race in 2003, and now has a career in entertainment (and plenty of money) has been making appearances about the repeal of DADT. He mentioned this absurd objection, but has pledged to personally buy a 29 cent shower curtain for any armed forces showers that need them, if that's truly all that's keeping the status quo. So now there's no excuse!

This is in the news at the same time as the Carl Paladino debacles; and as annoyed as I am by his comments, at least with an outright bigot, you can see their white sheet showing.

As twisted as his convictions may seem, at least he has the courage of his craziness.

The President is one of many politicians whose personal convictions would probably favor equal rights for all citizens (at least I hope they would), but who waffle and wobble, double talk, defer and study. Anything rather than take an action that may cost them votes.

They try to please both sides, but ultimately they please none, and with them--I feel worse than outraged.

I feel betrayed. Because they should know better, and they caused us to hope that they might show it.

The only bright spot recently has been listening to the Senate filibuster by the President's one time opponent, and reflecting that he could have been spewing this vile nonsense while being supported by our tax dollars, instead of just the tax dollars from his own state. It would have been quite stressful having to spend four, or eight, years worrying obsessively about his health, every time he had a sniffle. Even if we had to mount and stuff him; we'd have to try, because we would be a mere heartbeat away from having the Palin family overrunning the White House.

Shudder, shudder! Deep breath.

So, yes, it could have been worse. But I'm beginning to think that we didn't choose a fearless leader, but only a lesser evil.

Thanks Dan for these words. I am an American living in "exile", which means I am separated from my family, friends and country because I've chosen to be with the one I love, in another country.

We had high hopes that DOMA would be thrown out in the wake of promises made by Barak Obama, then followed by UAFA (or some aberration thereof) to allow same-sex marriage in US federal and immigration laws.

The very least the Obama administration can do is keep the DOJ from expending energies and dollars appealing important human decency rulings that help the LGBT community.

"It Gets Better" - Really?? When?? -- after my parents die and guilt overwhelms me because I was not able to be by their side? after I've lost all hope of making a good home for my family, in my own country? In 2008 "every vote counted" - in 2010 that's hard to believe and very much at the expense of the LGBT community.

President Obama has promised more to the LGBT community and has done the least, Back pedling, equivocating, "explaining" why it can be done now make me want to VOMIT!
During the WAR, we are told we are protecting Democracy. As the Bodies of Americans mounted, the same LIE is told. Any dissent was anti-American, anti- Christian etc. but these lies still a Steaming Pile of the Foulest Bull SH*T ever spouted within America.!

Because we cannot meet enlistment quotas, we are allowing Convicted FELONS into the military. Bet you didnt know that one?

FAGGOT, homo, queer are killing words. Kids and young adults and adults are cutoff from their families. THEY SEE THE ONLY RECOURSE AS DEATH. I have contemplated it 10 to 50 times a day, for DECADES. I still have hope but the hatred on TV radio, internet, bombard and assault me constantly. A black eye heals, a busted lip gets better, but when your self-identity is assaulted, it NEVER heals. Doctor Phil McGraw own words. Escaping the hate in school jobs, and media is near impossible. No one has the empathy needed for the LGBT community's mental & Physical health. As free men we are never truly free

We are denied basic civil rights. In 1923 Supreme Court said right to marry is a basic right! In the majority opinion "... Justice McReynolds stated that the "liberty" protected by the Due Process clause "[w]ithout doubt...denotes not merely freedom from bodily restraint but also the right of the individual to ...contract, to engage in any of the common occupations of life, to acquire useful knowledge, to marry, to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience, and generally to enjoy those privileges long recognized at common law as essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men."
Religion wants to remove the "...privileges long recognized at common law"

DADT had an "opinion poll" whether a soldier accept a gay comrade. Whatever way an "opinion poll" is worded determines it's outcome. So this "opinion poll" is a bogus measurement to start with. Harry Truman didn't ask the troops how much their discrimination would affect them, or whether it was a good idea to integrate the races. Harry Truman ended it by executive order. He had the sense of right and wrong.
President Obama can do the same thing. He has to have the character to follow our NATO allies who have openly out Officers and enlisted troops. We don't decide whether our soldiers will serve with our allies sexual may be in conflict with a US law! Using sexual identity is a way to mask overt discrimination unworthy of our basic premise of Freedom and Due Process. Any orders that all discharges based on DADT can be held pending review of each and every case. It was done in WW2, Korea, Vietnam. When it was convenient for the Armed forces to keep these people, they were kept and served.
111
Look Obama, I'm tired of being treated like a "nigger" by you. What part of "equal rights" don't you understand?

And you Obama / HRC apologists: SHUT THE FUCK UP!

111 posts?!...

wow.

Let's recapitulate for latecomers-

1- Dan is a desperate craven attention-whore who thinks he has found his ticket to fame- dead teenagers.

2- he is shitting himself because the WH is CO*OPTING his use of the English language
( "You Can't Say 'IT GETS BETTER' Bitch! I Said 'IT GETS BETTER' First! WHAAAAAAA!!")

3- Slog's Legion of credulous lackey fanboys are scratching and clawing to get their chance to stick their tongues up Dans Ass and purr "Dan, I sooooo much agree with you....."

in other words, just another day on Slog.
113
Today is the day I became a Log Cabin Republican.
114
You a a dumb fucking racist Dan. You still think Prop 8 wasn't passed because AfricanAmericans didn't vote for en masse. You community did next to nothing to out reach on that issue.
Now you are mad because 44 won't stop an appeal of DADT. You let's go to school you ignorant fuck so you can apologize. The administration always appeals any law that goes against them through the Solicitor General's office because it's the LAW, as in the oath of office to uphold the laws of the land. If your complaint was that using the same inflammatory language the Bush administration used, which was true in 2009 I could at least have sympathy. In this case you don't get crocodile tears because you don't understand how the law works. There are homosexual constitutional lawyers who can tell you how the process works so apologize and shut the fuck up
115
OK. What now, Dan? You just fucked yourself. I hope you don't get a damn thing. Fuck you too!
116
It's funny to see a gay rights activist with so much contempt for bisexuals yelling at someone for throwing part of their constituency under the bus.

Some expert correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they legally have to appeal?
119

Seriously........
My husband and I are 100% with Dan.
Sorry Mr. President, but we've come to the heartbreaking decision that you are indeed a bigot, a homophobe and a liar.
120
119

Shut your fucking mouth.
Danny strongly endorsed Obama in the election.

Thank you # 28. And fuck you Dan. Really, McCain would have been soooo much better, right? Oh wait - that's right, he's THE MOST VOCAL OPPONENT of the repeal. God, you are such a fucking asshole. We are going to get DADT repealed (no thanks to you, asshole). There is no fucking way we would have any hope of getting it any other way than the process happening now, but you are too much of an arrogant asshole to realize that and refuse to look at the facts (how republican of you.) And we certainly would never have gotten the same-sex partner benefits my partner and I can now enjoy as State Department employees - oh but did you even know that? I can't wait to celebrate the repeal of DADT with my friends here in DC that have worked so hard to make it happen, I just wish I was celebrating the victory with you, not over you.

To quote your own button, Dan (the one you wore to the White House reception some months after this post, apparently after you calmed down): "Evolve Already"

    Please wait...
