Gaaaaaah. Last week I heard a couple of announcers talking about how keeping KUOW on during the day was "soothing for the kitty cats at home." That's right. KUOW is so boring it will even put your cat to sleep. I'm sure that's the message they want to be sending when asking for pledges.
2
they could get money by selling the bottom floor they never use with all the nice studios...
3
@1, that's self-mockery, rare enough in public broadcasting that I applaud each little instance, so: yay!
4
@1: When we adopted our greyhound, we were specifically told that talk radio should be left on when they're home alone-- the racing farms leave radios on 24/7 to keep the dogs company and they are less likely to be destructive when it's on. So yeah, my poor dog's been getting quite the head full of pledge drives the past week (seriously, KPLU, KEXP, and KUOW? You make me so sad when they're all at once).
5
1.3 million I believe.
6
@4, that must be a well-informed dog.
7
They're very cagey those KUOWers. It's almost like they've done this "pledge drive" thing before and have somehow figured out what makes the donations flow most efficiently.

The pledge drive is annoying, but try AM radio for a couple of hours. A few sets of radio ads and you'll beg for a pledge drive.
8
What is this "KUOW" that you speak of??
9
I hadn't had coffee yet, so I am not a reliable witness, but I think they said the goal was 1.3 million and that they had raised $700,000. I'm listening to a lot of smodcast where normally NPR would be on.
10
"...but try AM radio for a couple of hours."

Wow! You lasted hours? I can't last more than a few minutes. If I want to be yelled at, I go to a metal show.
11
The KUOW pledge drive is so excruciating that I usually end up switching them off entirely until it's over.
12
And I believe Scott. He's trustworthy.

You must be using some strange new definition of the word "trustworthy" with which I am unfamiliar.
13
I never knew how much they loved Alec Baldwin.
14
Hi Dan,

The goal indeed is 1.3 million dollars. To date we have raised about $780,000. We have been announcing the progress and overall goal today. We'll continue to do so for the rest of the drive. Perhaps we should announce it earlier - something to consider for the spring.

We greatly appreciate everyone who has made a pledge.

Well, The Stranger told me a few years ago that KUOW has a shit ton of money in its coffers and that's why it won't be straightforward about it. They don't, in fact, need ANY money...so they know you won't give if they tell you that. This is why I don't donate. I will wait for The Stranger to let me know when I should donate.
16
KUOW
KEXP
KBCS
KPLU

there is no hiding from pledge drives, except in the sweet embrace of silence. or CDs. or an ipod. but mainly silence.
17
Soon to add KING-FM to the pledge-drivers...sigh
18
We have to pay for the Husky Football Team's new cars.

Give it a week or two.
19
(also, they cut state funding for KUOW so they have a bigger hole to fill)
20
I think the goal is to lose 10 lbs. And to take a serious inventory of rage issues.
21
It's annoying that they claim to bug you like this for only "two weeks out of the year." But the pledge drives never last just a week. Usually, they go for a week plus 3 or 4 days. Fucking liars.

I usually find a station in another city to listen to during pledge week. KQED had their fall pledge drive already.
22
@21, you are clearly very familiar with their antics, so you must listen a lot. I sure as heck hope you are a contributor!
23
This is close enough to the right place to ask as any - why is Steve Scher on the 'enemies of slog' list?
24
@23, have you ever listened to Steve Scher?

He's the bane of my morning commute and possibly the smuggest most annoying interviewer ever.

Not to mention, they clog up two hours with what tend to be extremely boring topics.

Today: Gardening and news from Canada!

His voice and cadence are annoying too.
25
Seriously? Don't complain. I've heard the pledge drive end early here. That never ever happens in Atlanta, never. It always goes all the way through and they never reach their goal. Be happy you don't live in Atlanta.
26
@22 - I give to KPLU. Their drives are far less relentless. I'd give to both (since I listen to KUOW more), but again, I don't like their tactics. They should take a page out of KPLUs book.

