“I felt joy sitting in a room full of black people watching a film,”

I feel the same thing in a room full of self-righteous, guilty, white Seattle liberals.

Colored People for the win! Oooops, I meant to write "People of Color"!

Wait, wait...You haven't seen ANY other performances this year that compete with Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, AND Macy Gray??

Are you telling me ALL FIVE of those performances beats what Annette Bening did in The Kids Are All Right? Or Julianne Moore? Or Kristin Scott Thomas in the totally awesome Nowhere Boy?

Actually, you say "especially from," which implies there are other performances in the film besides just these five which are also better than anything else you've seen.

Either the hyperbole here is a little out of hand, or you don't see many movies.

OK, I am officially an elder. I saw the play WAY BACK WHEN in NYC and it was a jaw-dropping, eye-opening, life-changing work of art. (And yes, I know that was its SECOND incarnation) I watched the trailer in yesterday's post, Jen, and thought Perry was being incredibly literal with, well, poetry. Those poems were never meant to be acted out..... Anyway, thanks for the review. I am afraid this is going to be the 21st century equivalent of Pal Joey: a play with an amazing success in live theatre, followed by a film that utterly fails to capture what engaged the live audiences, leaving future generations wondering what all the fuss was about.

(I should mention I have liked other film adaptations of plays---loved Sweeney Todd both on stage and screen)

I am tired of these movies that attack black men. It all seems to have started with the Color Purple, where the only good man in the movie was the mailman. Every year there seems to be one more added to the pile, loaded with "evil black men" doing hideous things to the innocent black women angels. Black women are being brain washed by Hollywood "That black men are evil", and the sad thing about it is that it is working. Black women are swallowing this bull@#&t without a second thought, and there is no one out there to defend us, only theaters full of sisters in tears talking to each other, reinforcing one sided stereo types, looking for excuses for their failed relationships and lost loves. It's all a cop-out and an easy escape from introspection. Black men are no better or worse than any other group of human beings-Sisters, including yourselves!

i feel you, good black man. anyone else cringe while watching 'waiting to exhale?'

haven't seen this one yet, though. my black queer friend said that perry erased all the queerness from the original, which is a bummer. still wanna see the movie though.

I SAW THE MOVIE FOR COLORED GIRLS... AND WAS HIGHLY OFFENDED, I AM A STRONG BLACK WOMAN WHO IS MARRIED TO A STRONG BLACK MAN. TYLER PERRY YOU SHOULD KNOW YOU CANNOT TAKE A POEM THAT WAS WRITTEN FROM THE HEART OF A POET AND TURN IT INTO A MOVIE, YOU CANT GET INTO THE POETS MIND, FIRST TYLER YOUU NEED TO GET YOUR ISSUES TAKEN CARE OF. YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH BLACK MEN AND WOMEN BUT ONLY YOU AND GOD CAN WORK THAT OUT.. THIS MOVIE PORTRAYED BLACK WOMEN AS DEPENDENT PEOPLE WHO CANT GET THROUGH LIFE WITHOUT A BAD MAN TO ENCOURAGE AT THE EXPENSE OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN. YOU HAVE MADE THE EYES OF THE WHITE MAN OR WOMEN SEE US AS THEY HAVE FOR CENTURIES! AND THE REAL DEAL IS OUR STRONG BLACK MEN SHOOULD BE CELEBRATED AS SHOULD OUR WOMEN. PRECOIUS WAS A BETTER MOVIE EVEN THOUGH SHE WENT THROUGH TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS SHE DID NOT ALLOW HER PAST TO DICTATE HER FUTURE. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME!

I think Tyler Perry did a wonderfull job and I honestly think you all missed the point... not everyone is as strong as the next and this movie gives you a sneek peak with the rose colored lenses off. And no, this wasnt a crack at black men, and you might want to get that insecurity evaluated, nor do i think that Perry has a problem with black people considering he is black himself. Fully writen it's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, clearly you've never been to the breaking point of your existance where living was almost to much. Say what you want but until you've walked down that path, quite frankly, you cant say shit.

Please wait...
