Your second image doesn't work (it's a jpeg, not .jpg, which is Mac-style, not internet-style). Too bad, because I want to see it bad.

Not just London and Paris, and not just the 19th century; a Congolese pygmy named Ota Benga was exhibited in both the American Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Zoo in 1906, and for many years after that traveling exhibits of Africans in cages were going around to various fairs and circuses in the US. Somewhere in my papers I have a copy of a newspaper article about one traveling company visiting Miles City, MT in about 1920 or thereabouts. The Africans lived in their cages.
