It doesn't look to me like either side in this debate is looking beyond facts. It's as silly for liberals to argue that NWSLP's statements are wrong as it is for conservatives to think that reality stops at facts. Yes, blacks do commit proportionately more crime. Assuming that they're genetically impelled to do so is as wrong as saying that they're solely the victims of a justice system gone out of control with racism.

People need to start addressing reality with a bit more respect, on both sides. Liberal whining and condescending, knee-jerk mothering of minority populations is in many ways just as racist as actual conservative racism because liberals are treating those minority communities like children incapable of helping themselves. But liberals sit around and pat themselves on the back for "helping" because they vote for things like welfare and food stamps, but they live in communities which are just as segregated if not more so than conservatives. And they never stop to think: "have welfare and food stamps helped?"

There certainly is systemic bias in the justice system and the economy overall, but any changes which would actually affect white liberals' lifestyles are always rejected.

Is NWLSP a racist? Who cares? Liberals, save your "racist" card for when someone says something that's actually racist. All it does is make the discussion harder.

What some HAVE been saying is that his facts are a tiny piece of the big picture, so to extrapolate them into some grand statement about a specific race being predisposed to specific acts is both WRONG and the very definition of RACIST.

@114 I sympathize. Being required to think through an issue and not fall back on ideological positions is hard. Just look at the call to ban NWLSP--typical ideological reaction. The closer you get to the edges of the ideological spectrum, where people's intellectual allegiance is to an idea more than to facts, and where people are less willing to compromise, the more you get the fingers-in-the-ears reaction that "planned barrenhood" evinces. Daily KOS and Free Republic show an interesting parity in terms of banning people for mentioning things they don't like. And of course, the media feeds this kind of thing because it inflames passions and drives advertising revenue.

The Morning Blotter: Gang Members May Have Tried to Rob Student

A student walking home from school in South Seattle last week was beaten in what appears to be a botched robbery, and a police report indicates officers suspect a gang connection in the case.

According to a police report, the student was attacked in an area "known for gang activity" around 3:15pm on November 4th near 27th Ave S and S Winthrop, just a few blocks west of Franklin High School.

The boy sustained bruises on his head and cut lip, and told police he may have hit his head on the ground and blacked out during the attack.

According to the report, although police weren't ale to positively identify any suspect, "several [gang] members were seen in the area (approximately 1 block) earlier before the incident."

*In the Delridge Triangle, several female employees of various businesses had disturbing encounters with a man, starting on October 30th when he walked into a coffee shop and began talking about his perpetual state of arousal. He became aggressive but left when asked. Two days later, on Monday the 1st, he returned to the area around 11 a.m. and told a barista she was beautiful. What she didn’t know was that after leaving her business, he was seen standing behind a dumpster, watching her and pleasuring himself. Around 11:30 a.m. he kicked it up a notch, returning to the first business to not only pleasure himself — this time in front of the clerk — but to brandish a black handgun and demand money. The hysterical clerk ran screaming from the coffee shop. Witnesses saw the suspect running northbound toward the Salvation Army. He was described as a tall, clean-shaven black man in his twenties. During the robbery he wore a red sweatshirt with a white design on the black and blue jeans. He also carried a red and white umbrella. A possible suspect was removed from a Metro bus and fled from officers, but turned out to not be the correct man. He was, however, a convicted felon carrying both drugs and a gun, and therefore received a trip downtown to King County Jail.

I'm pretty sure no one is calling to ban NWLSP for "mentioning things they don't like." They are calling to ban him for cutting and pasting those things ten different times into the same discussion topic, and for cutting and pasting boilerplate news articles; that is, for spamming this comment thread.

NWSLP isn't thinking through the issues and making an unpopular ideological argument; he's standing outside SLOG's window with a bullhorn chanting the same thing over and over again.

You're making broad sweeping and false statements about what liberals and conservatives think and do. It doesn't make any sense to do that in the same post where you talk about respecting facts. You seem to be coming from a place where you assume ignorance in other people.

I don't have a lot of time right now, so I'm just going to touch on a couple things you said. Of course food stamps and welfare work. Of course millions of Liberals have thought about it.

We aren't born blank. I can't believe I actually have to write this, but history affects the present. The best way to get rich in this country is to be born to rich parents. The most reliable way to be poor is to be born to poor parents. We shouldn't take credit for to whom we were born. I also can't believe I have to write this, but wealth begets wealth. If you're born with less, you have less to work with. If all of your money is tied up in surviving, how do you invest in a stock portfolio? If you don't have access to education, how do you get a high-paying job?

Food stamps and welfare barely, just barely help people offset the disadvantages of being born in a society that outsources to slavers overseas, and concentrates wealth upward mercilessly, and would rather spend money invading foreign countries for no good reason than educating our children.

Finally false equivalence is stupid. Oppressing minorities and the poor like Republicans do is not the same as helping the poor and minorities get basic human rights and services like Liberals do. Even if the liberal is racist, their still doing better work than the non-racist Republican who may not care about race, just wants to concentrate wealth in the hands of the plutocracy.

I'd say you've got your causality reversed. The tough gun laws are the result of high crime rates, not vice versa. If you actually check the statistics, our homicide rate has fallen steadily (nearly monotonically) over the last 20 years.

I live in a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago that is ~96% black. I'm perfectly aware of reality. And the only point that I made is that it is wrong to conclude that liberal cities are white cities. Look at Chicago; it's 31.5% non-Hispanic Caucasian, 34.6% African-American, and 17.8% Asian, according to the 2006-08 American Community Survey. Not an incredibly white city, if you ask me!
And yet Chicago goes blue year after year. We haven't had a Republican mayor since 1927!