@24 - My version of hell is listening to Steve Scher and Marcie Sillman banter about pledging. At some point a teacher must have told her that it's important to emphasize a word in every sentence - but she just picks a random one, regardless of which word holds the nub.
27
fuck kuow. cbc vancouver streaming online is the way to go.
28
"Not to mention, they clog up two hours with what tend to be extremely boring topics.
Today: Gardening and news from Canada!"

Tim Clark, I call you out at dawn, sir. Pistols or dead beavers, your choice.
29
@24

Inskeep is smug defined - seriously, someone should just take him out back and cave his head in, what an asshole with the attitude in his voice
30
Here on the east side of the mountains (Pullman/WSU), NWPR has cut their drive down to just one day, with the words- "Pledge today, we'll reach our goal and quit bugging you". This has been going on for about 4 years now.
Why can't KUOW et al do the same?
31
After reading some of the comments here I suddenly feel lucky to be all the way on the other side of the country. For one thing WPLN has stated their specific goal of just $400,000.00, and I believe their promise to stop early if they reach that goal (although I won't hold my breath).

For another they've actually started doing some decent local programming, especially since they got rid of the people who were basically buying their way onto the air.
32
I guess I'm an outlier then, I like Steve Scher and the Weekday programming. Except the gardening show - I can't grow a damn thing to save my life so why listen to it for an hour. Ross Reynolds is the one that drives me batshit crazy. He always seems to be behind or something and rushes callers and whoever he's interviewing. And has a smug 'I know better than everyone' sort of tone to his voice. I quit listening to the Conversation a long time ago.
33
Plus I love listening to the Friday news round up show every week - more so when Eli is on and can stick it to Joni Balter. Makes my day every time!
34
@30

To my knowledge, NW Public Radio raises about $280k per pledge drive. We're trying to raise 1.3 million. Unfortunately we can't raise 1.3 million in one day.

We constantly evaluate many of the pledge drive strategies - power hours, one-day drives, silent drives and other possibilities. Before each drive, we always discuss and evaluate our strategy.

Hope that helps explain things a bit more,

35
Seriously, do any of you have better ideas for how public radio stations should raise money? Many of the complainers obviously listen, but do you actually donate?

This sense of entitlement -- everything should be free, and should be unsullied by advertising or pledge drives -- pisses the hell out of me. If someone is producing something of value they need some way to produce revenue. If you don't like that, go elsewhere -- but stop with the bitching.
36
They probably don't donate, bigyaz.

I know there's my name on the KUOW wall somewhere for the giant contribution I gave them.
37
hey arvid --

since you are responding to slog comments, why don't you respond to some of the questions posted above?

1. why is blowhard steve scher still on the air?
2. why so many lame gardening shows?
3. when is ross reynolds' last day?
4. why is kuow programming so boring (it even puts cats to sleep, by your host's own admission)?
38
Steve Scher makes me want to scream. I can't imagine how he ever landed such a plum job in broadcasting. He's about the worst interviewer I've ever heard - can't formulate a coherent question, which usually comes out in some garbled string of words like "so.... uh.... what do you think...uh.... so what would that look like?" I'm amazed that interviewees actually answer him.

I'm with Katy - I love hearing Eli stick it to smug, too-clever-by-half-or-so-she-thinks Joni Balter.
39
This is the whitest discussion I've ever read.
40
Since you mentioned Steve Scher . . .
I first was annoyed by his voice - with his odd cadence and rhythm and word emphasis it was difficult to hear what he was saying. When I adapted to his voice, I realized he wasn't saying anything worth hearing anyway. I can imagine it must be difficult to maintain intelligent and/or witty dialogue on radio, but really! In trying to sound witty and/or intelligent he comes across as not very bright - and not a very good listener. Hasn't anyone ever told him his interviewing skills are minimal?

I stopped donating to KUOW long ago (when they kept axing programs I liked), listen to it for news only when I can't receive/stream KPLU (which I support, along with KEXP). The fact that their pledge drive extends so much longer than anyone else's makes it all the less likely I would ever pledge to them again.
41
They still don't put the amount remaining on their web site. Too weird.

Please wait...
