This kid is much more entertaining than the make believe french guy.
And he is about to be tarred and feathered by the sloggers.
2
I demand that Matt Luby starts reviewing French restaurants.
3
Adorable.

Of course: http://people-press.org/report/319/publi…

TL;DR - Daily Show/Colbert viewers are the most informed audience out there, scoring a full 20 points higher in knowledge of national and international affairs than the average. Also, people today are just as informed as they were 20 years ago.
4
Boy's got a muth like a cannon. Always shooting it off.
5
"Rather than actually care, we will shield ourselves behind a wall of jaded nihilism."

That's rich, coming from someone too fucking lazy to look up Pramila Jayapal. Or is this a memoir?
6
What a self-righteous douche.
7
this event isn't for the previously unengaged. it's for the vast majority of sane liberals who are tired of ELF & PETA & the RCP & Peltier & Zerzan's minions injecting their issues at every vaguely leftist rally. McDermott will be there, for chrissakes - though lord knows how he's supposed to be funny.
8
This anti-Jon Stewart (one of the smartest commentators on television, comedian or not) stance smacks of juvenile navel-gazing. Not adorable, Matt. Just pretentious and self-aggrandizing. When you get a little older, you might just get over yourself.
9
I'm headed to the Other Washingtons rally. Anybody know where I can be small amounts of marijuana on short notice there?
10
I take all my cues on which media sources to trust and which political events to participate in from anonymous unpaid bloggers.
11
liberal bait
12
There's gonna be dick sucking? Soooo much better than the conservatard rallies.
13
I really like this guy. He sounds so YOUNG and self-rightous, I just want to hug him. Is he cute? I picture him to be this cute, cuddly fellow that you just want to grab up and hug. His attitude reminds me of myself when I was his age and had the world totally figured out. Give 'em hell Matthew!
14
This is the worst intern you've ever had, Stranger. You know he's going to embarrass you and not just himself sooner or later.
15
I truly cannot respect someone who doesn't vote "for philosophical reasons" and then bitches about people being not being civically engaged. For that matter, it's kind of hilarious that you are mocking people for not doing anything substantive, when you seem to be doing fuck-all to actually implement your government-free theoretical paradise.
16
@ 1,

Yeah that French intern didn't know jacque-sheet about truly being critical and condescending.

Lemme know when The Strangler gets a German intern--then we'll really get our balls nailed to the wall.
17
@6 word.

yeesh
18
u mad?
19
Speaking of hiding behind "a wall of jaded nihilism," this kid's schtick is getting tired. Also, for an aspiring (and failing) "news intern" who apparently doesn't know how to internet:

http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=pramila+jayapal

If you're going to criticize people for being uninformed unless Jon Stewart makes a joke about it, maybe you shouldn't write statements like "a woman I have never heard of before" in reference to one of the state's leading immigration reform advocates. Dick.
20
This is rich, Matt the lazy anarchist lectures anyone who would attend the rally rather than "read a newpaper or blog". But he pays so little attention to the news himself he missed a major story covered on local and national news, tv and blogs on immigration issues this week, most of which featured Pramila Jayapal the leader of One America, whom he doesn't know. We don't expect ya to know everyone, but even an unpaid intern should be able to google a name ya dumb ass, particularly before you lecture the rest of us.
21
This is all sooooooooo meta!
22
What 15 & 20 said.

You complaining about civic laziness. FUNNY!
23
Rabble Rabble Rabble
24
I think he's just doing it to get attention. Oh, I'm sure he's probably an anarchist/libertarian/whatever, but I don't think he really cares about politics or taxes or issues all that much.

It's all a ruse to get Slog riled up.
25
i'm assuming this is satire. inception-style: a satire within a satire within a satire.
26
@24:
Big DUH!
27
OK--Now go fetch the coffee!
28
My, aren't we feeling smug today.
29
I don't see any mentions here of local "Keep Fear Alive" rallies (Seattle, Bothell, Tacoma, Redmond...).
I'm amused that Rally4Sanity and March4Fear rallies are scheduled for Ottawa and Calgary. I hope those crowds get energized by old "Talking to Americans" clips from "This Hour Has Twenty-Two Minutes."
30
Jennifer S corrected me and says they're setting up the Jumbotron at Westlake Mall to show the DC rally at 9am.

Feel free to arrive early!

