So, are these "activists", who seem more like "deactivists" to me, going to go after old projects retroactively? Because there's PLENTY of hideous buildings from the 90s, 80, 70s and 60s you could criticize even more resoundingly than the handful of unsightly four-packs that got built in the last decade. The "auto-court town homes" you describe in the first paragraph are possibly the ugliest, most unfriendly style of residential architecture ever conceived. I can't think of something worse.