Oh, and if you're from out of town and here for the Rally To Impose Fear and Hate, don't bother paying for parking - I'm sure nobody will ticket you.
31
@29: Ah, back in the days when "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" was funny - Rick Mercer's leaving really hurt that show.
32
You naively lump all of Stewart's audience into this apathetic hipster douche bag category. What
is your evidence for this? Are there plenty of apathetic hipster douche bags that watch The Daily Show? Of course. There are plenty of douche bags in any television audience, this is America. But there many informed and politically active citizens that watch The Daily Show, and this rally is helping to further increase the sense of community amongst this group. Go fuck yourself. :)
33
@15,

He isn't bitching about people not being civically engaged; he's bitching about people who are beneath his eminence being civically engaged, because then they'll do shit like "steal" from him. Which just goes to prove that libertarians and faux anarchists have more contempt for the common man than any other political group.
34
Dumbass even got the time wrong. The rally starts at 9am, NOT 9:30am. Maybe it's time to get a new intern. Opinions aside, best to get the basic facts right. Ugh.
35
@33 And, it looks like his real point is that we are all beneath his eminence. I love being lectured by high-minded children...
36
It's so cute that slog has a mascot. Portraying others as jaded and arrogant while coming out as...jaded and arrogant. He does tricks, too!

On the one hand if the slog is to have a conservative voice I would rather it be a reasonable one. On the other hand I'm guessing that a reasonable conservative would quickly give up on slog in disgust, and only a True Believer is hardened enough to stay despite the shit that will fly his or her way.
37
For someone complaining about people not reading, you sure did miss that THE RALLY STARTS AT 9AM.
38
wow matt

the troll is impressed

you nailed it.

and all the little piggies squealing-

even better.....
39
The funniest part it his counterpart to our doing nothing is "sitting at home and reading an anarchist zine".

How productive is that? I'd say slightly less productive than reading a porno zine - by like 3 or 4 ounces.
40
Ok, I fixed the time (honest mistake) and Pramila Jayapal things. I'm new to Seattle. I hadn't heard of her before. I was just writing the truth. But if she's for immigration, I'm for her.

Now for the fun:

@1 -- I like this guy.

@3 -- I knew someone would cite those figures. Hey guess what, a lot of Daily Show viewers are college-educated. Do they know more about the news because they watch Jon Stewart or because they have college degrees? Hmm.

@8 -- How original. "When you grow up..."

@10 -- You'll go far in life that way.

@13 -- I am eminently huggable.

@14 -- Worst=person who departs the slightest bit from the Slog commenter consensus?

@15 -- I'm writing, aren't I? That's the most valuable thing I can do. I don't believe in violence. I'm not going to be hatching any revolutions any time soon.

@24 -- On the contrary, I care a ton. I just have to be careful not to get too worked up about each and every issue or else I'd become a depressed and angry soul.

@32 -- Coming of political age in the last decade, my interaction with Stewart viewers has been primarily those of the apathetic hipster douche category. Sorry if I over-generalized.

@33 -- Contempt for the common man? I am the common man. I just don't like force initiated against peaceful people.

@36 -- So now I'm a conservative. Really? A guy who is probably to the left of all of you on ending war, torture, police brutality, and drug laws is a conservative? You need to get your mind out of the left-right paradigm and grow up a bit.
41
@39 -- You know what's even funnier? Your complete inability to pick up on self-deprecating humor.
42
@37 no, originally it was supposed to be 10 am, but then some participants went and got the permit and did it for 9 since they wanted to watch the DC rally from 9 am to 10 am, so it's kind of moved earlier over time.

Great work all you Eastside people who have done the most to set this up!

(if they left it up to those of us in Seattle it would probably be even later)
43
Shouldn't you be learning how to farm or make your own furniture or something? If you wanna be self-sufficient, it's gonna take some work, and you might wanna think about broadening your skill set; You will have a hard time bartering insulting diatribes for food, especially since you still haven't mastered the art of charging for your services.
44
@40,

The whiny fringe always gets steamrolled, whether in your precious anarcho-syndicalist commune or in a republican democracy. It's called LIFE.
45
More comedy gold from the wanna-be anarchist media filter. Just WTF is Slog but a news filter (and arena for self pleasuring attention seekers)?
I hope your anarchy is more considered than your writing.
46
As Reagan would say "well, there you go again", Matt guess you are not going to the rally--i'm surprised as you called out the line up you listed "A bunch of comedians will be on hand, too." what, you don't like humor?

Anyway, saw your correction on the verbage for the Lady you now know to be a big deal--your correction seemed a bit rich "Awesome Immigration advocate". guess you got a little smack down.

keep writin' you are good fodder for the sloggers.
we need to be entertained--it appears.

47
@40 Apology accepted. And I can honestly empathize with that position somewhat, since most of the people I know like The Daily Show, and most of the people I know aren't that politically active. But the majority of people tolerating the status quo and liking good comedy is just a truism of our species.

Before now TDS really hasn't been a rallying point for political activism & Iโ€™m by no means sure it will become one after this, especially since they equated Code Pink w/ the pro-torture, pro-war activists in their promotion for the rally. TDS has just been awesome at what it said it was, satire, and apathetic and nonapathetic people alike eat it up.
48
Awesome. Could this intern next please shit all over the It Gets Better project as some others have done?
49
@43 -- People who are looking to slam me, this is the way to do it. This guy made me laugh. I like to be made fun of when it's done well.

@44 -- And then this guy did it the wrong way. Anarcho-syndicalism, really? Just sloppy.

@47 -- And I'll give Stewart credit when he deserves it. I loved his takedown of Comedy Central in the aftermath of the South Park-Muhammad controversy last year.

@48 -- But I like the It Gets Better project. Watching Dan and Terry's video really got me.
50
@49,

I'm very sad for you that you didn't get the reference. Not surprising though, considering your staggering ignorance of just about everything.
51
I love this post.
52
Mudede and the French intern have reproduced, apparently.
53
They need to do a new Barbie, name it Unpaid Intern, and have it say "Ironic Humor is Hard".
54
I sure wish Dan Savage was speaking at this. He was asked repeatedly but did not respond.
55
A 'zine'? How adorable. I thought those all went out of business shortly after that word went out of style; sometime in '91 or so.
56
@40

The scores were based on knowledge of current events. I don't see how my degree from four years back could inform me about the world today. Hell, none of my courses described the world THEN.

And Stewart's show alone doesn't inform these people. I've got twenty or so news sources I read every day. I think Google Reader said something like 100,000 articles in the past year. We're educated, yes, but that's orthogonal to being informed.

You sound informed, but misguided.
57
Bloggers here are supposed to be civil? Okay, if it's a serious topic, I can understand - but civil about this???
58
unpaid intern,

Have fun with your mom at home tomorrow! You are a douche bag and will probably always be JUST an intern.

Enjoy your lonely life loser.
59
Ok...you said it...now shut the fuck up and go and get someone a cup of coffee, intern!
60
Of course I'm just a genocidal troll who wants to replace the midwest with robot farmers, but I like the idea of the rally. I would have gone to the Seattle rally if I hadn't already agreed to oversee a piano move for my neighbor.

And I say give the Unpaid Intern a break. Like other commenters have said, he reminds me of myself at that age, albeit I was the Socialist version, and of course there was no internet then: we just mimeographed a lot of stuff and felt very agitprop about ourselves.

I've mellowed with age, as I'm sure he will - unless he becomes one of those angry middle-aged men who call the talk shows or gets his own cable access program, like that old man who used to drone on about how Californians shouldn't have to pay tax because California wasn't a state or something. If so, Then all bets are off.
61
Unpaid Intern is hilarious, is not taking himself too seriously, and is thank-the-little-baby-Jesus not talking about croissants...what's not to love? I am picturing him with floppy, adorable hair, skinny jeans, an old button-down shirt he got at a thrift store, and wearing that Tom's of Maine deodorant that doesn't really work...in short, I am picturing about half of the guys I went to college with. On the other hand, I've been wrong about what Stranger writers looked like before, as I assumed Paul Constant had graduated from high school already.
62
So while we're doing that, you're going to give yourself a blowjob, bloviate on a blog, and congratulate yourself for being all radical and holding unusual views, never mind the fact that it's unusual because it's completely unrealistic?
63
When I think sanity I think of that extreme leftist commie filthy fucking mick Jim McDermott.
64
This post and the response was funny. Good job, UI.
65
Was a great day to sit at home and watch college football.
66
@65 WTF? Both Washington State teams got annihilated ...
67
Rally to restore sanity and/or fear DC edition: tried to take our underfunded public transportation there. Aforementioned public transit authority (a private company) decided that THIS weekend (there was also a marathon) would be a good one to cut service for repairs. Sat there waiting for a train for 20 minutes while workers on the maintenance project crowded around their stolen shopping carts smoking (yes, in the station). Couldn't get on a train (the first 2 that came by headed downtown), so decided to take a different public transit route that would take us further away from downtown and then back. Found out the closest station to the rally was closed as we navigated this route, gave up, went to lunch, and went home. Don't have cable, so I haven't had a chance to see what it was like, yet. We would have walked the 3 1/2 miles had we known it was going to be so ridiculous out there, but, once we committed to public transit, it would have taken us much longer to walk, and we had already paid the fare (if you leave without traveling anywhere, they charge you the base fare...fine for preventing vagrants from riding the subway all day without paying, not so good for MetroFails(TM)).

Take away: public services are good when they're well-funded and run efficiently. Typically without the involvement of private enterprises. For another example, see what has happened on the PA turnpike since Citigroup has bought it off the state.

Please wait...
